No fluid leak. Just some residual water from cleaning it up. No chatter during engagement. I understand it’s standard procedure to resurface the flywheel with a standard clutch set-up during a rebuild. I just don’t know how critical it is for a fluid drive set-up

Any opinions on whether I should resurface the fluid drive clutch plate? I’m wondering if it’s worth the trouble it would be to pull it and the possibility of damage. The ring gear looks pretty good

Thank you for all the incouragment. I’ve got time to weigh my options. I have several weeks of cleaning parts before I need to make a decision.

Thanks. I mailed my cam to Egge an hour ago. So someone else will have to profit from your advice.

Ordered parts today from Egg: cam bearings piston set with pins valve springs piston ring set valve lifters connecring rod bearings pin bushings main bearings cam sprocket crank sprocket timing chain exhaust valves intake valves guides cam will be sent to Egge for grinding crank will be ground locally I haven’t decided what I’m going to do about reassembly. This is my first engine build and I’m not very confident in my ability to do it correctly and to make sure a procedure is not missed. I thought about asking the machine shop if I can do the assembly with them so I can learn. Then there is also the $ issue. It’s adding up pretty fast.

Thanks. No experience at all. I just read as many forums posts as I can and take lots of notes.

Went by the machine shop to check on progress ( they’ve had the block and parts for over two weeks now). They said they had to hot tank the block and spray it out several times to get all the crap out ( no surprise). When in brought the block in, I expressed my concern that I thought it might be cracked. They magnaflux the block and head twice and found no cracks. So, that’s good news. They cylinders will be bored .030 main and rods .010 head shaved .030 block shaved 0.010

I had some trouble pulling the crank pulley. It took me me several days of heat and PB blaster before I finally got that sucker off.

Water distribution tube came out smoothly. Looks decent but will replace with new. Block was seriously gunked up

I’ve started the process of rebuilding the engine in my 1947 Dodge. I would like to use this thread to ask questions along the way when I can’t find the answer using the the search function. The reason for rebuilding this engine is that it had low compression and also the possibility of a cracked block or head. When I bought the car.a year ago the PO mentioned it might have a cracked block (probably why he sold it so cheap). I brought it home pulled the head gasket and found the cylinders full of coolant. Thought maybe just a bad gasket.Cleaned out the coolant. Drained the pan. Replaced gasket. Drove it for a couple of months. Still had low compression. Would still blow gray smoke sometimes on accelerating. I have dreams of making this car into a reliable, long distance driving car. To rebuild the engine seems to be an inevitability. What the hell. I’m doin it!

So I pulled the engine over Christmas holiday. Not so easy by myself and on a hill

That’s a sweet ride. Like the color.

Driving the D24 today felt like a boat, gliding over every bump and the big hood in front felt like the prow of a ship. Very cool!

The guys who put the interior in for the PO glued the carpet to the rusty floor. I spent last week pulling the interior and carpet, grinding the floor down to bare metal and treating it. There are a few rust pin holes in the floor that I will have to tackle at a later date as well as making new drip sills which are shot. The front seat was a bear to get back in. Many curse words were necessary to get it bolted in

Took a short ride along the coast today

This car will be a driver. I'm not into cosmetics. I want to eventually do an engine rebuild and a disc brake conversion. I would like to push my luck some day seeing the country in the spirit of bamfords garage. I'm intrigued by the idea of having a car that I can travel in and also being intimate enough with its engineering to know how to fix it on the road. I've got a ways to go before then.

Extra engine. It's a '53

I found this car on Craigslist a couple weeks ago. For the price he was asking I couldn't let it go. The PO put quite a bit of money in this car: new tires, gas tank, brakes, interior, starter, generator, exhaust , radiator, I also got an extra engine with it. An extra carb and three extra generators. I replaced the head gasket because it was leaking coolant . The people who put interior in glues the carpet and foam pad to the rusty floor pan. I'm working right now on cleaning that mess up. Rebuilt carb because PO painted it and the paint got into the carb and gummed everything up. Seems to idle and drive pretty good. Need to fix auto choke yet. Paint isn't perfect and it has a few small spots of rust and will need new window rubber all the way around having fun with it!

Thanks Merle How to do pressurize the cooling system?
