  1. Bucket 863807 are for the Desoto 1941 model S8. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  2. In 1934 Desoto only produced airflow model there was no other style offered in the deSoto lineup. This is even rarer because of being the coupe model. Yes drop dead gourgeous. The Desoto Airflows had the inline 6 were as the chrylers had the inline 8s. I would love to own this car or a 33 Desoto sometime in my life, just dreaming. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  3. I would say resleave your old cylinders. When the cylinders are resleved the old push pins should still work because you ahe the orginal cylinder. Can you get new old stok cups and then resue the same pins. Rich Hartung
  4. Fred, The coupe is the one that I was talking about. I retract my statement about the 4 door. Also the tires that are on this car are the correct tires with the ribbed affect they are goodyears. AACA states that all tires must match even spares. The orginal whitewalls of this vintage were double whitewalls adn there was a front tire and also a rear tire but these are not being made. I have met the owner of this 39 Plymouth coupe and this is how i knew about the dual sidemonts. The story is that the original owner always had dual sidemounts on her cars and wanted the 39 coupe to have them. Since they origanly available on one side Ply Motor division made a customized wheel wheel for the other side. As stated the current owner has the bill of sale and the original letter from Ply Motor Div to document the customization. AACA then had to accept the car for judging and can not deduct any points. They can deduct points if they find workmanship or paint issue and fit issues but not for the dual sidemounts. Rich Hartung
  5. Answer to judgin the brake cylinders. Since the brake cylinders are not visible becasue of the brake drum they can not judge these items. But if you put on a power disk brake system on a car that did not have this as an original item then they will deduct major points. My 39 Desoto had a single master cyclinder system and was not equiped with power disck brakes it came with drum brakes. If you changed over to disk brakes then the judges will take off major points. Remember AACA expects the car to look and be restored as if it just came off out of the dealers lot. They do not check for exaact color match but if a 39 Desoto had orange paint on the body they would question the color becasue they know that was not a typical color in time frame. The owner would then have to prove that the color was an optional color via documentatin or color chips. Here is an example. There was a 1939 Plymouth on the show field at Hershey severalyears ago. This four door convertable had dual side mounts. The cars were never produced with dual side mounts. The new owner had documentatin from the original ownere that this was a custom car that Plymouth created the dual sidemounts for the original owner at the factory and also had the original bill of sale and build sheet to prove that this was done at the factory. This why you need to have all of your ducks in a row when having a car judged at an AACA event. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  6. When the old style riveted linings were but back onto your old shoes the mechanic would do another step after the sets were done. They would put the shoe into the Ammco brake machine to grind down the lining so that they were in a perfect arc to the shoe and this would then take off any high spots also they would chamfer the end or taper the ends. This allowed the drum to turn and the drum then did not have a blunt end at each lining. With a tapered ends this helped the drum spin over the brake shoe. If you purchase the old rivet lining that was predrilled specifically for your car then the tapered edges was done by the manufacture of the lining and the correct thickness of linign would have been used so only a minial amount of arching the shoes would be necessary and sometime none at all. relining with the rivets is a very easy job to do. Rich Hartung
  7. If you plan to have your car jusged then blast the old fender bolts and reuse them. If you use modern botls they have markings on the head and these will cause a major deduction of points on your car. Each bolt that is incorrect on the fender will count if I remember correctly like 5 or 10 points each. If 10 point each and ten bolts on each rear fender you get a major deduction agains the car and this takes you out of the competition. Again determine what you plan to do with the car Show or Driver. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  8. I use a thin flat blade screwdriver. I slide this in between the pin and teh clip and then use a hammer and tap on the screwdrive shaft to push the clip up od down. The clip can be rebent. It is just a pressure clip and goes into a slot to keep it onthe eccentric pin. When at a swap meet look for these clips to haev extras. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. here is some ring gear info Rich HArtung
  10. I have a 39 Desoto and both of the sunvisors are chrome plated. I know i nthe literayre I see them mentioned that one was standard and and the passenger was an option but I have always seen two in all the 39 Desotos that I have seen and know about from my contacts. Send the painted one out for a flash chrome plating they do not have to be show chrome or triple plated nickel then chrome is fine for the inside. Rich Hartung

  12. Jeff. I would think and this is my opinion that the pump with the glass bowel would be the pump that was used onthe truck. The pump without the glass bowel can also be used. The bowel helps you know when there is sediment inthe line and to clean out the bowel. If the pump doesnot have the glass bowel then definately put an inline fuel filter on the truck. I own a 39 Desoto and my AC588 pump has the glass bowel. I would suggest that you post this onthe truck side so that the truck guys can better anwser your question. For AACA juding they are not going to be looking that close at the engine and will not get down under the truck to verify if a glass bowel or not. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  13. According to one of my catalogs that covers carb and fuel pumps the 1949 Desoto uses the cater fuel pump M639SB and repair kit M20,007B I would also think that an AC 588 would work in your car. Rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  14. The newer front wheel cars use a CV Joint rubber boot. You might be bale to find one that is longer enought and has the correct opening in diameter to fit over the metal housing at the pin and then the correct size to fit on the driveshaft and then clamp them onto each end. If the modern cars are using rubber and they are lasting then there has to be someting that can fit our older cars.. The leather iner cone is very hard to find as Todd had stated. I have been going to Hershey for over 20 years and have not seen any. I guess you could mke one out of some soft leather to fit the inner cicle of the hole on the housing and use some gorrilla glue to hold it to gether and then use a hose clamp to hold it in place. These are just some thoughts. I do have some literature o what the leather inner cones looked like and also the numbers on the various Pin and Trunions numbers and kits that were used on the various cars and truck. Be careful because they look the same but some are different model and have larger flanges and body lengths. When you purchase the new housing look to see if if has a grease fitting. This will permit you to grease it with out having to take it apart. Grease or the lack of it from being washed out is what casued these joint to go bad. In the old days there were to be repacked every two years. Rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  15. Todd I have copied both of the McCord Catalogs that covers 1909-1937 and 1937 - 1960 onto CD. The cost is $15. The catalog containded over 200 pages of information. These catalogs are very hard to find. I recently saw that a victor catalog sold for over $75 so what I am offering is very cheap and the paper will not get lost. What i posted is just one sample page of information. My price includes shipping. Rich Hartung
