  1. Trucks original owner (my grandfather) always had at least one mahogany fishing boat. My father in law had a 1946 double planked cypress over live oak 30' cabin cruiser that Hurricane Katrina turned into kindling. I have the gauge panel, bow lights and bell from the 46 here at the farm. We also try to turn out a wooden boat every couple years here. Mostly little car topper skiffs, canoes or day sailers. Have close to 200 linear feet of 1" wide 10-12 foot long mahogany veneer strips to cover the headliner base with. Also have enough other mahogany to do a wood strip headliner in my Sweptline, door pulls for both trucks, dash trim for both trucks.
  2. Only cam we've ever flattened was a 22RE Toyota running Mobil1 full synthetic. Lisa drove it from Rosemark TN to Spanaway WA when we moved west in 2001. She drove her 95 Outback from Buckley WA to Rosemark TN when we moved back in 2011, w/o having to add any oil. I drove my 69 D100 pulling a horse trailer, had to add oil a couple times. My daily driver Ranger gets new oil when the stuff in it is too dark to see through. The old oil is used to top off my 69 318 powered truck. Lisa's car gets the oil changed by mileage, old oil used in the 69. The motorcycles get changed when the clutches start to either grab or slip. Old oil saved for the 69. Everything on our place gets whatever is on sale or Rotella. The 49 had Pennzoil in it its entire working life. There is so much paraffin in the block that I'd have to put the engine in the burn pile to get it cleaned out. The 230 donor engine was run with "cheap crap" and there isn't a bit of sludge in the valve area, looks factory fresh.
  3. Q4: threaded for a giant philips head screw in my 49. 2 mounting blocks. Is the QR headliner panel rough enough to cement my mahogany strips to? Butcher paper thin wood 1" wide for the headliner. Helps tie the truck in with the family wooden boat history.
  4. My 49 was reissued a title in WA when the engine was changed in 58 or 63. So it's titled to a 1948 P15 car engine. I do have my A pillar tag, so when I get it titled here in TN I'll have it under its actual serial number. Easy to do here, I've already got the form. Have to do the same thing on one of my motorcycles, as 1963 bikes weren't titled, especially ones that had track modifications.
  5. The one in my 218 is brass, hope the 230 is as well. Not in the mood to fight wih those. What a mess, surprised you were able to fish it all out as quickly as you did.
  6. You'd need a trans access cover plate from a 4 speed truck or have to hole your stock floor for the shifter.
  7. Depends. All he can do do for a trans swap is measure and see. The case bolts to the bellhousing should be pretty close if not exactly the same spacing. And a 50should be the exact same unit as the 57. If I was going through the headache of old column shift for old column shift, I'd swap in a 4 speed, stronger trans, better clutch, gets rid of the column shift in favor of a fewer external moving parts top loader... Clean floorboard a la column shift manual or auto, push button or dash shift auto is really nice. No external linkages to bind, bend or get torn off to me is worth sacrificing a smooth floor. And when the synchros, if so equipped, fail in a top loader, it is a lot easier to learn the feel of double clutching or clutchless gear changes. Too many years driving tractor trailers, I can double clutch just fine or shift just fine if the trans doesn't have synchros. With synchros drives me bug house, you have to use the clutch.
  8. Unless you plan (as I do) for a bunch of late model donor stuff in your truck (ac, stereo, cb, power windows, etc) the 6v stuff is fine. Only reason I'm going that route is I have a complete wrecked Ranger (bent frame) to rob parts off of. Including transmission and rear axle. People were always stopping here and wanting to buy my 49. They've stopped since I put a sign in the yard that says "Pickers and scrappers will be shot". They'd already taken my father in law for 2 ski boats, 1963 F250 and 1985 F250HD, a 68 Beetle and a 46 CJ2A. Plus countless other items from the barn. I do have people while I'm out and about inquiring about buying my 69 Dodge, $10 a pound usually gets the message across pretty well (the 400 pound cattle rack helps too). Bed wood... if you are going to use it as a truck, just buy a few 10' Doug fir 1x10s or 1x8s and cut them down to fit. Generic galvanized or stainless carriage bolts and eye bolts for the main hold downs. Bed floor in 1948 was oak painted flat black, seems a waste of money to buy hardwood and then paint it... Locally sourced wood, Thompson's Water Seal, and have fun with it. Look in the kick panel "pockets", I found a switch blade and an early Playboy Party Jokes book in mine. And a really nice antler "pipe bowl" under the seat. Guess my stoner uncle turned button down business man who's since forgotten his roots wasn't always a waste of space... If your starter works as is, leave it alone. 12v will slightly accelerate wear on the copper in the plunger contact switch, but you can get new switch guts cheap at Tractor Supply or NAPA if the counterman isn't lazy... Nice looking truck per your avatar. You and your son should really enoy the refresh and use process.
  9. Measure it, but be ready to change the output yoke. Your truck should have normal u-joints, my 49 and earlier tend to have ball and trunnion type that are hard to get you hands on in a hurry. And were available in at least 2 sizes, even with measurements, the parts house invariably sends the wrong one... When I upgrade to a modern axle, I'll have to upgrade the output yoke on the transmission too, or switch trans/rear at the same time from the same donor. You guys with "late models" have it a bit easier than those of us with "fossils"...
  10. Harley Davidson linkages and some left over stock pieces. Worked fine, 1940 Pontiac sedan with an L6. Same carb spacing as a 2x1 Mopar manifold.
  11. One my formerly local dealers had exactly the truck I wanted. F550 cab and a half 4x4, diesel, long bed flat/stake, vinyl and rubber interior, base radio, manual transmission... Could have taken it home that day, but, they shot themselves in the foot trying to add on a bunch of passenger car financing "gotchas". Apparently, dealerships have absolutely NO idea what a work truck is... No, I don't see why you need to add floormats, steering wheel cover, paint sealant, etc. It's going in the woods... No, I don't need to upgrade the radio, add extra lights and such to it... I drove in a few days later with a $900 1/2 ton 2wd from the 1960s that has outworked any late model 1 ton I've put it up against... and can be converted to 4wd for under $2K if needed. They were a bit "unhappy" to lose a $60K sale...
  12. Column shift I'd guess? If so, clean lube and adjust your linkages. Just one of the many reasons my late 230 transplant into my 49 is sticking with the top load early style 3 speed. I literally gave away my column shift 3 speed that came with the donor engine.

