john portala Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 do you always replace the tappet cover gaskets after adjusting tappets or just put a sealant on used ones? John Quote
desoto1939 Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 Replace the gasket. They have cork and also rubber gaskets. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
john portala Posted May 22, 2021 Author Report Posted May 22, 2021 thanks Rich I was in a hurry to start driving again used the old ones and have a pretty good leak . Haste makes waste I never learn. John Quote
desoto1939 Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 if they were the old cork then they probably ripped apart when you took off the metalplates also there are circular paper gaskets for the thumb screws also in the gasket package. You can also put some sealant around the plates. Rich Quote
Andydodge Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 Completely clean the metal and use contact or superglue to attach the new gaskets onto the metal plates, then a fine smear of gasket sealant of some sort on the gasket............andyd... 1 Quote
allbizz49 Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 I clean everything with acetone and use edelbrock gasgacinch. No leaks ever. 1 Quote
Tom Skinner Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 It is good to use the cork gasket. Seal one side. Let Dry. Use Grease on other side and not have to keep replacing it everytime you might have to go back in. Of Course an old gasket is just that, and would probably need replacing. Don't over tighten Thumb Screws (snug is enough) 1 Quote
Sniper Posted May 24, 2021 Report Posted May 24, 2021 Be nice to know where to get the rubber versions, all I ever saw was cork types. Quote
kencombs Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 I was tempted to try 'The Right Stuff' gasket material/maker/sealer as the only gasket on the last one I put together. Seems to be an ideal spot for that stuff. No pressure, very low torque load etc. But, I had a set of gaskets so I used them. But, a very light coat of RTV on both sides. I put gasket sealers of any kind on with my fingers. Gloved of course. That way I can get an even coat with no danger of excess getting anywhere it's not wanted. Quote
