Pulled over for a rest on highway 60 near Palm Springs, 1948

(an abandoned portion of U.S. 60 at Whitewater, CA)

As a child we took that road several times a year on our way to or from my grandparent's house in Riverside. One thing your photo is missing that I clearly recall: Bumper to bumper traffic. And also that my parents would never let us stop at the dinosaurs in Cabazon. :(

I don't know how old you are Tod, but this portion of old U.S. 60 was bypassed in 1952 by a new expressway, which is now I-10. So it hasn't been in use as a U.S. highway since then. Actually, it wasn't just U.S. 60, but also U.S. 99 and 70. I'd like to take this shot again, but with some more cars and a little Photoshop magic. :o

BTW...the dinosaurs are still there in Cabazon, but now have buildings in front of them, so they are hard to see now.

That's pretty cool, Pete. Hard to tell if it's real or not. The only thing I notice is the lettering "Aug 50" isn't the typical font the used on those kind of photos. This looks more like it was typed on.

The frame around the pic was found on the net, and was a scan of someone's old photo. It had the same font for the date stamp, I just changed the date.

Very cool Pete. You're grandparents took this photo with a Brownie right?

Uh huh... yep, that's right, a Brownie, yeah, that's it... :D

1948... or 2008?

NEAT...reminds me of a photo of my dad...except for the modern glasses...hehehe. Someday my kid will get the pleasure of wearing vintage. But my wife has to have one first...

Hope to see yas at Fanham's, we can't wait!

...and convert back to vintage hotel from its current status as a house of ill repute.

David...that would a cool place to make into a pharmacy with an old-style lunch counter. As far as the photo, we need Rob and some of his friends walking in the background in their attire.
