  1. I think the bigger question is what is the cost to purchase the dual intake, two carbs, linkage, replumbing, etc,etc to gain a few mph over the stock engine? Now if the intake manifold is no longer usable and the cost of getting a newone vs getting a split one and if you have the spare carb then I would say go witht he dula split. It all comes down to the money that you want to spend, what YOU and I say again what YOU want to do with your own personal car. We all have ideas of what we want to do with our cars. This is an individual things, some like to keep stock vs some like to add on spped equipment each a personal choice. If you have the time and knowledge and tools and most of all the MONEY and you wnat this look then go do it. You and only You can make the decision to meet what you want out of your car. This is why we are not all from the same mold we all have choies that we can make. The most important thing is that you have saved a car and you enjoy the car and you like to drive it. This is just my two cents. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  2. Rodney, looked at the sparetire and rim and noticed that it only had 4 lug nut holes. I would have thought that the 41 would have a 5 lugnut pattern? Is that typical of Studebakers? Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  3. If you can get a rebuild pump with the sealed bearing then I woud go with that as my first choice else the one with the zerk fitting to pur in water pump grease is my next choice. remember that if you over grease them then you can blowout the seal and then you get the ater leaks. so a little dab will do ya. Its up to you to pick Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. Miller tools had a special socket that had a magnet in the socket to hold the bolt when you take the bolt out. Here is my suggestion Get an extra Socket and then glue a rounf magnet intot he socket use gator glue. Then make the socket just longe enough so that the head of the bolt touches the magnet so that when you take the bolt out it will be held by the magnet and you can also use the same socket to install the bolt. I will try to post a picture of the socket from my miller tools catalog after i get home tonight. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  5. I have an autolite catalog that goes from 38-54 and there are no condensors with the 2-11 number. The catalog lists the condensors by the specific number that there were listed on the units. At some point in time Autolite did list some parts by this digit series. I think this condensor is an early part. Contact me: rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. here are three factory photos of the rolling chasis and a completed car with the assembler putting on the hubcaps and finishing touches. These are the photos that I received from the chrysler museum. Note that there are ONLY 2 stripes on the center of the wheel and not the standard three. the file size was too large so if you want the photos I will send them to anyone that asks for them Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  7. I have just received a historical report from the Chrylser museum with the build sheet for my 1939 Desoto. The cost to me was forth the money spend. They also include several black and white factory photo's. there is one on which that car is having the hub caps place onthe car. In this photo I noticed that the wheel pinstriping is not the same as what is on the rest of the Mopars from these years. According to other posts we state that there were three stripes on the wheel but my factory photo and like I sttates there are several that was included show only two stipes and both are same size in width as compared to the thin, wide, thin that we see on most of the Mopar's. I will scan the pictures and then post them on this post. So who is correct a factory photo for judging or documentation as per some other postings. I would say that the factory pictures are the more correct and I would use this as my proof when being judged. This why you need to have as much documentationon your car to prove the point if something is different than what is to be expected. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  8. Todd you are correct, you need to be a member of AACA to attend but you can register at the Annual Meeting for the event go to www.aaca.org to get more information Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

There is a lectures series on old trucks and also a lecture for Mopars. If you are planning on attending plase contact me so we can meet. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  10. I konw this posting might not be like by everyone, but today is a very very sad day for anyone that ever played or was coached by Joe PA. Joe passed away last night. Even with the scandal at PS he will still go down as the winningest college Division 1 football coach. Please take a moment to pray for his family, children and grand children. Joe willbe remembered and also pray for the children that were affected by Mr. Sanadusky. The children are the ones that being hurt the most. I am sorry if this posting affends anyone. 11. Do not get rid of this unit. The little spring clips are hard to find. If the bearing is stuck or worn out it can be pressed off of the sleeve and a new bearing can be pressed on. There should be a number onthe face of the bearing housing. The rear oil seal looks tobe used also look and the metal flane and there should be a number either a National oil seal or McCord or Fitzgerald number on the housing. I have lsiting on these two items. