  1. I wonder what would happen if you were to disconnect the lead from the generator while it was running? Jeff
  2. For some reason I always think of "the Red Badge of Courage".......when I think back about it.
  3. Tim; Going through this is a profound (and often profane) experience. So much so that I wonder if you can even say that you own one of these engines unless you have done battle with the much dreaded WDT. Seems like it ought to be a rite of passage. Jeff
  4. Dave; Believe me when I say I understand what you are up against. If it makes you feel any better I started with a derelict truck that had sat for around 30 years. It was a pretty big job to say the least ....took me about 3 1/2 years. Doing a Dodge even here where they were built is a bit more complicated than building a Chevy or a Ford. Can't just pick up a catalog and order everything you need. It is OK though as you will find out because you can find what you need. You just need to look a bit harder and get creative some times. Being active in this Egroup is by far the smartest thing you can do. I look forward to following your progress. Jeff
  5. Cheers Dave; I had a similar type parts situation to yours several years ago when I decided to build an AJS motorcycle over here. I started off with an engine that came out of an attic in Iowa......and built the entire bike around it. It is a bitsa but still very cool. Would have been almost impossible without a good internet group. Enjoy your project......it will be great when it is done! Jeff
  6. Well done and congrats! There ought to be a merit badge for those of us who have gotten past this little treat. Jeff
  7. A glance now and then should be enough.........eyes belong on the road.
  8. Wire size for an actual 6 volt harness will work just fine if you switch to 12 volt. If you try to use a universal type 12 volt harness in a 6 volt system you will likely have some under sized wire problems that will create reliability issues. Quality Power makes a 6 volt alternator based on the single wire GM unit. I have this set up and like it a lot.
  9. I posted photos of this truck a while back. ID and authenticity questions aside I think that since they are using this truck they ought to consider changing the show name to Yesterday.
  10. Plug gap should be .035".
  11. Sounds like you may have found the main problem. Be sure and have the distributor model # handy when you go to buy replacements. Jeff
  12. Sounds like the wiper switch (at least) is getting power getting power from a hot terminal on the Ignition switch. A lot if not all ignition switches have or can have a terminal that is hot all the time if the battery is hooked up. I have also seen stuff like this happen when an ignition switch has started to go bad. Jeff
  13. In an earlier post you mentioned that the heater rheostat was getting very hot. I meant to comment on this at the time but got sidetracked. This could cause some potentially serious problems. Seems like all the small ones that are commonly available share this condition. It took me a while to find a NOS one on Ebay that was larger and better made that does not get real hot. I believe the one I found was for a Buick of the same time period.......at any rate it does not get too hot when in use. Just something to consider. Don't want to see Dolly get cooked. Jeff
  14. Heck.....lot's of Southern California is looking like that.
  15. How about replacing the condenser ? Agreed the Langdon stuff is real nice. Not sure if most of us need any of it though. You are only going to get so much umph out of these engines without spending a bleeding fortune. I am perfectly happy with my Pertronix set up. Gave me exactly what I wanted for a reasonable amount of money......and has not been touched since. Jeff
  16. Kinda sounds like the points to me. Did you try filing and resetting them? I had issues with metal transfer when I still had points. Quality was questionable. I switched over to a Pertronix system and have not had any problems since doing so. Jeff
  17. The repops do have those details.
  18. I kind of doubt it is ignition related since both systems have been tried. I think I would be looking for fuel starvation......especially since you say it sputters some before dying. Jeff
  19. The correct style housing and lens (as shown in the diagram) are available as repops from Roberts and others. It is true that they are not particularly bright and mount low. You can augment this easy enough with additional lighting as you see fit. I even added a 6 volt brake light at the bottom of my rear window in a nod for increased safety. Jeff
  20. Here is what Burgundy looks like on one of these trucks with trim rings and stock hub caps. Please note that this truck is not painted in one of the stock colors either. I started off with an off white rim and then tested cream but immediately settled on this color. IMO it works well and looks infinitely better than chrome or mag style wheels on an old work truck like this that is clearly not a Hot Rod. Jeff
  21. Paul Can't you just use your tailgate? Seems to me your truck has already been seasoned like a cast iron frying pan......
  22. I would want to make sure I had a good seal at the connection point. I wonder if there is a way you could adapt the clamp on fittings from a couple of old factory type filters? If you could it would be much nicer than set screws. Jeff
  23. I have one from Quality Power and even got a bracket from them. It's the Bee's Knee's. I don't ever have to even give it a thought. Jeff
  24. I was able to totally eliminate this condition with nothing more than a home made heat shield that is held in place with bailing wire. The shield sits on top the manifold and is about 4" wide and maybe 7" long. Very simple......and does a more than adequate job deflecting heat away from the float chamber. Since I added this I have not had any hot starting problems......and it gets plenty hot here. Side note: I had already eliminated the mechanical pump and have a good electric pump and regulator. I still had hot starting issues until I added the shield I have mentioned. Jeff
  25. Paul maybe they have a category for Charbroiled ? ( I would have said well done.....but I don't want to encourage another effort like this)
