OT Space(s) for Hershey Needed
desoto1939 replied to 1937 Dodge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
The sad point is that yes they have moved the plant to Mexico. But you still smell the Chocolate. I think the Hershey company must push the smell into the air to get you to buy their product. You should see all the people buying choclate at their store called Chocalte World. The funny part is that you can by the same choclate bars at your local store, WalMart. Target, etc cheaper that what you can by directly from the Manufacturer in their own store. But people keep buying it at the higher price. We love our chocolate and our sweets. Rich Hartung -
OT Space(s) for Hershey Needed
desoto1939 replied to 1937 Dodge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
The first Hershey AACA Eastern Fall meet started in the 1950's. Orginally it started out with the Hershey region holding a swap meet at the Hershey Football stadium inwhich about 20 members cleaned out their garages. They used the football field and did not cover the entire stadium. It has continued to grow from there and now has approx 9000 venders and then on Saturday for the car show they have between 1300-2000 cars on the show fields to be point judged. The undertaking of the event is overwelming. The Hershery region does a fastastic job every year. Just think of the logistics of regestering 9000k venders, marking off their spaces, the registering of the show cars and a car corral. You just need to go their once in your life just to take in the sites and you can not imagine that these many people come each year from all over the world to buy and sell car parts and cars. I have done this for 25 years inwhihc we had dirt fields that turned to mud fields after the rains. One year it rain so hard that there was a small lake in the middle of the Chocolate field and there were 4-6 Candian Geese swimming in the pond after the rain. HAve also been there when it snowed. Chet: Are the blister in an area inwhich there might have been some filler used and now there might have been sometime of contamination in the filler or bondo when they sprayed the base coat and the solvents are now working their way throught the top coat. I would also contact the paint manufacturers to see if they have seen this issue. They might have had a bad batch of paint or even the company that mixed the colors for you might have had an issue but have never been told that the paint went south. These are just my thoughts but sounds as if some form of old leftover solvents are working their way throught the final coat. Keep us posted. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com -

OT Space(s) for Hershey Needed
desoto1939 replied to 1937 Dodge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
I have been going to Hershey for the past 25 years. This is like going to MECCA for us antque car lovers. My wife always asks why do I go back every year. My standard reply is: JUST BECAUSE ITS THERE. The real answer is you never know when you will find that missing part amougnst over 8 thousand venders. Yes you have to look in the small areas in each verders space but thats the fun part of the excitement when you find that specila part. For us MoPar guys I find most of my parts not in the MoPar sites but in the non Mopar venders. Look and go into the small parts boxes and also ask questions because you never know what a guy still might have back at his house. I have found some of the most and hardest parts for my 39 Desoto like the inner taillight reinforcement buckets. Glovebox door with the clock, factory NOS fender skirts, NOS radio knobs when searching in a box of stuff on a Saturday just as the vender was packing up his items. You need to go at least once in your life. But you willneed 4 days to covers all of the 4 fields. Yes 8-10K of venders and you see alot of the early brass cars and items. It is an experience. I have been ther in the mud and rainy weather but that was the old Hershey now all the fields are blacktopped. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com -
Ok guy, I know this is not Furd site. But a friend of my father in-law has a cracked engine block in his 1951 Ford. They are trying to locate another engine for him. If anyone has a lead on an engine that is running can you please contact me with the information. I will then pass this along to my father in-law. I would need the name and email or even phone number of the person that has the engine and a best time to contact them. Any and all leads are welcomed. If I remember correctly your licensed teenage drivers are not permitted to driver our antique cars. Most of the antique policies require that the driver be at least 25 years old to driver your antique car even if they are a family member. Check your policies. Rich Hartung

Comprehensive coverage for the 48-P15
desoto1939 replied to Chester Brzostowski's topic in P15-D24 Forum
JC Taylor is located near my home outside of Philadelphia PA. I have been told that we can take our cars out for the occassionaly personal use on a Sunday or Saturday. I have also been told that these would be a maintneance run since we need to use the cars to keep the cars running and the seals working. I did have Collectors insurance with Congdon and Skelly but they have a linit on mileage. Grundy does not have any mileage limit. I think my policy on my 39 Desoto is for 15K and costs around 130 yearly. For all that have an antique car you do not want to use your regular car insurance carrier. You want a specialty company since they will insurer the car for the stated value and willnot depreciate the car like it is a used car that has no value. Grundy is a good company and I have had one claim and they paid out without any questions. Grundy has collector cars and understands the hobby. They are located in fort washington are in PA. Here is their link and they have a dilay drive policy: http://www.grundy.com/mvp/ Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com -
They do make a dula headlight relay allin one unit. The same unit works low and high beam. You also run a power wire 10 or 12 gage to the relay to get direct power. The other wires run from the floor high low beam switch to the rlay and then wires run tot he appropriate headlight block on the fender. I have one on my 39 desoto setup this way. Also check that you have a good ground on the headlights to insure that they are getting enough juice. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

