p24-1953 Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 can you or do you need to grease all waterpumps? the repair man. shows a grease zerk located ont he top. but mine doesnt have one? Quote
mackster Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 You can drill and tap your own zerk, if need be, but I don't think is needed. If mine had one I would use it ,but since it doesn't have one either I am leaning towards is not really needed. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 I believe there is a special kind of grease you are supposed to use on the water pump. I think it's been discussed here before. Quote
greg g Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 There is a special water pump grease, Lubriplate still makes it but you can't get a single user friendly amount any more. I have a half can of vintage WP grease I found in my father's basement. It has been said that boat trailer axle grease is a good modern alternative as it is formulated to be water resistant. most modern pumps have been made to be "lifetime" lubricated. You can buy water pump lubrication additive to put in you cooling system. Quote
Captain Neon Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 I add the water pump lubricant every fall when changing my antifreeze. I have had some people tell me that modern antifreeze's additives contain adequate lubricant. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 I have heard that water pump lube is in anti-freeze also. But I think if anti-freeze is getting to your water pump bearings, supposedly to lubricate it, you have bad seals and will be buying a water pump very shortly. Chrysler went to a lot of engineering work to keep anti-freeze out of the bearing area, and I trust they knew what they were doing. Or am I all wet? Quote
bob westphal Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 When these old flatties were built alcohol antifreeze was still the most popular. Ethelenglycol was a new product. alcohol is corrosive to cast iron. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Ethylene-glycol or any kind of anti-freeze and water will wreck your bearings. How the heck do you spell that, anyway, I'm too lazy to go out and look. Quote
grey beard Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Wal-Mart sells marine lower unit waterproof grease in those small cylinder tubes and guns that fit the tubes. It's green in color and much different stuff from the chassis lube-type grease we all know and love. This stuff works quite well in my old '48 water pump. JMHO Quote
RobertKB Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 All three of my flatheads have waterpumps without a zerk fitting. I made sure when I got new pumps that they did not need greasing, just like the ones on new cars. If your pump does not have a zerk fitting, you do not need to lubricate it Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 What happens if you put regular grease in your waterpump? Will it hurt anything? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 I bought a full gallon of old stock (dated 1961) water pump grease on Ebay never opened for $34.00. It`s the brown waxy pump grease. Good for your washing machine pumps too! Bob Quote
T120 Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 Lubriplate 115 is listed as water pump grease. It can be ordered on line, $12.67 for a 14 ounce can. Quote
