Cannuck Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 Hi ,wondering what is the proper torque on the lug bolts on my 48 dodge. Quote
Andydodge Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 Interesting question............I have the following workshop manuals, a Oz 36-42, an Oz 46-53, an Oz 54 Supplement, an Oz 1957 Chrysler Royal, an Oz 1961/62 Chrysler Royal, a US 1946-54 and a US 1957-1958 Plymouth Service Manual and none of them have anything about this EXCEPT the last, the 57-58 Plymouth Manual which in the Wheel & Tyre chapter at its start lists the torque for the 1/2 wheel bolts as 65 ft lbs Torque..........I would suggest that this is the standard figure for all mopars with this size 1/2" UNF bolt.........I've never used a torque wrench on wheel bolts, having always done them up TIGHT with a wheel brace, and actually have told tyre fitters that I want the nuts/bolts, whatever on my cars done up by hand not a rattle gun......pisses them off but its my money & I've always been pandered to .............lol...............regards, Andy Douglas 2 Quote
T120 Posted November 21, 2018 Report Posted November 21, 2018 (edited) My shop manual (WM-4184) lists 58.5 - 66.5 foot pounds for the wheel hub bolts for your 48 Dodge. Edited November 21, 2018 by T120 1 Quote
Cannuck Posted November 21, 2018 Author Report Posted November 21, 2018 Thank you , I have always just tightened till tight ,but thought i should be using a torque wrench . My manual was no help or maybe it was it said to make sure they were tight. Thanks again Quote
captden29 Posted November 22, 2018 Report Posted November 22, 2018 i make mine tight and then a small snug up. no tire shop ever touches mine as they will surely forget the left hand threads. dennis 1 Quote
Los_Control Posted November 22, 2018 Report Posted November 22, 2018 I wonder if anyone cared about torque on the wheels in the 50's, just get them tight. Was when modern cars came with disk brakes and thin rotors, "tight" would warp the rotors. And then we had to start using a torque wrench to not over tighten them. 1 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 22, 2018 Report Posted November 22, 2018 IF you are one that has upgraded to disc brakes, thick or thin, it is very important to torque the lug nut/bolts in sequence to prevent warping.....I tend to default 1/2 x 20 to 85 ft lb 1 Quote
