GTfastbacker Posted February 23 Report Share Posted February 23 (edited) Gentlemen, the electric wiper motor in our 41 Dodge Business Coupe is not working. Since the Shop Manual shows a vacuum motor i think it’s a replacement. But it looks very correct so maybe a interchange from a later model? It reads auto lite 6V EWD-4001. I fear to remove it i have to disassemble the whole dash? Maybe it’s a common problem and easy fix? Can someone show me the right direction please? joecoozie Posted February 23 Report Share Posted February 23 This is a long shot but worth a try and I may get laughed at but......... while you have the power on to the wiper motor try to tap it with a handle of a hammer. desoto1939 Posted February 23 Report Share Posted February 23 if you remove the wiper motor then take off the outer cover, The grease inside the motor and the gears have been clogged up with the hardened grease. JBNeal Posted February 25 Report Share Posted February 25 From the pictures posted, this wiper motor appears to have newer conductors, but that grease residue on the gearbox cover looks original, so as mentioned, that old grease may have hardened and jammed the gears up and will need cleaning out thoroughly for replacement grease. The contact switch does not appear to have been touched, so the internal contacts may be dirty and impeding current. Those switches are made like the headlight switch so that the metal tabs can be bent a li'l bit to free the internals for rejuvenation. On the Pilot-House trucks, removing the wiper motor requires standing on one's head to remove the 2 small retainer clips that hold the wiper arms to the wiper motor cranks, then removing that slotted screw at the base of the motor housing that grounds the motor to the dash brace. With the wiper switch loose from the dash, 2 big Phillips head screws hold the wiper gearbox to the dash, so that the wiper motor assembly can be lowered from behind the dash. The pictures shown appear to be of a similar installation, so if ya can stand on yer head again, that wiper motor can be withdrawn for rejuvenation 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

GTfastbacker Posted February 25 Author Report Share Posted February 25 After 2 Days in the Garage everything works again as it should. The limit switch had no contact just like the wiper switch. The circuit breaker was also out of contact. Then I cleanrd the collector on the rotor clean and cleaned the slots between the contacts. The brushes were made common and the tread cleaned. Everything was thoroughly cleaned in gasoline, re-greased and it's a miracle, the engine works like new again! Even the removal was relatively easy if you removed the glove compartment and the radio first. Many thanks to everyone for the various useful tips!
