  1. Wow! They managed to ruin 2 old trucks!
  2. Just curious, when these oversized filters are crushed down and forced to fit, does any oil pass through them at all?
  3. That seems very reasonable for a set of patterns. Scott.
  4. Good to know it was something simple. The shroud should help as well. Scott.
  5. A question for Gramps 1951. How are you measuring the temperature? Did you adapt the original factory gauge or is this an aftermarket gauge? Gauges can be off. One of those handheld infrared thermometers may give you a good baseline of the temperature.
  6. Here is a nice thread on using the HEI module. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=92166
  7. There are a number of inexpensive ways to go electronic and it is very easy with the poly 318. An electronic ignition distributor from any 74 to 76 LA318 will drop right in your poly 318 and can reliably trigger a Chrysler Electronic ignition box or a GM HEI module. The HEi module has the advantage of not needing a ballast resistor. If you go with the HEI module a Ford TFI coil will give you a good hot spark. All parts available at your local pick and pull. Scott.
  8. Drop the oil pan and pull the valve cover to clean out as much sludge as possible, then run a good detergent oil and drive it.
  9. I travel I-385 and I-26 regularly in SC and the average speed of traffic seems to be 75 to 85. I typically do about 80 in a modern car and there are plenty others that pass me. I suspect anything less than 70 could be a little risky. Scott.
  10. The original hand brake would have been at the end of the transmission. Looks like a previous owner swapped the rear axle. Good luck, Scott.
  11. Sounds like a good solution. Give it a try and let us know how well it works.
  12. Just a guess, but maybe it stands for Service Replacement?
  13. Polysphere chamber or semi-hemi.
  14. There is a very active poly group over on yahoo groups. You may want to check it out. The 318 poly has a reputation for durability. Any that I have seen with the heads off had very little ridge after well over 100k miles. The combustion chamber is a good design, but the ports are a little small. They respond well to the usual hopup items, but consider the small ports and don't get too crazy. The poly can be found lots of dodge and plymouth sedans and wagons up till 66 and I think 67 in trucks. 1962 and newer will allow for more modern transmission choices.
  15. Don't junk that poly intake manifold or carb. Clean it up good, a little paint and throw it on ebay. It might help finance the rest of your build.
  16. Here is an interesting article about the A833 and ratios. Mostly performance oriented, but still some good info. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/a-833-the-ultimate-mopar-4-speed-fix-get-overdrive-and-strength/
  17. You may need to look at more than the first one..
  18. You could use one of these and then you would have a great vacuum source for you wipers as well as 12 volts. Requires an oil line to the pump so some fabrication may be required. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/isuzu-npr-alternator
  19. I've always wondered if one of those electric vacuum pumps from a ford diesel would power the vacuum wipers and avoid slow wipers while going uphill. Might be easier than converting the wipers to electric on some models. Of course this would require a 12v conversion. Has anyone ever done this? Scott.
  20. Probably a good idea for any power steering conversion.
  21. Pictures Please!
  22. I've always thought electric assist was interesting, Lots of these are used in GM SUVs. You'll need to modify your steering column to adapt the assist motor, but the suspension stays the same. There is a 3rd party standalone module available to make the GM electric assist work without a computer. If the assist motor or module fails it defaults back to the manual steering you've always know. Search ebay for Saturn Vue electric power steering Search Google for DIY electric power steering conversion. Good luck. Scott.
  23. Nice write-up. Thanks for posting this.
  24. http://www.sweptline.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=15468&start=20 http://www.studebaker-info.org/tech/Frames/buddy/aerosusp.html http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/832461-aerostar-ifs-progress-pics.html http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1164255-1954-f-100-d.html
  25. Aerostar is another candidate but rotating the rack to a better angle can be problematic. Good track width and good frame width as well. Couple of people using them on the ford truck sites
