Suddenly No More Clutch - What did I do?

So, my clutch pedal has some sideways wiggle to it, and when I release it, it squeals loudly against the floorboard. I took a look underneath, and saw some space between the base of the pedal and the 'keeper' on the end of the shaft.  So I figured I'd just slip a thin washer in to take up that space and hopefully take some of the wiggle out of the clutch pedal.  So I undo the keeper (mindful of the adjusting screws) and slide in the washer along with some grease (was dry).  When I went to try the clutch, suddenly no pressure (only return spring).  So I put everything back the way it was (as far as I could tell), but still nothing.  What happened?  One thing that I notice though, is that there appears to be keyways on the shaft and keeper, but no key...maybe I lost it somehow and that keeps the pedal from turning the shaft (which I believe it's supposed to do, right?).  Thanks for any and all assistance!

Hi Ralph, you are correct you'll need that key. I believe they call it a "woodruff key "

You could type it in as an internet search to see what your looking for.

Thanks guys!  Will see what I can do here.  And I may find it lying on the ground under the truck.

After you find it or replace it, check that bushing in the illustration That might have something to do with some pedal slop :^)

Woodruff key is correct. Half moon key sounds more like the name of an island or a bar

I always just put a little wheelbearing grease on the side of the clutch pedal lever where it contacts the floor.  usually last for the driving season, and helps me forget about the worn bushings.  When it starts to protest again, a little dab of grease will do it....
