  1. Very nice car and awesome engine. Maybe those engine bay pictures are from before the fire. But if you leave that plastic fuel filter that close to the exhaust manifold you are going to have another fire. The plastic will melt and spill gas all over. I suggest at least changing it to a metal filter. Dual glass bowls at the carbs would look good.
  2. You can also down load a GPS speedo app on your smart phone. That's what I used on the P15 until I got the real speedo fixed. Then I used the phone app to check the accuracy of the real speedo. We used to use the mile markers on the highway to check the accuracy of the car speedometer and odometer. GPS is much faster now.
  3. The pins in the clutch linkage will be worn also. Check all the linkage - there will be more than one spot that is worn. The first picture shows that it was close to failing. The peddle had stopped returning to the top and this is what I found. After repairing the worn spots everything works as it should.
  4. Today is the big day. Gona be cloudy and raining by this afternoon. Still going to go visit with the family. And one of the guys that I used to work with is going with me. Won't be able to see the sun but it will still get dark and I get to visit with family. Not taking the 47 P15 - Haven't fixed the vacuum wiper motor yet. So I'm going to take the 2007 Nissan 350Z. Guess I could take my adult car - a ford flex - but that wouldn't be any fun. Into the darkness 😎
  5. I used a car cover outside on a small convertible car for years. It was made for the car so it was a snug fit. Even had pockets for the rear view mirrors. I didn't notice any paint damage but I'm not real picky about that. I have a one size fits all cover I use on the P15 once in a while. It's bigger than it needs to be so when I put it on I pull the slack out and use hand clamps to hold the bunched up material so it's snug on the car. Also keeps the pollen off the car in the spring.
  6. I'll have to check that out.
  7. Had the same slow starting problem with the 47 P15. Re wired the car with a new 6 volt harness and no difference. Added 00 battery cables and no difference. Finally I got a good AGM 6 volt battery with 1000 cold cranking amps. Problem solved. The car can sit for months and it still starts. No priming pump. On the third try gas gets back to the carb and it starts up and runs good. I also switched over to an alternator.
  8. This is Daisy. She is asking for something - I just have to open my mind and figure out what it is😄. Not that hard to figure out - she wants a treat.

    Pets

For several years I was hounded about getting a dog. Pun intended. Didn't want to do it. Not because I don't like dogs but because I do like dogs. I get too attached. I finally relented and on a Saturday morning and we took off on a two hour ride - one way - to pick up a basset hound puppy. That was eight years ago. Daisy is my buddy now. She hurt her back a few days ago and it was after hours. And the vet we usually use was going to be out of town for the Easter weekend and wouldn't be back until Monday. So I found an alternate local vet and took her in yesterday. OK I'm almost to the point of this post. I expected it to be a thousand dollars when I went back to pick her up. But I'll pay that - I don't skimp on medical stuff when it comes to people or pets. That's just one of the things that has to be done. BUT the bill was only 500 dollars - still not cheep. Now being of the old car mind set that means that I have 500 dollars left over to get some parts for the 47 P15. Not sure I'll get away with that😂 PS: I expected spinal problems in an old dog. But turns out it's only a pulled muscle. Really good news.
  10. Buying new tools - one of my favorite things to do. They don't have to be new - just new to me.
  11. I have always used screw drivers for these jobs. Just make sure the tip of the screwdriver blade securely grabs both sides of the brass. Grind down the wide sides of the blade so it fits in the hole. And it still works as a screwdriver when you're done.
  12. When I was younger I did a lot of sailing around and across the gulf of Mexico. On a clear night before the moon came up the stars were spectacular. Also saw a few fiery trails from objects entering the atmosphere. It always amazed me how often we could see the running lights of other vessels out in the middle of nowhere. And the glow of the towns along the coast when we got closer to port. Those glowing towns were a great navigation aid when running a dead reckoning course.
  13. I love a good meatloaf. And it makes great sandwiches for lunch the next day.
  14. I live in east Texas in the 99% zone. I'm planning to take the 47 P15 to my step brothers place about 30 miles west from here for the eclipse. The 100% zone. All back roads so I'm hoping not much traffic. If there is too much traffic then I'll turn around and go back home. The eclipse is just an excuse for a ride in the 47. And a chance to visit with my step brother. Also one of the guys I used to work with is going to come over and ride with me. Even if it's cloudy it will get dark for a few minutes.
  15. I do like metalflake.
  16. Simple test to see if it's vapor lock. Wrap the fuel line with aluminum foil after you get rid of that plastic filter. If that works then re route the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb to get it away from the exhaust manifold. And switch to ethanol free fuel if you can. These old cars run OK on fuel with ethanol but they run better without it. It could still be the coil but this test will only cost you a little time.
  17. Local glass companies have laminated flat glass and they will cut it for you. You just need to give them the old one for a pattern or make a card board templet. It's the same glass that's used in school bus windows.
  18. This is what the car really looks like.
  19. We did a photo shoot with Santa and the 47 P15 yesterday. Been trying to get together and do this for a couple of years. Yesterday everything finally came together. And it was a beautiful day. The phone used for the pictures made the paint on the 47 look much better that it is. I suspect some sort of AI enhancement. Looks like a new candy paint job. It is not. Any way me and Santa are tight - so if you want me to put in a good word I can do that.
  20. You could probably leave the key in these old cars and most people wouldn't be able to start it
  21. Same thing happened to the 47 P15. One day it worked fine then the next day the clutch wouldn't return to the top. Turned out to be linkage wear. Was able to repair everything with the welder. This linkage and pin were close to failure. Everything works fine now. Over spring adjustment not required. I did have to adjust the linkage after the repairs were complete.
  22. I thought about that part but where I live is mostly flat. And if that is a problem then I'll put the 3.90 back in. I'm aware of the spider gear difference but I also heard that if the splines are the same then it may work.
  23. Thanks for the PM kencombs. I haven't worked up the nerve to tackle the rear end yet. May do a few more easy jobs first. Both the P15 and the 56 DeSoto have eleven bolts but I ordered gaskets for both and they don't match. I would like to drive the car to an eclipse viewing get together on April 8. Where we are the eclipse would be about 95 to 98%. If we travel about 40 miles west we would be in the 100% zone. So I'll probably do the rear end work after that. The shop that I will use to do the final set up on the pumpkin after I switch the gears is really slow but very reasonable, I'm slow also so I don't think the car would be ready in time. More news later
  24. I am talking about the pumpkin housing. Sorry for the confusion. The 3.54 pumpkin I got is from a 1956 V8 Desoto.
  25. I like to do several easy projects in between the hard projects. Now it's time for a hard project. The 3.90 pumpkin in the P15 needs to be re built. There is a lot of slack in the gears. When I first got the car the pumpkin was pulled to check everything. Removing it and putting it back in was difficult under the car by myself. This time I'm thinking about pulling the entire rear end so I can work on it on the ground. I'll pull the axels first to make it easier to handle. The 3.90 that's in the car would probably last as long as I will own it but I want to change it to a 3.54. I have a 3.54 pumpkin but the housings don't match. From what I have read the gears should be the same so I will remove the gears from the 3.54 housing and attempt to install them in the 3.90 housing. I'll probably take it to the local shop I use for final set up. Not sure my shade tree skills are good enough to get the set up correct. I guess the worst that could happen is that I'll have to put the 3.90 back together and use it. As long as I don't break something. Remember - shade tree skills - I've been known to break things while trying to fix them. I can fix that - I think