My first car when I got our of colloege was a 1963 4 door blue Chevy II sedan. It had 36K original miles and had been garged all its life. It was my aunts and she gave it to me as a college presnet. Had a radio and no AC. Wish I had it back again. It was a great little car and was very dependable. I got this car in 1973 so it was ten years old at that time. Alot of cars have come and gone since then. And now drive a 39 Desoto. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

With 134 k on the odometer I would think the engine has been rebuilt during its life time. When was it rebuilt if ever? With 134K this car has seen alot of mileage and would assume that the suspension is also wornout and would need replacement. Need to know what has been done to the car with that mileage. rich

Ok, Here you got the 39 Dodge that I had as a parts car had the studs on drums for attaching the rims to the axles. My 1939 Desoto use bolts that htread into teh drums. So even back in to the 30's they were still using the combinations. I know the 39 Chrysler/Desoto used the bolts and the 39 Dodge/Ply used the lug nuts. I also know that the 38 desoto drums could be used on the 39 Desoto so they used bolts in 1938 for Desoto . Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com

Are you talking about the small flat piece of metal that connect to the door frame and then prevents the door from swinging all the way out and stops the door in an open position. If this is what you are looking for this is called the door check arm. try this search on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Military-Dodge-WC-M37-M43-M201-Powerwagon-truck-door-stop-check-arms-NOS-/300717228813?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item460424c30d&vxp=mtr or try this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1939-1947-Dodge-Plymouth-Truck-Power-wagon-Door-Stops-New-/140840381067?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20cabdaa8b&vxp=mtr Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

documentation for yr of manufature (how to)
desoto1939 replied to sixshooter07's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Her is an offical way to verify the car. Write to the Chrylser Historial division at Chrysler Headquarters. This will cost about $45 they will need a copy of the owners reg form and the serila number and a copy of the bill of sale if no reg form to prove you own the car. They will send you the build sheet and other great documentation on the car. I did this for my 39 Desoto and they even had the original build sheet with the official date that the car was built and also to which dealership it was deleivered to. Best $45 that I ever spent. Here is the address for Chrysler Historical: Send a letter requesting your Build Record to: Where is their web page: http://wpchryslermuseum.org/page.aspx?pid=400 Chrysler LLC Corporate Historical Collection 12501 Chrysler Fwy. CIMS 410-11-21 Detroit, MI 48288 USA Attn: Historical Information Be sure to include the VIN of the car in question and proof of ownership (a copy of the title, for example), a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check made payable to Chrysler LLC. If your build record is not on file, they will return your check. As of April 2002, the cost is $45 per VIN requested. (Note: The price may vary from $25 to $45 as of 2010; please check the Chrysler Historical website for current pricing.) In a week or so you will have a valuable piece of your car's documentation. Young Ed: I have seen these in the stores and also at swap meets. Have never tried one but this is a high tech item and another good quality product. Like I said in my prior posts I am not a prof detailer but just passing along info that I have acquired. This is why I like the forum. We get to see what other car owners are using and get feedback onthe pros/cons. Good product and if it works for you then keep using it. Thanks for the input Hope you have a great Labor Day holiday and get eh car out this weekend. Rich HArtung

