greasing water pump

p24-1953

There is a special water pump grease, Lubriplate still makes it but you can't get a single user friendly amount any more. I have a half can of vintage WP grease I found in my father's basement. It has been said that boat trailer axle grease is a good modern alternative as it is formulated to be water resistant.

most modern pumps have been made to be "lifetime" lubricated. You can buy water pump lubrication additive to put in you cooling system.

I have heard that water pump lube is in anti-freeze also. But I think if anti-freeze is getting to your water pump bearings, supposedly to lubricate it, you have bad seals and will be buying a water pump very shortly.

Chrysler went to a lot of engineering work to keep anti-freeze out of the bearing area, and I trust they knew what they were doing.

Or am I all wet?

All three of my flatheads have waterpumps without a zerk fitting. I made sure when I got new pumps that they did not need greasing, just like the ones on new cars. If your pump does not have a zerk fitting, you do not need to lubricate it

I bought a full gallon of old stock (dated 1961) water pump grease on Ebay never opened for $34.00. It`s the brown waxy pump grease. Good for your washing machine pumps too!
