  1. I'm 74. My first "driveable" car was a '48 Plym. convertible. Scored that baby for $25 when I was 15. Motor was apart & most of it was in the trunk. My Dad helped me get it running in the street in front of our house. Mom was not a big fan of that project (or the many that followed for that matter).
  2. You have probably already thought of this but....don't forget the wiring for the head lights, parking lights & horn.
  3. Talk to your machine shop/rebuilder & ask them what they want removed. Probably a good idea to deliver it with the flywheel, clutch, balancer (which will come off when you remove the small bolts on your front pulley) so it can be balanced properly. Obviously you have the head off already . Good luck with your project.
  4. Am thinking this car had a mercury switch or something similar from the factory as part of the light housing hence the always hot wire from the front of the car. Maybe try this: remove switch, attach wire jumper from light to ground, hold light in different positions & see if it turns on & off. Some cars had a button switch in one corner of the trunk also.
  5. Also, at one time you could get a wrench, I called them a dogbone. About 10" long with several different size square nubs on each end. Maybe another forum member remembers the tech. name. Might still be available somewhere.
  6. These pics are of my p-15's linkage but probably similar enough to yours to help. Hope so. they are taken with the vent open. Olds fiesta hubcaps on your ride? Nice!
  7. Bolts through the cowl. Access them from inside the car about dashboard level. That mirror replaces the short little piece of side trim.
  8. As to your other question, a good source of parts is Roberts Motor Parts phone: 978 363 5407. I've had great luck dealing with them. You would also be surprised at how much stuff is available at your local Auto Zone, NAPA, Advance Auto stores, etc.
  9. Sometimes taking it off & squirting a little oil in the vacuum port & oiling all the moving parts will get 'em going again. Just did mine & it helped somewhat. The vacuum booster can Frank suggested is also a good plan. Good luck.
  10. May I suggest that you first check for ignition/fuel delivery problems before you pull the head. Compression check would be an excellent idea before head removal too. That's a lot of work if it's something you may not have to do. Please don't be offended but it kinda sounds like your mechanic was trying to blow you off. Nice looking car you have. Good luck with it.
  11. Thanks guys, Gregg, mine's a replaceable cartridge unit, thank goodness. Merle, those are the #'s I needed. Thanks so much for both of your replies.
  12. Need to change the oil filter cartridge on my 230 engine. Top of canister reads: Deluxe Prod. Corp. La Port, Ind. Cartridge JC Gasket G101. Is there a FRAM, WIX, or any other modern interchange? Thanks in advance for any help.
  13. Those are beautiful cars. Thanks for sharing. I once owned a 62 300, factory stick on the floor. Pretty unusual. Paid $1,000 for it at a Chrysler dealer used car lot. Guess how old that makes me! Appomatox, Va. gorgeous scenery. Hooray stars & bars!
  14. I've heard that there's going to be a huge earthquake soon & California is going to slide into the Pacific ocean. Problem solved! Hoping all the California members of the forum are well away from there with their cars at that time.
  15. Glad you're healing quickly. Best wishes.
  16. Around here, mid Atlantic & southern USA there are LOTS of cruise ins at burger joints, shopping centers, etc. for free. Car shows that charge you to enter your car are usually charity supporters. Whenever you take your car out & park somewhere it usually turns into a one car car show though.
  17. Nice! Mine's a 230, Fenton headers, HEI distributor from Tom Langdon, alum. head from Edgie, & since last weekend a rod knockin'. Bummer!
  18. That new engine----2 carbs? alternator? I think you're on to something there. Keep us posted.
  19. OK, someone correct me if I'm wrong but look closely at the balancer. small circle of bolts around the crank bolt. Remove these to remove balancer? Don't need a puller for this operation. My deepest apologies if I'm wrong & if so I'll accept a verbal whippin'.
  20. Thanks for the replies, guys. As I feared, my car has the wrong wiper motor. It has a small tab with a tiny hole in the end, not the horseshoe or any way to attach it. I'll start shopping for the correct motor. Thanks again!
  21. Anyone have a picture of what connects the switch on top of the dash with the wiper motor on a 48 Plym? (See my attached photo). I'm not even sure I got the correct wiper motor with the car when I bought it. Presently am using a jury-rigged pull switch attached to a tiny tab protruding from top of the motor. Doesn't work very well, though (understatement).
  22. You may want to give this guy a call. "The Old Carb Doctor". 828 659 1428 or 800 945 2272 He does carb restoration. Did an old Zenith for me & did an excellent job. He's close to you also (N.C.)
  23. Check the classifieds, this site, the post "needed for 46-48 Plym." Don't know if 48 & 49 trim is the same width but my response to his post may help you out.
  24. Man, that is clean! I'm ashamed to open my hood now.
  25. By George, I think you've got something there. Keep us posted on how it works.
