  1. Well, for one thing the crank pulley is set up for narrow belts and the waterpump pulley is set up for the wide one; sounds like you need to find a new waterpump pulley! O(r change the damper, which would be more difficult. Marty
  2. The easiest way to put an A-518 on a bigblock is to buy a conversion bellhousing. These require you to cut off the front portion of the A-518 casting and then bolt the conversion bellhousing onto the front pump mounting bolts. You also want to be sure what A-518 transmission you have; some are set up for standard convertors, other must have a lock-up convertor; the input shafts are different. Nowadays they make small computers to control the lock-up and OD functions in a car that wasn't originally set up for one. Marty
  3. The one thing I would add to this is to have your shock in hand when you make up your own bracket. The first ones we made were too short, and the shock was bottomed out at ride height. The second set was 3 inches taller, and work just fine! Marty

  5. As I recall, with the exception of the stroker crank and the turbo, you found them all and installed them! Marty
  6. Anyone looking for ways to save some bucks while MIG welding should look into changing their gas. Most people run a Argon/CO2 75%/25% mix, but most of the industrial welders (like my shipyard) have switched to CO2 100%. It took a little while for everyone to get used to it, as it requires a slightly different setup, but the cost savings are significant. Marty
  7. Not really. I work in a shipyard, and we weld everything from really thin stuff to one inch plate. The problem is that if the weld is done correctly the weld itself is pure virgin metal with no contaminants or covering, and is therefore likely to rust right now. We usually try to get a coat of paint on a weld as soon as practical.
  8. My 47 came with a visor installed; I took it off because it blocked the visibility of traffic lights too much for my liking. Marty
  9. The converted radio does not have a local/distance switch, and I have an antenna amplifier (which didn't seem to do much). It's just annoying because I never know what station it's going to pick up when I start the car, and then I have to fiddle with it a bit. Marty

I have the Turnswitch conversion in my 47; the only problem I have comes from the fact that I ignored their recommendation about minimizing antenna lead length so that I could continue to use my rear-deck mounted antenna. Sound quality is very good, but I sometimes have problems maintaining a lock on an FM station. Marty
  11. I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. It might be worth having someone with an ultrasound gauge measure all of the cylinders. When we found my 230 block was a worn-out .060" overbore, we checked the wall thickness and found the the bore was concentric with the casting and had lots of meat left. My motor is now 0.072" oversize ( I used a modern metric ringset and had pistons made to match). Marty

  14. I think you'll be fine. My 230 was in the same condition and had been in a car that was a couple of thousand feet above the snow line for about 30 years, and was in great shape when we tore it down. Marty
  15. I had exactly the same experience with my 7 x 15 wheels. When I finally installed my front disk brakes and needed a different offset wheel, I took the 6 x 15 wheels that had been on the front, put a slightly narrower and taller tire on them and installed them on the back. Haven't heard anything rubbing since. Marty
  16. Not to mention that if it has been open for years, anything in the cooling system probably evaporated a long time ago. I would have been more worried if everything was hooked up and sealed! Marty
  17. If you really decide to pursue this, there are some guys on the MML (Mopar Mailing List) that are pursuing an effort to get some modern four barrel manifolds cast up for the Poly's. Marty
  18. My favorite clutch story was a 289HP Mustang with an aftermarket Long-style 3 finger clutch. I was sitting at an intersection with the car in gear and the clutch fully disengaged when there was a noise and suddenly the car took off across the intersection with my clutch foot still flat on the floor. It turned out that one clutch finger fractured, allowing part of the clutch to engage enough to move the car rather rapidly. It made sense once I figured it out, but was a real surprise when it happened. Marty
  19. If the needle won't go back to zero you have a mechanical problem in the speedo that is preventing it from reaching zero. From your description, it almost sounds like the needle is loose and shifted on the pin. The magnet wouldn't have this effect. Marty
  20. I'm curious; did you have some way to make sure that the new backing plate was perfectly concentric with the axle? If you think about it, if the backing plate was even 1/8" too high (for example) then the bottom half of the shoes woudn't even touch the drum. Marty
  21. The owner of the shop that I hung out at for a few decades used to regularly challenge his sons, who were learning TIG welding from him, to weld a full bead around a soda can without warping it. It took them several years before they could beat him. Marty

  23. Only if it was bone dry when you filled the engine with oil, and you then forgot to check it after running the engine a while. Marty
  24. You can use a TIG welder to weld pretty much anything, not just aluminum and SS. When the shop I hung out at was making roll cages or tubular frames we always TIG welded everything, since it generally puts less heat in the metal than MIG welding (which we would use for building engine stands and the like).
