  1. HEY! I just finished installing a mini-split in my garage Monday. I spent all yesterday fooling around in the garage in a tee shirt, I think I even broke a sweat once. It was 27 outdoors and 72 in the garage, I was lovin life <3.
  2. I needed 2 new head bolts to replace a couple that were missing (broken off even with the head) but I reused the rest of the old bolts. I chased the threads on the bolts and holes with standard tap/die. I used black RTV on all the threads that go into the water jacket and haven't had any leaks. I will say that when I retorqued after a few heat cycles the old bolts felt much nicer than the new ones. The new ones seem to stretch and have that soft gonna break in a second feeling. The old bolts were a tighter fit in the head holes (after cleaning before RTV) than the new ones.
  3. If you touch my headliner pieces fall off. Sometimes if you just look at it things fall down.
  4. This is a week after install. I think I paid about 45 bucks for the rubber parts, I dunno how long it'd take to swap them if good replacements are found, maybe 2-3 hours.
  5. Since you brought it up..... I've had horrible experience with rubber parts, primarily from AB. Most of the rubber I've bought from them had failed, in some cases repeatedly. I learned about AB at the beginning of my project and used them for 90% of my parts needs. The prices seem fair enough for a 75 year old car. The customer service has been very good, we had a bit of a rocky start but they stepped up in a big way. They have sent me several sets of tie rod end boots, after no less than 5 full sets of their boots failing I switched to modern generic poly boots. They sent u joint boots on 2 occasions (all failed quickly) swapping those without taking the joint apart is a pia, I got one from moparpro and it worked fine. The back engine mounts are all cracked and I think they will fail well ahead of their time. They are still in place and I'm watching them. A few other small parts like hood bumpers and fire wall grommets are sketchy but aren't important in the grand scheme of things. The front motor mount is fine (it does have metric threads). The wheel cylinder kits seem like good quality but they were the wrong size so I don't know if they would have failed. The master cylinder rebuild kit is holding so far but my confidence had been shaken. I need to replace all my window rubber, not sure where to go for those. I sure don't want them to fail right after installing them. I should be happy I can find any new parts for these old projects, we are lucky to have 3 or 4 suppliers in this business. That said, it sure stinks to pay a high price and spend the effort to install a part only to have it fail in short order. Calls to supplier for refund or replacement, another wait for shipping, another disassembly and reassembly - ugh. All because of poor quality.
  6. Gosh Loren, you're sure old fashioned. ?
  7. You just reminded me of a weird set up I encountered long ago. I learned to drive a semi on a late 60s GMC with a Detroit 238. It had a goofy set up on the intake that took a Chevron ether capsule, they were little grape sized gummy capsules that a button poked a hole in during start up. If it was cold they were needed to get it running.
  8. I'm glad the Vaseline trick worked for you.
  9. Great new videos Keith, thank you for the content.
  10. It's a picture of truck info, isn't that close enough?
  11. Al Green and alcohol can't miss. ❤️

    Carb cleaner

I was shocked at the results but I still think I need the ultrasonic cleaner ?. The outside dirt would be easy to access but the inside dirt hides in the corners. I even found a wasp in one of the deep passages.
  13. Maybe a few hours in the garage alone with Motown blasting on the radio and a 6er of cold ones would help? It always makes me happier. Or maybe a strong laxative.... ?
  14. When I was a kid we had a worn out Suzuki that had no compression, a shot of start fluid provided hours of fun. It was already junk so no harm. I wouldn't want to use much on anything I cared about. A little wif might get you out of a bind.
  15. Goodness dodge4bya, I kinda get a kick out of the endless drawn out threads. It's the most entertainment I get theses days besides the high brake cleaner provides. I've read the shop manual lots of times and nothing replaces the school of hard knocks. I think the community of discussing theses old cars is about as much fun as the cars themselves. If you don't dig the endless threads just skip em. Life is short, be happy. rtfb

    Carb cleaner

  17. Hey all I bought a carb off eBay recently to replace my Frankencarb. It was pretty grimy and rusty so I was thinking I might have to piece the 2 together to make 1. I was going to use this project as an excuse to buy an ultrasonic cleaner but I saw where someone used pinesol to clean their carb so I gave it a try. I disassembled it and soaked in 50/50 water pinesol mixture for about 24 hours. I was blown away by the results, a very light brushing with a toothbrush and it looked very nice. I blew carb cleaner through all the passages then soaked those pieces in the mixture another 24 hours. After rinsing everything in water, blowing air through everything, and a light coat of WD-40 I reassembled and it looks great. I had no idea that stuff would clean like that.
  18. I like the color of your engine. I painted mine silver during the overhaul, it's not holding up well and I didn't care for the look even when freshly painted. Next time I have it out I think I'll copy yours.
  19. I think I'm going to have to rebuild or replace them, the leather is likely long gone. I wonder if you can take them apart and replace the leather with some kind of durable rubber?
  20. Good luck, I'm rooting for ya
  21. I wonder if there's a way to put a similar type accumulator on the wipers? The wipers don't work on my car or truck and its one of the things I plan to work on this year. It seems like there's a lot wrong with wipers of this era, hard to source blades, no pressure on the glass, vacuum motors don't work, run outta vacuum at the worse times etc.
  22. You could try taking the cover off the oil pump, packing it full of Vaseline and try spinning it over again. It worked for me.
  23. all my chrome came pre scratched in all the right areas, if I used a bumper jack it'd just scratch off rust
  24. that distributor is way too clean
  25. Its nice to see so many folks thinking through this and offering assistance, the car community is still a great place to be (despite the rest of the world going to hell in a hand basket). It's a good edumacation moment too, everyone that's thinking it through is learning whether we like it or not
