Do not and I again say Do Not use any cloth such as a tee shirt to wax or even remove the wax on a car. These items have polyester fibers and they will scratch the paint. I ahve attended several lectures of car detailing. All details are now using Microfiber towles and wash mits. They also state to cut off the tags that are attached to the items that statge the materials that the item is made from. These small tags also will scratch the paint. Use a car wash product do not use your wifes dish soap. The dish soap has a grease cutting agent to remove the grease from your dishes, but if you use the dish soap it removes the wax from your car. Also get a 5 gallon bucket and then look into the Mcquire products line and then get an egg crate platic insert for the wash bucket. This goes into the bottom of the bucket and has holes in it. What happens is that the egg create permits the dirt to settle to the bottom of the bucket and then you wash mit sits ontop of the egg create so you then do not pick up any fine dirty and put it back into the wash mit and then when washing the car it stops you from scratching the paint again. Clay bars are great to remove contaminates from the paint. wash the car and dry with a microfiber towle. If you have a local Walmart you can get these towel at a very cheap price. You a detailers spray such a mcquires as the wetting agent. This has a liquid wax or polishing agent in the product. Spray this on the car ins samll section. MAke a small flat piece of the bar in the palm of your hand and then rub it in circles on the wetted surface. Then dry it off with a microfiber towel. The paint surface will not be as smooth as a new borns babies butt. You just removed the sap and other containates from the paint. Continue to do the entire car. You now also have put on same wax. If you want to finish the job then wax the car and use microfiber towels to put ont he wax and take off the wax. Sucggest that you look at Mcquires, Mothers, Groits Gargae and any top grade waxes. The new Tech wax are great to use and are easy to put on and remove. Do not use a chamois to remove the water ont he car. Get a California Blade. This looks like a squeegee and has soft rubber. after washing and rinsing the soap off the car then use the blade to remove the excess water from the body. Now you have very little water on the car and then use the Microfiber drying towels to wipe the car down to get the remaing water off the car and now you will have very few water spots on the car. I have gotten all of these tips while attending the AACA conventions that are held in Phila in Feb, they have seminars on car detailing. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

OT Oil Weight in new engines OT
desoto1939 replied to pflaming's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Merle: I do not fill the filter all the way I pour in the oil about 1/4 full. On my ford 500 the filter also goes in sideways. I have never had any issue with the oil spilling out of the filter. The prefilling of the oil stops the dry sump affect. WHen you intitally start the car with no oil in the filter you will hear a rattling sound for about several seconds this is because the filter has no oil in it and the sysem is trying to get oil up inot the channels. As another post you can change to a differnet viscoisty but only do so after the factory or extended warranty has ended. Prior to that then the factory will not honor the warranty. Amsoil make an extend full synthetic inwhich you chnage the filter before chnaging the oil. Cars are running cleaner and using the correct viscosity is important to getting the best gas mileage. This also plays a part in the overall perfornace of the car or truck. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com -
OT Oil Weight in new engines OT
desoto1939 replied to pflaming's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Ok I have a 2007 Ford Five Hundred. It uses the 5-20 blended oil. ALso read the owners manual to determine what ford code is uses that is compatable. You need to look at the Motorcraft oil and read the label on the bottle Code like MCxxxxxxxx. something to that nature. Your engine willalso have an oil usage indicator to inform you when the oil is ready for an oil chnage. I chnage mine every 5000 miles. But when I go the car new I chnaed it at 2500 just to clean out any small metal or sediments fromt he inital breakin process. Our newer oils can go much longer than the old style convential oils that we all are accustom to using back in the 70's and 80's. Mobil even has an oil that will go 15k but you change the filter at 7500. Do Not DO NOT and I say again DO NOT use an oil that is different than what the manufacturer has stated that is the required weight. If you use a different oil viscosity and then if the engine has a problem they will send out the oil to be diagnosed adn then the warranty is voided and you are up the preverbail creek without a paddle. Also when changing the oil pour about several ounces of oil into the filter before putting the filter on the block. This prevents you from having a dry sump and the rattle sound of bare metal. If you take the car to an oil change place ask if the prefillthe filter. If they give you a blank statre then do not use them. Go to a good oil filter person and if they state they do prefill then make sure you can see them do it. It is your car and you have a major amt of money invested. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com -
The use of starting fluid to get a car to turn over and run is not recommended. When squirting fluid down the carb and then you turn over the engine and the car dose not start you then have a problem if you continue to use starting fluid again for several attempts. The vapor of the fluid is pulled in to the cylkinders and since the car had not started then the vapor is not exploded and burned. The left over vapor of the fluid then settles in the cylinder and on the walls of the cylinder and then when the fluid drips down the sides of the cylinder walls it strips the lubrication off the wals and into the oil pan. So now you have not started the car and you let it sit a day or two now you have bare metal against bare metal. So now you trying it again with starting fluid and the car still does not start. the situation gets worse. If you are using starting fluid you need to get the car started as soon as possible to get the oil on the cylinder walls. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I can also add that when I had the grill on my 39 Desoto replated we found out that the grill was brass so that is why it never pitted and kept a decent shine. The belt trim on the side of my car are all stainless steel. The headlight and taillight rings are pot metal. Rich HArtung

