Items located in a shop and its ability to resist rust is lot different that an item in direct contact/exposure to the elements. Primer is not a sealer..it is porous...(even Rustoleum Rusty metal primer will not protect forever uncoated) it will allow for some holdout quality but not substained exposure and not for extended period of time..odds are if left in the elements long enough, the surface rust will start on the metal surface and not show to the maked eye. In my book, if it is tough enough to get time and funds to do it now..where ya going to get it later...and redo is always more of a pain in the butt...and as the surface may also have bondo in areas..remember again..this stuff is super porous also..and will take longer for rust to show but believe it..it is going to be there if left any period of time in the elements without sealed topcoat. Even if left in a barn with rood etc...condensation will grab it and though slower, results will be the same. All it takes is a couple days where the temp of the vehicle reaches the high/lo needed for dew to form.

Ed....you could just spray can it black, or flat black, or primer, or anything

you like at this point. You could make it red or green or blue. Just do

whatever you like, I'd say.

Not sure I'm ready to resort to spray cans. I'd like to see this thing be all 1 color. The space needed to do the actual paint is without electricity. The shop here in the cities is functional but kinda small and the neighbors might not like the smell if we painted a whole car. So far no ones complained about just the small parts we've done.

There is a program on cd that you can purchase at paint stores that allows you to change the colors on a jpg of your house, a room, yourself, or whatever so you can see the finished product before you buy the paint. If you are interested in experimenting, I think I picked mine up at sherwin williams. They are not free but all paint stores should have em. Todd Bracik.

for those of you looking for a good satin paint job, check out hot rod flatz available through www.kustomshop.com. I've used it on a car that I shot myself comes pre mixed with the right amount of reducer. You just have to add, hardener and shoot.

Best of all its got uv protectant included in the mix. It is not a primer but an actual one stage pre-flattened paint. Good aray of colors too.

I'm with Pat S. on this one as I don't like primered or primered looking cars. In fact the whole ratrod scene leaves me cold. I know of quite a few nice cars that have been bug***ed up just to give them the ratrod look. Don't have a problem if the car was a basket case or missing stuff to begin with but leave the nicer cars alone. Also don't have anything against black as my '38 Chrysler is as black as they come. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Ed, I can see doing the primer thing to your car as it has a purpose to match the car the same colour for now and prepare for a paint job later.

Tim, you've been hanging around too many military bases.:) Olive Drab is just that, Drab. Got rid of everything that color way back in 1967, and vowed never to be afflicted with it again.:D

You could even make it two tone, using two colors of primer.....like this

On the OD green...well..mix that with your flat black..throw in a little tan...install a rifle rack (winch optional but mega value) and the car just increased in value across the southern belt line of America...

My dad and I try to make follies every year if possible. We were at the first one they had I was eight years old. Probably the best show around for street rods best value for the family.:cool:

That weird looking car is a 46-48 Chevy coupe......with a couple custom

touches......sitting in a huge puddle of water over in a small town

in Oklahoma. Was just driving around thru each small town between

Joplin and Miami, OK one Saturday seeing the sights. And this one sure

is a sight.

Norm whos car is that? The stainless down the center of the grill sure looks like it should fit a 40 pickup but the #s dont match. Always wondered how different it really is. The last restored 40 ply truck center stainless that was on ebay went for 1200 bucks. So I need an alternative!

I do like the look of it in flat black. I think the plan now is to primer it black as I intended but not to go to bare metal before hand like I thought. The factory paint that is still remaining will protect that metal and the primer over it will just make it match. And hopefully the primer thats not over old paint will protect that metal too. Yes the primer will eventually be wasted but if it makes it look better for a couple summers and protects the bare spots its not so much of a waste in the end.

Ed, the epoxy primer should stand up well for a couple of summers use, it is a much better product for sealing and durability than ordinary lacquer primer.

When your ready to wrok on top of this product yaou should be able to scuff it up, do body work, sand and prime with a urethane based primer such as PPG K36 or K39.

Afriend of mine put his 1946 Chev panel in black Transtar 2k epoxy primer, he drove it every summer like that for 4 years before painting, he and his wife figured they preferred the primer look.

On my 47 Chrysler it is all in primer at the moment, but I need to do body work, panel alignments, and may shoot epoxy primer over it all, then drive it for a bit and then do the final prep for paint, not sure at this point, a lot of mechanical to sort out yet.

I think one thing is for sure though, no upholstery work will get done until the body and paint is completed, too much dust from body work, not the best idea for new upholstery.

Can hardly wait to pay for the chroming,notttttttt!!!!! Thats when things will start getting expensive, interiors and chroming.

Thats good to hear. Now I just gotta wait til spring and hope I can get it done. As always there are a few projects going on :)
