55 Fargo Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Hi all, I have sealed up the floor, the trunk area, but I still smell exhaust, in the car. I did drill drain holes down at the bottom of the rocker area under the 1/4 windows, I do not have door panels on yet. My exhaust sytem is new, pipe from manifold to Smithy Muffler, but no tail pipe yet. Could this be the problem, no tail pipe, the exhaust s coming out of the muffler right under the car just under the seat area. I suppose there might be some tiny voids allowing in exhaust gas, and with no tail pipe it is probably 10 times worse, because the gas is exiting under the car, instead of out behind it.........Fred Quote
Normspeed Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Fred, adding a tailpipe will probably cure it. Quote
claybill Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 duhhhh! fred , thats it. i've been there and thought the slipstream would carry it out...nope. how does it sound with the smitty? the pipe will mellow it quite a bit. billl Quote
Brendan D25 Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Fred, I know you live on a dirt road, so you probably know this. If you drive with your window open, fumes and dust wil be drawn into the car. I learned this over 40 years ago, back then my cars usually had rusty floors and trunks and some burned oil. Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 10, 2007 Author Report Posted October 10, 2007 Hey Claybill, It sounds great the Smithy that is, yah, suppose that was a no-brainer. I had to do a lot of floor rust repair and such, just wanted to make sure it wasn't my floor patch job. Having a tail-pipe exhausting evrything out the back will no doubt cure this............Duhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Quote
greg g Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Hey Fred, A few years back a couple guys had SAAB 96's for Ice racing cars. they ran the exhuast outa the hood up the pass side "A" pillar and over the roof, with the end pointing up, you might give that a try.......... Quote
Brad Lustig Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 A clothespin might be an alternative. Clip it over the 2 air intake holes on your cranium. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 A clothespin might be an alternative. Clip it over the 2 air intake holes on your cranium. Brad; Will this also work on a modified cranium? I believe latent LDS modifications may still be in play:confused: Quote
Normspeed Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Don, here's a simple test. Is the picture below a two door or a 4 door sedan? Brad; Will this also work on a modified cranium? I believe latent LDS modifications may still be in play:confused: Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Here's another eye test for you. Believe it or not, this image is not animated. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 Geez! Flunked both tests:cool: Quote
Allan Faust Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Don, here's a simple test. Is the picture below a two door or a 4 door sedan? That's easy Norm.... its a 4 door..... Allan Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Don, here's a simple test. Is the picture below a two door or a 4 door sedan? I can't really tell Don...someone parked a bus in front of it... Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 12, 2007 Author Report Posted October 12, 2007 Greg, do yah think this wold give the Crashler the custom look. Sorry it sounded like a dum question, but I want to make sure I have this done right, don't need to gas my self with pleasure..........Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 12, 2007 Author Report Posted October 12, 2007 Ididn't mean for this to be the dumbest question of the year on the forum, but having my exhaust piped to the very back of the car, as it should be, will this make a big difference.........Fred Quote
greg g Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Sorry Fred, couldn't resist. Don't want you sucking up any fumes. There was a trend around hear in the late 60's to end your exhaust just in front of the rear axle. Lotsa light headed guys at the burger shack. It does look like your floor is sealed up well enough to stop the fumes when the plumbing is complete, either over head or under foot. Quote

Somebody could swoop in and steal the award from you. As long as the whole exhaust system is tight, this should solve the issue. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Here's another eye test for you. Believe it or not, this image is not animated. Hay Merle; Is this non animated thing posta rotate clockwise or (as Greg G. says) anticlockwise? Looks like when I turn my head one way it spins in one direction. Turn my head the other way and the direction of rotation reverses. Is this another LDS (as James T. Kirk says) flashback:confused: Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Pretty wild, ain't it? Believe it or not that image doesn't move. It's all in you head/eyes. If you don't believe me, print it out on a piece of paper and look at it again. Quote
De Soto Frank Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 Fred, having a tailpipe all the way back will make a big difference... even on a pick-=up truck ! The floor in my De Soto is more of a theorectical concept than solid sheetmetal, and I noticed a big reduction in exhaust fumes in the cabin after replacing my entire exhaust system last month. If your engine is a bit tired, you might still have "exhaust" fumes wafting into the cabin from the "road draft tube" venting any blow-by from the crankcase... you will notice this on long hills...
