I feel that Steele has the best rubber products but he is the most expensive. You can try Roberts and or Bernbuams also and maybe Metro rubber. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

When you did the brake job 20+ years ago did you use the Ammco brake gage tool to set the correct arc for the shoes. If you did not then the real issue could be that the brake shoes are not properly set to your drums. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Bingster: I thought you were the one that posted the issue of about no being able to find the vent rubber. This was my bad reply. Sorry, Rich HArtung

Bingster: Did you ever look at your post about the vent rubber gaskets. I found gaskets at Steele rubber. and you have not replied as to if this is what you were looking for. Forum members are willing to help but we have not heard back from you on that post. Rich HArtung with a 1939 Desoto Desoto1939@aol.com

I'd like to introduce Miss Caroline-this noob's 1942 Plymouth.
desoto1939 replied to mopardude's topic in P15-D24 Forum
dear 42 Plymouth owner. These brakees on these old Mopars are different that what you might expect compared to a more modern car. These are Lockheed brakes and have an eccentric pins that is used to adjust the heal of the brake to get them properly arced to the brake drum. Please refer to the reference section on the forum prior to doing the brakes This will provide you so great information. The mopar dealers used either the factory Miller tool or the Ammco 1750 brake gage to get the brake shoes properly arced to each individula drum. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com -
You can basically take the dizzy out of the engine block in any position sinc e the end of the shaft is a slot in a keyway inthe oil pump. I mark the engine block in comparision to a specific point onthe dizzy body then also make a mark onthe dizzy body to refernece where the current position of the rotor. Remember and I state again DO NOT, Again DO NOT hit your starter motor this will then chnage your refernece points. MAke the necessary chnages to the points or minor adjustment bracket. Then sect the reference points back up and then reinstall the entire unit. MAke sure that the slot onthe end of the dizzy goes into the key way in the oil pump. Tigh up the dizzy but not all the way. Hookup your timeing light start the engine and then fine adjust via the timing mark. The first time is the hardest if you have never done this but after you have done it you willbe proud of yourself. Ply Adams: I also have my doubts about this new tire design. i would like to get some real input from people that have them on their cars and trucks to see how they are handleing the corning aspects and the wear on their suspension components. I would not go out anpurcahse a set right now but wait for some more data reports. Rich Hartung

Cocker Tire has reently come out with a radial tire that looks like its a bias ply tire. Do not know alot about this new tire but if you call them or go therir web page you might get more info. Saw them at Hershey last week. If you plan on having you car judged at an AACA show then you will lose major points on just the tires, just wanted topoint this out to you. So you also need to know what you plan for the car, judged or a driver. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