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  12. I looked at the pictures of the car and these are not 39 Desoto headlight trim. The 39 Desoto is more retangular. As someone else stated they are probably ford. Attached is a picture of the fron of my 39 Desoto. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  13. Hi, i own a 39 Desoto and onthe engine block where you have your number the first tow digit should be S7. My 39 Desoto is a model S6 and the 40 is a model S7. Where are you located I live near Valley forge PA. Send me you home email address so we can stay intouch with each other. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  14. My 39 Desoto had two options for the glovebox: 1. Plastic push button lock 2. Lockable push button Also this is where the clock is installed in my 39. It is in the lid of the glovebox and bolts onto the lid. Rich Hartung
  15. I have an old AC canister filter on my 39 Desoto. This unit does not have the drain screw on my unit. After taking out the filter there is some oil in the bottom of the canister. I just use a plastic kitchen baster to suck out the remianing oil. It might take me 2-3 times to get the remaining oil out of the unit and then I wipe it clean with clean cloth. When the baster stops working I go to the Dollar store and get a new one. I think it is eaiser to siphon the oil out then having to have another can under the drain. Just my 2 cents. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  16. Check out this positing on Ebay this is what you want. http://www.ebay.com/itm/35-36-37-38-39-40-41-42-46-47-48-49-50-51-52-53-NOS-MoPar-Brass-STARTER-CONTACT-/360398285682?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item53e9696b72 Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  17. This oil should still be good if the container has not been opened. Also this oil would have more of the old antiwear protection properties than the newer oils of today. I would not use this in your newer car becasue it might do some damage to the catalytic converter. They have removed some of the zddp properties in the newer oils. Just my two cents . I would definetley use in your antique car. I think the old metal cans would be worth more to a collector than the paper cans because over time they will start to leak so go an use them. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. I have a Wagner Lockheed brake catalog that covers years from 1940-1957 and also covers brake cylinders. i have scanned this catlog onto Cd and then is in a PDF format. The cost of the catalog is $15 and this includes shipping. Contact me if interested Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  19. Here is a compnay that can reproduce the original colors for all cars. http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/aclchip.aspx?image=1939-plymouth-pg02.jpg rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  20. Since there is only a single horn I might guess either a dodge or Plymouth might be a dodge truck. I would say mid 30's but by looking at the cowl there looks to be a hot water hose going into the right side of the cowl This is my best guess. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. I did some seraching and Dino20-40 was conventional motor oil. Your local Yamaha dealer has a product called Yamalube 20w-40 and online it cost about $30 for a gallon. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  22. 1937 and 38 Dodfe rumble set coupe fit 38 ply rumble set coupe 37/38 dodge business coupe fit 38 ply business coupe according to my hollander book Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  23. The bigger limos such as the desoto still only had the big flat 6. To increase the rated hp they might have insatlled the factory Aluminum head. On my 39 Desoto if they used the AL head then the hp went from 92 to 100. That basically was the only option. They also might have insatlled the overdrive but not sure if they would go to that expence. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  24. Instead of using the old method of pumpiong the brake pedal you could get the new siphon system for around $25 and then bleed the lines and this is a one person operation. Keep you eye on the Master cylinder to keep is filled with brake fluid. If you are converting from DOT3 to DOT 5 which is silicone then you will need to flush the entire system with denatured alochol and replace the 3 brake hoses, rebuild the MC with new fresh rubber and also each wheel cyclinder with new fresh rubber. The system has to and I will state again ca nnot have any of the old brake fluid left in the lines. Put the system back together then use the siphon bleeder and start with the right rear, left rear, front right then front left to bleed and you should be set. Rich Hartung
  25. The Chrysler 6, Dodge and Desoto from 1938-1948 all used the same muffler which was oval. Napa sold the make called Soundmaster and the number was 156. and Plymouth 42-48 also used the same muffler. The mopar number for the same as above is 676955. Marmont muffler is another compnay with the same years as above their number CR46. Hope this helps. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
