ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Hi all, I posted before about my 1950 panel, and you were all a huge help. I can find lots on the more usual half ton pick ups but this one is more tricky and Google isn't turning up much. Last night I picked up a 1946 1.5ton the model is a wh-48. I have it as just a cab chassis but I have no idea what it was before. This thing is quite the beast. Its got a 15,500lbs gvwr, It has about a 16' wheelbase.20" rims. Everything on it is massive and heavy. Very similar to the half ton that was parked next to it, just practically twice the size. It has 20 leaf leaf springs and the brakes look like they are from a big rig. Also has quite the horn set up in it. The serial number decoded to a 251 flathead. Not sure how many speeds on the trans yet. It will need a total restoration. Only rot is the floor and the headlight buckets. Basically my plans have been to find a good base to build a ramp style car hauler and put a cool 40s cab on it. Found various motorhomes and school buses and what not but then i found this and it will be perfect for what I need. I know it's a 6 volt positive ground system. Haven't been able to figure out a few things yet, like what's the small channel shaped piece on the center of the roof above the windshield. What are the holes where the sun visors would go. That kind of thing. I'll edit and ad some photos as i get them uploaded. Thank in advance for any tidbits of info you can give me Quote
ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 Sorry I'll have to do multiple posts. My phone isn't letting me copy and paste easily Quote

Young Ed Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Where are the holes you mention by the visors? If you have 3 holes in a triangle thats where a visor would go. If its in the covers for the wiper motor holes it would be the control for the wipers either vacuum or elec. The larger trucks seem to be more common for the optional elec wipers. Quote
ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 Oh thanks they are big holes (larger then my fist) with some old rubber tubing hanging out so I'm guessing I'm missing the covers you're talking about Quote
Young Ed Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Oh thanks they are big holes (larger then my fist) with some old rubber tubing hanging out so I'm guessing I'm missing the covers you're talking about Big rectangles? The wiper access panels are rectangles. If you've got round holes something is wrong. Quote
ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 They are rectangular. Looks like I'm just missing the covers. Came up with another question. How are the brakes on this size truck when they are properly rebuilt and serviced? Are there any modern big truck brakes that are easy to adapt to fit? Quote
Young Ed Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 That I don't know. I've heard the bigger trucks have great brakes but all I have are 1/2 ton pickups. Quote
ruff1148kr Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 going to be a great project the beast of the east Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 They are rectangular. Looks like I'm just missing the covers. Came up with another question. How are the brakes on this size truck when they are properly rebuilt and serviced? Are there any modern big truck brakes that are easy to adapt to fit? Your brakes when done right will be awesome! Your truck uses a Midland Hy-Power frame mounted brake booster . Makes all the difference for good brakes on the dodge medium weight trucks. The answer is yes.... the brakes will be excellent when rebuilt 100% . Quote
ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 Oh cool, so the big can that's got its halve sepearate with a rubber bladder hanging out is the brake booster. I figured as much but given the size of the can, almost tank like, I thought it actually might have been air brakes Quote
ngrybrd Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 Any good parts sources for trucks this big? Or maybe anything that you know is interchangeble with more readily available smaller truck parts. Don't need anything major as its pretty solid but all the consumables like the brake shoes or drums, cap and points or even recommend a good electronic points replacement like a pertronix or the like? Also, I know a beautiful show condition pilothouse can be worth a good penny to the right buyer. And I have no interest in selling it, I want to use it as a ramp truck and enjoy it. It's a good convenient way to bring two cars to a show at once. But I'm curious, does the size of this truck increase the value or hurt it. Is it worth more because its so much bigger and there's more there or is it worth less because its too big to be the usual go for a weekend drive in the old pick up truck kind of thing, so right there the market for it is a fraction. Of what the smaller truck have? Quote
Brent B3B Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 very nice! any interior photo's? Quote

59bisquik Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Grab the number off of the side of the distributor and head over to the Pertronix website. It will give you module and coil number needed for your distributor. Quote