  14. Gentle use of a pry bar once you double check al the bolts are out. Should slide back. Took a 3 on the tree off a 230 a couple weeks ago, pulled trans, pulled bell, then pulled pressure plate and flywheel off. Flywheel is the hard part. Had to slightly pry on both sides of the bell, and then it slid off like it was new.

I'm originally from Graham, used to go up around Cora Lake and High Rock Look Out all the time as a kid. Blueberry picking, blackberry picking (more than once on the same bush as a black bear, that will get your attention). Deer hunting was almost always on the east end of Riffe Lake. I bet I've seen that truck before... Welcome to the forum.
  17. I've been looking at a couple a lot less solid than that. I'll get some snaps of one of them, makes your toy look like it just rolled off the assembly line... Gas lights only or gas/electric combination? Too bad you aren't closer, I've got a junk Terry trailer with natural gas conversion that could donate the stove/oven, furnaces, water heater, roof mount a/c unit... I don't need it, have a self propelled (Ungers Coach, 413/727 on a D600 or 700 chassis) so the trailer parts aren't needed. I'm going to turn the Terry chassis into a farm trailer. Not my coach in the pic, mine is two tone green, but the same model.

Only 2 older ones in my current stable. 1971 Honda CL100 with a CB100 low style exhaust pipe instead of a CL Scrambler pipe. 1963 Honda CL72, 248cc Parallel twin Scrambler with CB72 low pipes, no fenders, no side panels, CB77 (305) twin leading shoe rear dum and Suzuki T500 Titan front twin leading shoe drum in a Ceriani CB/CL 77 type front fork. Vintage track bike project. Was a race bike in the late 60s. Other bikes are a 1996 Suzuki Intruder 800 (Lisa's), 1998 Suzuki LS650 Savage (mine, heavily modified), and a 1999 Kawasaki VN1500 Drifter (Chief knock off) that should turn 81K miles old this week...

  20. Did you go to the rez and steal some poor Navajo's house? Sorry, been reading too many Hillerman novels... Looks more like a small mobile home than a camper. Is the chimney for an oil stove or a small wood/coal stove? I've been looking at a couple like that locally to turn into changing rooms or bathrooms for rec area at the pond. Or weekend get away spots for car/truck/motorcycle friends...Tell me the springs, wheels and axles are inside of it, because you'll never find correct replacements.

  22. How many of the broken pistons are just flat out OLD? Metal fatigue from so many heat cycles. Aluminum gets brittle as it ages...

  25. Mine are fiberglass backed copper. Some kind of Air Force scrap material my father in law found back in the late 70s or early 80s. Still need to add a vinyl edge binding to them. I don't like raw edges on interior parts.
