Jeff Balazs Posted April 22, 2016 Report Posted April 22, 2016 Shouldn't that tiger be in your tank ? yes.....but then that would make Paul a Howlin Wolf fan......and he just doesn't seem the type. Quote
pflaming Posted April 23, 2016 Author Report Posted April 23, 2016 "Howlin' Wolf, was an African-American Chicago blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player..." I had to look him up, don't recall him performing in Ogallala, NE in the mid '50's, but then as a Mennonite kid, only the harmonica would have been OK. LOL Now a question: neither the kit instructions nor the Service Manual indicate a gasket sealer should be applied to the stacked parts of the carb, so I did not do so. Did I do it correctly? For an amateur, it's a "hard days night"! Quote
Niel Hoback Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 You did good. No need for sealer and you don't want flakes of stuff inside your carb. Quote
pflaming Posted April 24, 2016 Author Report Posted April 24, 2016 I do not like this air cleaner, too tall, maybe it's not the correct one, I thought it came off this engine, maybe not. I like the hubcap idea but hate to cut this down to make one. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 eeer..couple had bolts missing don't you think? Quote
pflaming Posted April 24, 2016 Author Report Posted April 24, 2016 Yes, on the head bolts. I haven't bolted anything down yet. Will put in the head gasket, all bolts, torque on Monday and tighten all other bolts, etc., as well. Then wiring followed by a hot wire setup and go for "launch". Are these air cleaners of any value? If not will cut the bottom out and make me a hub cap top, paper filter setup. Quote

pflaming Posted April 26, 2016 Author Report Posted April 26, 2016 Update: Will torque the head follow the next cup of coffee which is brewing now. ". . . . that ends well!" The end stud twisted which I removed the manifold so had to drill it out, hard to hit center and I didn't so . . . had to go in with a larger bit and a larger tap. But, no problem the mount holes are a bit over sized. Well I couldn't get one of the two long bolts to start, so removed all and found out one of those had been drilled out and tapped a larger size also. So tapped clean each hole and then remounted all. I snugged the center two bolts first, then the nuts with the centering washers, and then the remainder. I worked back of forth always only taking up the new slack until . . . . all is now tight. WHEW! thought I might have a major problem. Conclusion, a little patience can sometimes solve a lot of problems. Coffee is ready. 1 Quote
pflaming Posted April 27, 2016 Author Report Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) Update: just purchased a 1999 Cherokee, 3:55 complete rear axle with disc brakes for $250. That will put discs on all four corners and with the 3:55 will give it a very nice cruising speed essentially the same as 3rd and OD. Distributor is ready for install, water pump next, then details to ready it for start up tomorrow or Friday. Edit: I laid the engine on its side to clean and install the pan and there was the clutch staring me in the face! Be plain stupid/lazy not to remove it and check it, so punch marked the clutch and flywheel for installation. Wow, will it never end? Edited April 27, 2016 by pflaming Quote
pflaming Posted April 28, 2016 Author Report Posted April 28, 2016 I had forgotten how easy it is to check/ change the clutch plate. This plate should work out just fine. The depth of the remaining "fiber" is more than ample. Tomorrow the seal and the bottom pans. Quote
pflaming Posted April 28, 2016 Author Report Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) Checked yor oil strainer ladtely? About ready to install, I thought I'd open the top and take a look. Ouch, so glad I did! So many little things, details! But I'll get it done! Edited April 28, 2016 by pflaming 2 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 28, 2016 Report Posted April 28, 2016 its been two years since the fire..tell me that you can afford a table top... 1 Quote
pflaming Posted April 28, 2016 Author Report Posted April 28, 2016 Tim, I use that stand as a reminder to keep things clean!!! And I like the patina! The fact is that I had to spend a lot of money on fire prevention and cat deterrent food has gone out of the roof! Oil screen is clean and on, pan is on, distributor is on, water pump tomorrow. But for poor eyesight, new glasses come next week, a painful corn on the inside of my small toe, a knee that is now bone on bone, and STML, I may be able to go a little faster. Question: How wide can one go with rear rims on these 53 Plymouth suburbans? The wheel opening is low and the wheel well I think is narrower than a sedan or coupe. Got some measuring to do. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 29, 2016 Report Posted April 29, 2016 bad eyesight, corns, bone to bone grinding, memory loss....I figure that is just natural PATINA 1 Quote
pflaming Posted April 29, 2016 Author Report Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) Tim, you're possibly correct, but while there is patina on the surface, there's still some fire in the belly.(took some from the old garage). Pictures show where i am / was last night. Edited April 29, 2016 by pflaming Quote
pflaming Posted May 3, 2016 Author Report Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) I needed an alternator and a solenoid. I remembered my 87 parked Ford T Bird and . . . . Now to have them checked, get proper pulley, and make a mount. Suggestions welcomed. Response to Casper50 below: Yes, 6 volts works fine, but today's accessories demand such. Since I will rewire the vehicle, for me it's like front disc brakes, no brainers and if and when someone wants to go back original, nothing has been altered than cannot be reversed. pflaming Posted May 6, 2016 Author Report Posted May 6, 2016 Tim has a great 10 minute distribution tube removal video! I now have several hours in, I was not looking forward to this but it must be done. I know one thing, my slam hammer is no where near large enough. Hard strikes on that crow bar has a great deal of force. Now if I can hook into one of those top slots. Quote
