if they were the old cork then they probably ripped apart when you took off the metalplates also there are circular paper gaskets for the thumb screws also in the gasket package.

You can also put some sealant around the plates.

Completely clean the metal and use contact or superglue to attach the new gaskets onto the metal plates, then a fine smear of gasket sealant of some sort on the gasket............andyd...

It is good to use the cork gasket. Seal one side. Let Dry. Use Grease on other side and not have to keep replacing it everytime you might have to go back in.

Of Course an old gasket is just that, and would probably need replacing. Don't over tighten Thumb Screws (snug is enough)

I    was tempted to try 'The Right Stuff' gasket material/maker/sealer as the only gasket on the last one I put together.  Seems to be an ideal spot for that stuff.  No pressure, very low torque load etc.  But, I had a set of gaskets so I used them.

But, a very light coat of RTV on both sides.  I put gasket sealers of any kind on with my fingers.  Gloved of course.  That way I can get an even coat with no danger of excess getting anywhere it's not wanted.
