RobertKB Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Went to a farm auction on Saturday and bid on this 1954 Dodge (Canadian) for $10. I was the only bidder and won it. Picked it up today. Car is very badly rotted but is quite complete. This Dodge is basically a rebadged Plymouth for the Canadian market. Considering its condition and the fact it is a four door and therefore not popular, I am going to part it out and put the parts on ebay. I do not like parting out complete cars but this old girl is too far gone for a realistic restoration and its parts can live on in other people's projects. Plan on taking all the trim, glass, electrics, axles, drums, differential, tranny, steering box, etc. over the next little while. I will clean them up and probably in the fall or winter start selling on the bay. It's always good to have a project of some kind even if it is a sad old girl like this. It was sitting on the rims with no tires probably for the last 30 years but I could still shift it into neutral to pull it onto the trailer. Even the gas tank looks pretty decent. Upholstery is shot as it became a mouse house so will have to wear a mask when inside. At least it will keep me outta trouble for a while! Quote
Brendan D25 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Good deal Robert, you can't go wrong for that price. The one thing I noticed and like is that a lot of the western cars have tinted glass. Brendan. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 Brendan, yes I have noticed a lot of the old cars out here have tinted glass but unfortunately my own '53 Plymouth does not. Way too big a deal to change everything over. I do plan on taking the glass out of this car and selling it as it is all original. Back window is great but the windshield in not serviceable. Good to hear from you again and I still have the motor out of the truck you put me onto. Take care, Robert Quote
RobertKB Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 No, it does not. When I read the flyer for the auction and saw the car mentioned, that was my first thought as I would love one for my own '53 Plymouth. I always keep an eye out for these auctions as you never know what may come up for sale. Sometimes stuff goes for crazy expensive money and sometimes like this one for crazy cheap money. Quote
PatS.... Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Looks like $10 well spent. I have seen some of the ads for farm auctions, but have never gone because I really don't like crowds. It seems of you want an old low mileage 3 ton grain truck, they are plentiful but are they cheap? Were there any other goodies at the auction you went to? One other reason I stay away is I would drag too much crap home when I'm trying to downsize Quote
NatesSedan Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I bought a pizza last week for twice what you spent for that! Congrats on the find! Quote
greg g Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Well down here scrap steel is bringing about 19 cents a pound. So when you get it stripped sown to a shell you still could be looking at over 300 bucks in scrap value. It is getting out of hand here. Our little local pennysaver paper had about 4 advertisments for folks buying up "unwanted cars" to about 20. Seems aybody with a pickup truck and trailer is in the scrap metal business. I wnet by our collection yard the other day and there was line about 1/4 mile long waiting to cross the scale. pick up two a day thats 3500 a week..........Hmmmm I gues I will get those new tires for the old trailer. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 Pat, I try to go and buy just what I want but sometimes get carried away. I did bid on a brand new drum puller that was heavy duty and never used. It got too high for me and I let it go as I already have one. If I had really needed one, I would have gone higher but I was just bidding on spec. A few licence plates but they were outta sight also. Lots of old junk but some nice older John Deere tractors that went for good money. Item that was bid the highest but still did not sell was an old Case steam tractor that was bid to $23,000. Looked like it might run but God those are expensive to operate and maintain and have inspected. If I was the seller I would have taken the bid! Nates Sedan, hope the pizza was good!! Quote

Greg, our area went through that from about 20 years ago and there is virtually nothing older than about 1980 within 200 miles of here except for the big trucks which most of these guys couldn't haul. They just went door to door offering to remove the stuff for free or they would pay just a little bit. It's all gone now. Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Speaking of scrap prices has anyone here had a Catalytic converter theft from there modern cars or trucks? Quote
Young Ed Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 A neighbor a few blocks away lost one off his truck. Apparently so far they are targeting trucks because they can slide under easier. Quote
Normspeed Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Good deal Robert. Too bad the windshield's not good, Grandadeo is looking for a tinted one for his 53 Plym. That rear bumper looks pretty good. Is the chrome still intact on it? Quote
RobertKB Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 Norm, I believe the chrome is still intact although it shows the usual wear. I don't recall any major rust on it but will need to refresh my memory. The back bumper is a bit different that on our '53's as the licence plate light on our cars is just below the plate on the bumper and on the '54's there are two lights, one in each bumperette and they are both there as I remember. I guess it would involve changing the bumper brackets also to make it fit a '53. Windshield is not smashed but does have a couple of cracks in it. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Speaking of scrap prices has anyone here had a Catalytic converter theft from there modern cars or trucks? Yes , someone got mine off the toyota pickup , it just unbolted . I now have 8 feet of chain and 6 padlocks on the new one . They caught a local scrap dealer buying the stolen ones in a sting . Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 Who'd of ever thought you'd have to chain up the cat?? Quote
Gwellman Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 This car probaby has the long block six, which in itself is not rare. But the radiator, motor mounts etc, all those little pieces which would make it easy to put a big six into an American car could be really useful to someone looking to do this. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 29, 2008 Author Report Posted June 29, 2008 Yes, it does have the long block six in it. Everything is under the hood although th radiator core is damaged. Tanks look good. Quote