The chamois is just an animal skin and has to be wet to be pliable. This is old school technology. The mircofiber is a fiber that has been split many time is more absorbent and not as hard on the body and paint finish as the chamois. A good chamois has to be given speail care to keep in in good shape and has not that good of drying action as microfiber. I did use chamois in my younger years but I have found that the large microfiber towels do a better job and they dry very quickly after I hang them on the line where as the chamos takes a long time to dry gets brille and then leaves small piesces of the chamosi on the car. If you are happy witht he chamois then continue using them. I am just stating from what I have learned from my lectures that I have attended and not stating that the old school is not correct but this is what all of the major detailers are doing with the cars that go to the major shows like Hershey and Pebble Beach so why not do what they do to eliminate scratch and swirl marks. Do not and I again say Do Not use any cloth such as a tee shirt to wax or even remove the wax on a car. These items have polyester fibers and they will scratch the paint. I ahve attended several lectures of car detailing. All details are now using Microfiber towles and wash mits. They also state to cut off the tags that are attached to the items that statge the materials that the item is made from. These small tags also will scratch the paint. Use a car wash product do not use your wifes dish soap. The dish soap has a grease cutting agent to remove the grease from your dishes, but if you use the dish soap it removes the wax from your car. Also get a 5 gallon bucket and then look into the Mcquire products line and then get an egg crate platic insert for the wash bucket. This goes into the bottom of the bucket and has holes in it. What happens is that the egg create permits the dirt to settle to the bottom of the bucket and then you wash mit sits ontop of the egg create so you then do not pick up any fine dirty and put it back into the wash mit and then when washing the car it stops you from scratching the paint again. Clay bars are great to remove contaminates from the paint. wash the car and dry with a microfiber towle. If you have a local Walmart you can get these towel at a very cheap price. You a detailers spray such a mcquires as the wetting agent. This has a liquid wax or polishing agent in the product. Spray this on the car ins samll section. MAke a small flat piece of the bar in the palm of your hand and then rub it in circles on the wetted surface. Then dry it off with a microfiber towel. The paint surface will not be as smooth as a new borns babies butt. You just removed the sap and other containates from the paint. Continue to do the entire car. You now also have put on same wax. If you want to finish the job then wax the car and use microfiber towels to put ont he wax and take off the wax. Sucggest that you look at Mcquires, Mothers, Groits Gargae and any top grade waxes. The new Tech wax are great to use and are easy to put on and remove. Do not use a chamois to remove the water ont he car. Get a California Blade. This looks like a squeegee and has soft rubber. after washing and rinsing the soap off the car then use the blade to remove the excess water from the body. Now you have very little water on the car and then use the Microfiber drying towels to wipe the car down to get the remaing water off the car and now you will have very few water spots on the car. I have gotten all of these tips while attending the AACA conventions that are held in Phila in Feb, they have seminars on car detailing. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

OT Oil Weight in new engines OT
desoto1939 replied to pflaming's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Merle: I do not fill the filter all the way I pour in the oil about 1/4 full. On my ford 500 the filter also goes in sideways. I have never had any issue with the oil spilling out of the filter. The prefilling of the oil stops the dry sump affect. WHen you intitally start the car with no oil in the filter you will hear a rattling sound for about several seconds this is because the filter has no oil in it and the sysem is trying to get oil up inot the channels. As another post you can change to a differnet viscoisty but only do so after the factory or extended warranty has ended. Prior to that then the factory will not honor the warranty. Amsoil make an extend full synthetic inwhich you chnage the filter before chnaging the oil. Cars are running cleaner and using the correct viscosity is important to getting the best gas mileage. This also plays a part in the overall perfornace of the car or truck. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com -
OT Oil Weight in new engines OT
desoto1939 replied to pflaming's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Ok I have a 2007 Ford Five Hundred. It uses the 5-20 blended oil. ALso read the owners manual to determine what ford code is uses that is compatable. You need to look at the Motorcraft oil and read the label on the bottle Code like MCxxxxxxxx. something to that nature. Your engine willalso have an oil usage indicator to inform you when the oil is ready for an oil chnage. I chnage mine every 5000 miles. But when I go the car new I chnaed it at 2500 just to clean out any small metal or sediments fromt he inital breakin process. Our newer oils can go much longer than the old style convential oils that we all are accustom to using back in the 70's and 80's. Mobil even has an oil that will go 15k but you change the filter at 7500. Do Not DO NOT and I say again DO NOT use an oil that is different than what the manufacturer has stated that is the required weight. If you use a different oil viscosity and then if the engine has a problem they will send out the oil to be diagnosed adn then the warranty is voided and you are up the preverbail creek without a paddle. Also when changing the oil pour about several ounces of oil into the filter before putting the filter on the block. This prevents you from having a dry sump and the rattle sound of bare metal. If you take the car to an oil change place ask if the prefillthe filter. If they give you a blank statre then do not use them. Go to a good oil filter person and if they state they do prefill then make sure you can see them do it. It is your car and you have a major amt of money invested. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com -
The use of starting fluid to get a car to turn over and run is not recommended. When squirting fluid down the carb and then you turn over the engine and the car dose not start you then have a problem if you continue to use starting fluid again for several attempts. The vapor of the fluid is pulled in to the cylkinders and since the car had not started then the vapor is not exploded and burned. The left over vapor of the fluid then settles in the cylinder and on the walls of the cylinder and then when the fluid drips down the sides of the cylinder walls it strips the lubrication off the wals and into the oil pan. So now you have not started the car and you let it sit a day or two now you have bare metal against bare metal. So now you trying it again with starting fluid and the car still does not start. the situation gets worse. If you are using starting fluid you need to get the car started as soon as possible to get the oil on the cylinder walls. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