Points, and other small issues/facts for discussions.
desoto1939 replied to meadowbrook's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I have converted my old oil bath air cleaner to using a modern paper air filter. It all depends on the style and type of metal airfilter that you have. I got my paper air filter at a NAPA store and the one that I have is a perfect fit where the old mesh oil bath filter did sit in the filter assembly. You will have to make measurements and see what can fit yours. Since we do not drive our cars that mush in dirty roads as compare to what they had back in the 30's then I felt that I did not need the old oil bath. I do know that some of the members do live on dirt roads so they might still use the oil bath filter. It up to you and your own situation and driving habits and also the type of roads that you will be using. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com -
If you are goi8ng to do a frame off restoration and remove the body from the frame then I would add some braking to the body so that the body does not twist. If you ever saw a ground up resto done at any quality resto shop they always add bracing to the body so that it does not twist. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Hershey Fall Swap meet Oct 8 - 11 anyone going
desoto1939 replied to desoto1939's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Bob: Glad that we could meet up and have lunch together. Let al ltry to plan to meet next year if the good Lord permits. Glad you arrived home safe and sound. When the prices are good the spares just seem to be better. I picked up some riveted lining in the box 2 complete sets with rivets. Might not ever need to use them but have them as spares. The airflow was a unibody car so I do not think there should be any wood in the body. Might be in the seats but I doubt in the body and floor pans. talked with a Chrysler guy at hershery and he said the say thing. I would suggest that you contact the Airflow club of America. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Recommendations on running board recovering?
desoto1939 replied to austinsailor's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Yes Acuff is an excelt running board revalculanization process. I do know that he was one of the first to reproduction the rubber for the 39 Mopars. He is not cheap but has very goood quality workmanship and you do use you existing boards. If you can strip the old rubber off and sand blast them that will save you some cash. Also touch base with Rodney B he has board made for his ply by buckeye and he seems to be very pleased with the quality Also it also depends on what you are planing to do with the car. Show quality or driver quality boards and you do not care that the sheet metal is not original it all in the eye of the owner and how mush cash you have to spend. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com -
Hershey Fall Swap meet Oct 8 - 11 anyone going
desoto1939 replied to desoto1939's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Hershey 2014: bob Toft and a friend and Rich HArtung all met up at Hershey on Thursday at noon to have some lunch together. The weather was perfect with a breeze and the SUN was shining. Bob had arrived on Wednesday and had done some walking around the fields. They were taken back by the size of Hershey and how many venders that were in attendence. Bob did find some molding for his plymouth along with a couple of small trim peices for his doors. I was able to find some NOS riveted brake lining with the rivets included for $10 for a set of four wheels. I pourcahsed two sets. A couple of years ago I had to purchase rivets for some brake shoes and the rivets alone cost me more than the two sets of brake linings so this was a real bargin. Found a few advertising items for my 39 Desoto. I willpost the pictures of the three amigos while resting our tired feets and backs from walikng the swap meet. Hopefully next year we can get more members of the club to meet at Hershey. Rich is the one with the Green Desoto hat and National Desoto Club red shirt. Bob has on his Plymouth hat and is sitting on the right and his friend is sitting on the left. So now you have pictures of the three amigos that went to Hershey this year. cONTACT A COMPANY CALLED grain-it IN fLORIDA. They are the ones that have trained all the guys on how to do the woodgraining on cars. They also sell a kit for the average car owner that has the correct wood grain and the apprpopriate paints and graining stains. You can regrain the garnish molding yourself. It is not hard to do but it taskes some practice. I have done a couple of garnish molding with their kit and also cheaper that sending out to a professional and then you have the pride of sayoing you did it yourself. Figure around 200-300 per garnish molding to be done by a professional and then you might not get the color match to be just like what is currently onthe car becasue of aging on your car. they can get close but might be off a shade ot two.. iF YOUR CAR HAS THE FACTORY ORVERDRIVE IN AND YOU HAVE A PARTS BOOK THEN YOU CAN SEARCH EITHER ON EBAY, FRANK MITCHELLS OR ANY OF THE VARIOUS VENDORS. THIS IS WHY EVERYONE THAT HAS AN ANTIQUE CAR NEEDS THE FACTORY PARTS MANUAL SINCE IT WILL LIST THE MOPAR PART NUMBER AND THIS MAKES IT EASIER TO FIND A PART AND NOT JUST BY ITS NAME. IT ALSO COULD BE AN AUTOLITE PART SO A PICTURE WOULD ALSO HELP INCASE SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE IT INTHEIR PARTS AT THEIR HOME. RICH HARTUNG.

You could use a very soft ligquid was onthe dah. Rememer this is a painted dash with a wood grained effect. Do NOT again DO NOT use any abrasive cleaner on the dash as this will remove the painted on graining. Myabe a groit liquird polish and sealer but very light onthe pressure and buff out by hand not with a machione. You could also maybe remove the garnish molding as it is called and then spay the two window molding with a clear lacquer or polyurethane coating to keep what you have. Sounds as if the graining has worn off becasue of the peoples arms and sweat and mositure on their arms have worn off the graining. The garnish moildings can be regrained but it is very expensive. The same thing has happened on my 39 Desoto and its from age and just plain wear and tear. Rich HArtung

I also just looked in My Egge MAchine Catalog and they list all of the engine components and these valves are not listed. If you are looking for specif engine parts then Get your hands on an Egge Machine Catalog. Their catalog is a great reference for engine parts and you can use their numbers to get and search for your parts. WWW.EGGE.COM r Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

I just checked my McQuay Norris catalog and I did no9t see this valves listed under the Chrysler and or Ply/Dodge. I do not have any thing on industrial so inmy opinion I would not buy them.j Send me you specific car and engine and year and I might be able to list the intake and Exh value numbers that you will need along with other internals Also if you are rebuilding the engine do not go cheap this is the heart and sole of the car and if the engine doesnot run then you are going nowhere.