Plymouth Desoto, Groucho Marx, Phyllis Diller Connection.
desoto1939 replied to Roadkingcoupe's topic in P15-D24 Forum
On the You Bet Your Life Show Groucho was a spokes person for the Desoto and Plymouth cars. When I show my 1939 Desoto at shows I have a vantrilloquist Doll of Groucho and I put it on the fron fender. Some people just stare at the him and the oloder crowd always comments about Groucho. I then ask them why he is on the car and then I explain that he promoted the Desoto cars on his TV show. It is always fun to get the reactions of the older crowd because it brings back the memories of when TV was just in the beginning and when we had good wholesum TV programs that the general public could watch and enjoy without all of the violance and crime that we now see on TV and our video games. Any members heading to Macungie this weekend
desoto1939 replied to desoto1939's topic in P15-D24 Forum
This is Rich Hartung, I attended the first show which has all of the antique cars/truck and not the hot rod show. This is a great show for anyine that is inthe area close to Allentown/Reading PA. They have approx 1100-1300 cars on both Sat and Sun. There is not judging, It is strictly a car show and there are lots of craft tents for the wife and other events for the kids along with the community pool. This is held in the community park and has a band shell and reminds you of an old time day in the park with the family. This is a family event. Youmust be pre-registered for each day and you can not register at the gate. Lots of great cars that range from Full restored, to barn finds that people just get them running again. They have a decent flea market each year. Macungie is located off of Route 78/22 between Reading and Allentown and is close to the Allentown Exit of the PA Northeast Turnpike Exit. If more members attned then we could schedule a picnic one of these years so we can all get to know each other. Who would be interested? If so then send me your email address and maybe next year we can schedule this to happen. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com -
According to my Hollendar Interchnage manual these rear fenders are different numbers and do not interchange. The bolt patterns might be the same and also the indent for any running boards might be the same, but the big difference will be the taillight assembly and also the holes for the rear bumper brackets. I am not an expert on these models so I am just commenting based on the Hollander book. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Here is another idea. Purchase the current Hemmings Motor News. Then do a search in the magazine and look for Fuel Pump rebuilders. Look for Art Gould up in NY state. Here is a major fule pump rebuilder and should have some or as I showed you the pictures of two 588 FP's the arm is straight out on these units and this is the correct pump for your vehicle. You are going to have to spend some money to get these pumps but that is the only option left or get a used 588 pump at a swap meet and then rebuild it yourself. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

On the left wheel check the backing plate to make sure there is no burr on the plate were the shoes might be hanging up on the backing plate. I have seen this happen on some older cars. I had a pulling pbm but was not leaking any brake fluid, the lining was getting harder on the shoes so I cleaned the shoes with brake cleaner and then sanded the linings and cleaned all the dust out from the drum and then also used a fiber pad to clean the inside of the drum to make sure this was clean of anything that might be there. This solved my issue on my 39 Desoto. Some of the newer bonded lining and getting hard real fast and then the get a glaze and then the car will pull to that side. Rich HArtung