  16. Andy, Look at the Mc Cord Gasket page I posted. Mc Cord is vry well known for its gaskets and a parts store should be able to cross reference against these numbers. Mc Cord, Victor and Fitzgerald were all good quality makers of gaskets. Rich Hartung
  17. For Plymouth from timing cover set to number 137665 1933-47 Mc Cord ES1137 Timing cover and seal set ES1137-1 I attached a copy of the Page with this information for you I have the Mc Cord Gasket catalogs on Cd that cover 1909-1937 and 1937-60 The cost is $15 for both of these catalogs on CD which is approx over 200 pages of data just like what you see on the attachment. A victor catalog like this went for over $70 the other day on ebay Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Mc Cord Gaskets 1937 - 60 p 51.PDF
  18. Go to a junk yard and get a used fan if you need a 12 volt fan. These should be very cheap. Just athought. rich hartung
  19. Who ever wins this willstill need to rebuild the pump with the diaphram that can be used with the ethinol based fuels. Any NOS feul pump should be rebuilt. rich Hartung
  20. Hi this is rich Hartung. I currently have copied the Sisson Choke Manual onto a CD. This is very valuable in understanding the sisson choke operatin and also on how to adjust the Choke. There are two styles of this choke. One is the 37-50 with the arm on the left side of the choke and then the 49-50's sisson choke that has the arm on the right side of the choke like what you have in the picture. After looking at the picture i see the choke rod is already attached to the choke. You can not flip the early model to fit the later model. These are running around 175-195 on ebay. They have become very expensive over the last several years. I can be reached by email at Desoto1939@aol.com or call my cell phone 484-431-8157 onthe weekend or inthe evening after 9 PM Rich Hartung Valley Forge PA Desoto1939@aol.com
  21. Period Correct or aftermarket accessories are not permitted. If there is an accesorry that is onthe car then it has to be a factory option and it is the owners responsibility to provide the proof that it was a dealer option not an option that you could get from Pep Boys or a speed shop. One point to remember that the more factory options that you put onthe car does not necessary meanthat you get more consideration with juding. At times these extra items can hurt you. Every item that is put on can take off points because of paint, not fitting properly etc. So a plain Jane car really stands a better chance of scoring higher than one that is all decked out. There is not upgrade count on a car, basically it has to to be period correct so you can not have a sealed beam conversion on my 39 Desoto and have sealed beam headlights. The sealed beam even thought a later possible dealer option to help with lighting is not acceptable becasue the original car did not come with this and this is considered incorrect and major points off. radials tires on a car when radials were not even produced. The one point I am trying to make is that if you are going for a point car then please research what the various organizations are looking at so that you are prepared and knowledgeable about their system. Rich hartung.
  22. Time and the rest of the input about the engine number. When you take your car to an AACA event the judges do not look at the engine serial numbers. The perform a visual inspection of the engine comparment. They are looking to see that the engine is the correct vintage and that the engine block and head and other parts, etc generator water pump volt regular correct wiring etc are of the correct vintage that should be inthe engine compartment. They are not permited to climb into the engine area to verify that engine number becasue they could scratch the paint an or do damge to the car. So you could have a 48 engine in a 39 Desoto and if it looked correct and was all dressed out like it came from the factory it would get no deductiions inthis area. The POC is more likely to look at the numbers on the engine compatment to verify that the numbers match. But as you have stated you can grind downthe numbers and then put in an incorrect code and if the engine looked to be proper they would not even know. As an owner I would have a very difficult time if a POC judge and even an AACA judge started to get that close to the fenders and getting that deep into the engine area. I would have to ask them to not inspect the car and then take the car out of competition. No jusdge should ever be getting so close to a car to cause any possible damage. An AACA judge can not crawl under the car to look at the undercarraige. They are only permitted to get down on one knee to inspect the underside of the car. They can do this on all four sides of the car but thats as far as it can go. So AACA Senior car can stillnot have all of the proper parts and still get a perfect score?????? This is why judging at most shows have stopped and only participation awards are given. Even AACA jusges do know know everything abiout everycar so it comes down to how pretty the car looks and if it gives the overall appearance to look like it just came off the assembly line. Cars can be over restored according to AACA judging specifications. Also any pre 1946 car according to AACA can now have an electric fuel pump onthe car so long as it is not visible and is insalled in a manner to not be seen when getting down on 1 knee. Rich Hartung I have attend numerous AACA juding class and seminars. Desoto1939@aol.com
  23. Ozzie, Welcome to the club. You made a good selection on the Desoto. I have a 39 Desoto for over 25 years. Contact me I have a lot of literatire regarding electric parts and componenets and several Miller tool catalogs that I have scanned and now have them on CD's. Where do you live. rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  24. The running boards have been recovered with aftermarket rubber. I thought those would have been straingt metal and not have any covering. Rich Hartung:confused:
  25. The seller stated he would ship the car to you. Thee are fees to sip a car via a register car hauler and then if you do not like the car he will have it picked up at his cost. Check with Horsless Carrage company to get the cost to have it shipped to your home I would guess around $1.00 and more per mile to cover this. This is a scam!!!!!!!!!!!!
