Kilgore47 Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 I'm probably just old fashioned. But I have never paid for an app. And yet for the third time a recuring 1.99 fee for an app has shown up on my checking account. I always get it removed and replace the card. I'm sure many people have several app fees coming out of their accounts and probably wouldn't notice an extra one. All that said - I do use an app (supplied by the bank) on a regular basis to check my accounts. That way I can catch stuff like this. I use a separate account to buy stuff and pay bills. Only a small amount is kept in this account and that way if they do get into it they will only get that small amount. If they get 1.99 coming out of enough accounts per month that could add up quick. Check your accounts. Quote
kencombs Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 It would be helpful to know the name of the company that is doing this. I had a similar issue with a company out of Las Vegas years ago. They are long gone. They hit one of our accounts for months before we caught it. Did get a full refund, but it took communication to the FBI, Nevada attorney general, Las Vegas police and county sheriffs office to get their attention. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 NAH.....you not old fashion, I am old fashion, I refuse to use a smart phone for very much this reason along with tons of other reasons....guess I just don't have a need to be that 'in touch' however phantom charges do often occur.....I had a small interest fee on one account...I have not paid interest in over 30+ years on any card (ex has long been an ex). I called and inquired....even they could not explain the charge....I was credited...it was not the amount as much as the principle. So yes, like you, I do read my statements as they come in and verify all charges are correct. Quote
Los_Control Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 Since it is a app, and reoccurred after changing your card, it must somehow be tied to your phone service provider? So when the bill got paid with the new card the app charged continued? I Dunno. I do have a smart phone, for my needs I have used page plus for cell phone service for over 10 years and happy with them. They actually sell new & used phones on their website .... I have some android phone I paid $50 for it from them. They sell pay as you go, or monthly plans. Usually changing your card will correct future issues. Once you identify a current charge. My bank called me once telling me my wife had a suspicious charge on her card, suggested a new card. It turned out to be a 3 years subscription to some magazine we never read. The bank worker was very helpful & gave me the info she had, I got a phone # & called them up ..... Was simply a front company for you to call up and complain to. Some 20 year old kid answers the phone, ask how they can help you? Me: I want to know why my card was charged for this? ......... I know the wife ordered something online from a sketchy provider, in the fine print was a box checked to add to the order. Was up to the wife to uncheck the box. .... Sketchy not illegal. 1 hour ago, kencombs said: It would be helpful to know the name of the company that is doing this. In my case, the company simply hires a complaint department. The 20 year old kid is the complaint department, has hundreds of companies that are shysters & sell sketchy products, then they hire the complaint department to take the heat. The whole time the kid tells you he knows nothing about nothing, I can not verify this, can not look that up .... no clue about that ..... the whole time they are laughing at you ... what they do all day long. Again it is usually legal, but sketchy .... up to the buyer to read the fine print, even in court the company would win so police are not really spending much time on it. Quote
Bryan Posted May 13, 2022 Report Posted May 13, 2022 One thing I don't use my smart phone to pay for anything. I don't connect it to Facebook or Twitter. Don't want it dinging all the time. Do use it for maps and to find good restaurants, and look over their menu before we go in. Getting some crank messages trying to get me to click on a link. All sorts of phishing type stuff, oh your Amazon account has been canceled, etc. With Verizon I can change my phone number online in 5 minutes, just have to let close friends, family, doctors, and some recurring business contacts know. Learning not to give my number out at any store, not Lowes, Tractor Supply, etc. Doesn't take long after that to start getting junk. Quote

It's always a different made up name. The last time this happened it was for 22 dollars. Went to the bank and they called the number that was on the charge. It was someone's personal voice mail. I suspect that the info is taken at a restaurant when they take the card away to pay the bill. Used to always pay cash but now I use a card so I can keep track of everything I spend. 1 Quote
Kilgore47 Posted May 18, 2022 Author Report Posted May 18, 2022 This is what showed up on my account. Apple, com 866-712-7753 I thought it was a random thing. Then I looked it up on line and turns out this is a common scam. And it's been going on for years. You would think that THEY would track it down and stop it. Who ever THEY is. It is supposed to look like an iTunes charge. And you just think someone with access to the card purchased a song or songs. Some people have had this charge coming out of their accounts for a long time. 1 Quote
linus6948 Posted May 19, 2022 Report Posted May 19, 2022 Caveat Emptor is as relevant now as it was centuries ago when the phrase was first coined. There is quite a large streak of larceny that runs thru the human race and the bad ones always seem to be riding on the cutting edge of technology with new methods to separate you from your money.
