How much up and down travel is there of the control rod when shifting ?

Mine is installed with two new bushings and is very very stiff.

Too much paint perhaps?  Do these fiber bushings require oil?

Not sure Clay. No experience with the column shift mopar. Had a few instances in my build though that I chose paint and then redid in zinc plating because I had issues with movement between parts.

If someone with the same setup could photo theirs as either with paint or without......

Sorry about the quality of the picture but you can see

mine's not painted where the bushings are & the shaft moves

nicely. Maybe just taking the paint off will free yours up.

This is a Plymouth, by the way, but same set up.

While you may be on  track with your problem for repair, that shaft only moves a small amount up and down and can be very touchy on the all small adjustments on the rod and position. Mine sure were!

Just another thing to check.

Marc,

Two gear shift bushings.

One in a flange welded to the steering column tube seen in these photos.

Another in the top bracket just below the steering wheel.

I found mine on ebay some time ago.

Check parts book illustrations .

I got tired of the three on the tree so fabricated a floor shifter. The shifter movement from R - 1 and 2nd to 3rd is only 4.5 inches, quick and simple!

Yes, those fiber bushings should be oiled.  Shop manual just calls for motor oil, but light machine oil will work, too.  Unknown what affect paint on those parts has, mine is original with no paint.  No shifting issues.

Seems you should not have painted that shaft!  Just a suggestion. Mine is nice and clean.

Yes, PF. Lesson learned, and passed on here for future use.

Took the sandpaper to it today, and oiled the bushings.

Will reassemble soon and try it out.

VERY cold in the garage today.
