OUTFXD Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Had a beautiful day yesterday! Sadly it was darkened by Jacquiline refusing to go into Reverse. Its been getting harder and harder to go into reverse for a while now. Went out and ckecked the linkage under the hood but no joy. doing a bit of research I came across these threads. They seem to be addressing the same issue I am having. Can anyone translate them into pilot-dummy talk? To sum up. I have 1st 2nd and 3rd, but no reverse. , Quote

FarmerJon Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Are you talking about the screw that retains the selector shaft? (Circled in red) It is just a 1/4-20 screw, .396 long (from under the head) with the threads turned off .160 of it, down to .150, and a lock washer. 1 Quote
FarmerJon Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Both of mine had a minor flat worn in them. unless yours is broken off or endplay is excessive (no spec i can find, but .050 or more would be suspicious, my two were .007 and .020.) I would hunt for trouble else where. Have you adjusted your clutch pedal? What happens when you shift into reverse? Does it grind and prevent you from going into gear? Does it go into gear but no movement? 1 Quote

I try to shift into reverse and it just stops moving at the point where it normally would shift out of Neutral. Fairly solid, Dosent feel bound up, Feels blocked off. Dosent go into gear at all. I had to make the adjustments after replacing the tranny mounts, that’s why I suspect yours have sagged. 1 Quote

Nope, No action with the engine off. And actually yes. I managed to get her (Rather easily I might add) Into reverse by moving the levers by hand! Quote

soth122003 Posted February 7 Report Posted February 7 Easy check to see if the tranny mounts sagged. Jack up the tranny/bell housing about 1 inch and try to shift. If it shifts smooth your mounts have compressed/sagged. Linkage doesn't usually go out of adjustment unless you did some work on the clutch or tranny. The mounts however get compressed over time. OUTFXD Posted February 7 Author Report Posted February 7 (edited) Got out and inspected the linkage. The adjustment screw for the Gear selector rod was less than finger tight. I adjusted it down until all the slack was gone, then turned it back 1/2 turn. .. then ran into the issue the Previous owner ran into. The adjustment nut and the lock nut are both really skinny, Making it hard to tighten down the lock nut. I did my best, I plan on replacing the nuts with wider nuts so I dont have to fight to get the wrench on just one nut. I did not get a chance to try the jack up the trans test, suggested by soth12003. but a visual inspection showed the mounts to be well hammered. I wouldnt be surprised to find out they are factory installed pieces. I do, however, have easy access to all four gears! Thank you everyone for talking me through this!