You did not indicate the original temp reading that was on the temp guage in the car before you did the flush and fill. ALso what is the temp setting on the thermostat that you have in the car. Has the car ever had a rebuild and has the engine ever been cleaned out and the block cooked? Did you use a cleaning agent to clean the block or jus flush with plain water and then refilled. If you in the block thermostat is set at 180 then you are not to bad. Also were you doing a lot of hills or just running flat roads. Have you had the radiator cleaned and rodded to make sure it is circulating water. You could also have some blackage here. There are alot of things that can affect the temp. Rich Hartung

Andydoge. I have the Desoto 1936-40 Master parts manual. If you can send me the part number out of your 40 Chrysler parts book I can see if my master catalog has the same number and then check to see if there is a picture of the clip and then scan the picture for you. Since 40 Desoto is similar to 40 Chrysler we might be in luck. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

Here is the pictures that you need to answer the question on the arm. According to my AEA carb and Fuel pump catalog for 46-54 they use the AC 588 pump and uses the rocker arm RA-7. I have a picture of two 588 fuel pumps that I currently have in my stock. Both ar NOS. If you look at the picture the arms both come straight out from the body and are in plane with the flat edge at the top. The distance from the flange to the lower point of the angle for the cam is 1 1/2 inches the length from the flange to the other end of the angle is 1 7/8 from the flange. This is the stock pump for your car and I hope this anseres your question. Call me if you want to talk 484-431-8157 cell. I live near Philadelphia PA Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

I just did a search on 588 fuel pumps and found several AC 588 pumps These are not cheap since they are not produced but they can be had for a higher price. I suggest that when going to flea markets still look for them and buy a couple just for the bodies and parts and then have them rebuilt. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Todd: If my memory is correct then this should cross ref to an AC 588 fuel pump that would have the glass bowel. This is what is used on my 39 Desoto and was used from 38 throuth the 40-50's. The 588 does not have the connection for the vacuum line for the wipers. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

For anyone to help we all need to know what year of truck/car that you have and also the model. This is needed so we can look up in our cross reference books. Also I would suggest that you purchase an electric fuel pump and install this as close to the fuel tank as you can get it. The electric pump will pump gas through the non functioning pump when it fails. So if you are onthe road or on a trip and the mechanical fials on you then just switch on the electric and the car will still run. They cost about $55 on the ebay also it helps when the car has sat for awhile and it can be used to prime the carb so you do not have to grind the engine and wait for the fule to be pumped from the tank all the way upto the carb. If you take out your old pump and can get a number off this pump then you can take it to a NAPA and then can cross ref also then you will know the correct arm location and style. Tim, You can purcahse a complete headliner that is already stitched together and has the loops for the rods from restoration supply in windber pa. I got my headline from them for my 39 desoto and I had some help from the person that did the painting on my car when we installed it. It takes two people to make the job easier. They also sell the windlace so I would suggest getting this at the same time. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I just checked in my 1936-42 Desoto aster Parts Catalog. You are very close. The Desoto used the rearend Part number 663472 from 1937-1942. these were used on the regular cars and not on the 7 pass limos and 7 pass sedan. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

I looked at the pictures of the tires and in the first tire it looks as if the whitewalls have been painted ontot he tires. There seems to be alot of cracking and blistering on the white walls. Also no brand is being listed for the tire. I would want some better cloesup pictures of the tires before bidding on them. The cost of 75 is not bad for the 4 rims with the beauty rims if someone need a set of rims. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Yes most definately the Grand canyon. I was there in 2008 with my family for a summer vacation. Pictures and words can not explain what you will see. Also take the helicoter ride over the top of the canyon the true sites are breath taking. Hope you have a great trip to the States. It is a shame but you will have just missed the biggest flea market and car show that is held in early October at Hershey. They have over 10000 vendors and 2000 cars in the show. If you get near philadelphia call me or write to me Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com 484-431-8157

The 39 desoto that I won has front and rear carpeting. The upscale model had the front and rear and the lower model had the rubber mat inthe front and carpet in the rear. Check your parts book for your car it should be indicated if there was carpet both ft/rear. Rich Desoto1939@aol.com
