I was removing the thermo housing bolts from my 47' flathead, for which I thank all of you for your advice, and noticed this fissure or crack or superficial casting flaw just under the driver's side 593867aa830e1_1980-01-0100_01.02-2.jpg.25ddd3581f3334a675a5396ee9372249.jpgthermo housing bolt to the left of the front freeze plug.  Is my block history?  Can it be welded?

Is this a recent crack?  The car is 70 yrs old, if this crack was there from the factory you probably have nothing to worry about. I think that I would mark the end of it with a couple of punch marks, put it back together and see if it leaks.  If it does not leak, let it be.  Later you can check if it has grown by looking at th punch marks.

Actually, the engine is in the car and fully together.  I was in the process of flushing the cooling system before I tried to start it. The car was in pretty good condition when I bought seven years ago.  It started, and the mechanic I bought it from said he did a compression test, etc. and it was okay.  I haven't noticed this crack before, but then I wasn't looking.

Does not look like it has been leaking. If I understood your description this "crack" is on the head and not the block ? My guess is this is not an actual crack, but rather a casting mark perhaps ?

To my eye it looks like a superficial casting flaw.  Leave it alone and don't worry.  If it really bothers you a bit of JB weld would hide it from sight and prevent any leakage.

I agree with everyone else. It doesn't look like a crack to me.

Looks like a casting flaw that's all.

Agree with most others I think it's just an artifact leftover from casting, probably been there since the engine was new.

If it were indeed a crack there would be rust deposits surrounding the crack.

It is a wise manner to know if it is a crack or no.Good idea.
