  1. I got Charlies kit and I'm very happy. Probably $450-$500 total I do have a slight issue with the spacing, maybe I got a truck spacer, too. It seems to be o.k., though. The kit made a huge difference in braking. Fantastic! I did add a dual master from ECI. That was a little pricy, but I wanted the bracket. If you have a make to make a brcket I have another dual master,if you like.
  2. That's what I'm running now, too. I've done 250-350 miles at a time, stopping for fuel and a short rest but the car handled it no problem. Fred.you ought to come down for Back to the Fifties, great time. I plan on being there at least for Sat.- Sun.
  3. I agree with Ben. The semi I drive at work is governed at 62 mph. Many trucking companies have cut trucks back to try and save fuel (with certain motors and rears, they lose mileage, but thats another story.) I have run my '48 at 60-65 mph without OD for hours without a problem. These old birds are tough.
  4. Not only the clock but the whole center piece is a good score. Man, I'd like to find something like that or even just the clock someday. Lately the swaps around here haven't been the best. Or, I don't have as much houndog in me as you do, Tim:D. Congrats on the find.
  5. Spoken like a true future President:D:D
  6. Glad to hear that. I drive for them on what we call linehaul. I pull double trailers at night, go to a terminal and move freight around for a few hours. Hook'em back up and go home. I'm home every day. Been with them since '86 except for a 4 yr. stint with my own business. We damage things at times too, but, the majority of drivers take pride in thier work. I know I do. Wayne P.
  7. That's where I found a couple when I first got the car and was cleaning the sludge out.
  8. You could use a starter switch. Used to sell them. a push button switch with 2 10 gauge wires with aligator clips. Hook one to power on the batt and one to the starter solenoid.Push and go.
  9. I'm sure I've asked some questions that have been answered before. I have a moderate level of general knowledge and ability, i.e. "enough to make me dangerous". This is my first (and second) old Mopar so I had alot to learn. Everyone here that I asked questions of were very helpful. Don, Pete, Norm and Young Ed have all helped me along with many others. As I have learned a few things, I try to share in the same way others have. I have alot to learn and I'm sure Pete's email will see a couple more questions from me about his Carter- Weber setup as that is my next project. For me, I only trust my self so far, so I ask questions to "make sure"I'm looking at things the right way. I think things got abit out of hand with the troll and some who had answered his questions many times couldn't understand why he wouldn't take the advice. Some come looking for an answer. Others come looking for an answer that they think they already know and when the answer they receive is different, they re-ask waiting to hear what they want to hear. Kinda like putting your hand on a hot stove not thinking you'll get burned because you "know" you won't get burned. All this might not make much sense but I hope things will settle down and that Don and Normspeed come back. I have appreciated all the help. my .02
  10. When I rebuilt mine the crank and rods were o.k.. I went to oversize pistons, trimmed the head and a mild cam. The machine shop charged an arm and a leg, though, My fault, didn't communicate enough with them. If I would of had access to a 230 crank and rods reasonable at the time I would have jumped on it. But, the car runs good now.
  11. I don't believe we've been above 0 for three days. Tomorrow will get to 10 above zero:). I have to get me some good heat in the garage, I have work I want to do but Like mentioned before, it's not fun working on cold metal. Oh well, only 2 or 3 more months of this:mad:. Wayne P.
  12. Very sorry to hear that. I've been on his other site getting info and always enjoyed the "jousting" between him, Don C. and Tim. Condolences to the family. RIP.
  13. in my garage. We have 2 ft. of snow on the ground and it's -8 this morning. Could be worse. I do have a small wall heater that uses L.P. gas. Not bad but it's kind of a wet heat. I will be doing a re-wire job on the '48 soon. I decided to get a harness kit from Rebel wire. I wanted a fuse panel and some sort of organized beginning point so I think it will be worth the extra money. I can do just enough to get me in trouble sometimes:rolleyes:. Like they say, you've got to know your limitations.
  14. Congrats, I wish you and Young Ed the best of luck. Lets hope its not like one of the classic lines from the Stooges, "So tell me, are you happy or are you married"?
  15. I've used muratic acid and Greg is right. It's hard on the nose. But, it does take rust off well. Rinse it down good with water and give it a shot of paint and you're good to go. I used it on a number of brackets and other things when I pulled the motor last year.
  16. Might be working part of the night. After that, I'll just go home and watch the 3 Stooges on AMC.
  17. We had our usual big breakfast with all the kids and grandkids. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon and fried potatoes. For supper my wife made her great lasagna. You wouldn't think a 100% Swede could make decent Italian but she got a recipe for sauce from her Uncle who was Italian. It's one of the few meals I eat until I hurt. But, it's a good hurt:rolleyes:
  18. Welcome. I'm Pretty sure I have a tailight lens I don't need. Just PM an offer and it will be coming your way. Wayne P.
  19. If you could use an extra set of hands from southern Minnesota ( where I'm at for those who never heard of Owatonna), I'd be happy to help also. Wayne P.
  20. A shop that did my motor used three ring pistons on my friends '37. He was not happy about that at all. He's keeping a close eye on it. With mine, they didn't pull the back frost plugs or that allenbolt in the back when they "cleaned out" the block. They also used a non-Mopar rod for the one that was bent too bad to straighten. Within 500 mikes the motor was back out with spun bearings and the same rod bent. They tried to charge me with re-doing the motor but after a couple of lively discussions they took care of it. When I picked the motor up there were new plugs in the back and sealant on the bolt. They said they used four ring pistons in mine. This shop was suggested to my friend and we thought we would try it. Never saw any of thier work but heard they were good. Needless to say, that place has lost my business.
  21. I'm with Don. With the room in that back seat you can see why there was a population explosion in the fifties;).
  22. Happy Thanksgiving and I hope everyone has safe travels. If it doesn't snow too much I'll probably take the '48 to Red Wing to my Sister's place. It'll be about a 150mile round trip.Nice little jaunt.
  23. Thanks for all the advice. I am going to try a better ground tomorrow. Ed, I'll let you know before the meeting if I need a gauge. Thanks again.
  24. I know this may be getting old, but, it's keeping me up at night (morning). I've had trouble getting an accurate reading from my gauge. I bought a new sender, ran new wires and nothing seemed to work. This morning after work I went to the local Old Plymouth guy to see what we could figure out. We found that both wires going to the sender had power. That does not seem right. Being a thermostatic (two wire) sender and gauge, could the blades in the gauge be shorting out, causing both wires to have power? Should I try a new gauge? Any help will be avidly read and appreciated. I have to try to go to bed now and forget about this for awhile. Las thing I need is a nightmare of a huge fuel sender chasing me down the street:eek: Thanks, Wayne P.
