Any trick to getting rubber grommet for gas filler on

Have most on but it has a tiny lip for the inside that should go on the sheet metal lip and the part that is not on is furthest away from the sheet mental - it needs to be pushed further while simultaneously engaging the lip on the sheet metal - Thanks in advance!!

If you run a string around in the groove, cross the ends, then feed the ends of the string through the fender as you put the grommet over the pipe.

Then have someone press the grommet to the fender while you pull the string out from underneath.

Do it neatly & as you pull the string out, it'll flip that lip over the metal.

This method is similar to how you mount a windshield gasket to the car.

Rubber gaskets & grommets always go on easier when warm and wet. (Rubber also cuts far easier when wet, BTW.)

Disconnect the filler tube from the hose inside the fender area. Then remove the tube and install the grommet, use soapy water or your own spit and slide the tube back in and reconnect it to the hose.

The above suggestion sounds like the most simple solution.  Of course, the pipe will probably be a bit of a fight to loosen from the rubber joiner

piece........

Silicon lubricant spray also works wonders and stays put longer and is slicker than just soapy water.  Doesn't stain anything and cleans off easily.  I use Liquid Wrench.

I use Ru-glyde for rubber, but it's probably just 99% soap.   ;)

Taking the filler pipe off makes it much easier to install the grommet, but if the hose is old then you will probably have a leak at the filler to tank connection unless you clean it all up and  restore that rubber too.

This didn't work for my '40 because the filler tube has a small vent tube attached that won't fit through the grommet. I guess the newer cars don't have the vent.

The P15 pipe is thicker on the end because it forms the place for the gas cap to lock into.

It might go......but probably not.

Or maybe, go to a tire shop and ask for a small amount of the lube they use to put tires on?

Worse things happening than this (or perhaps flavored gasoline????)

Made block off plate for mechanical fuel pump did not find gasket so thought a good bead of silicone would do. It leaked! Ok no short

cuts gotta pull it off & re-do!! Well one of the bolts stiffened up on me half way out & broke off. Now I need to drill it out & helicoil. Not a favorite job of mine it may sit a week or two. This is what I get for messing with a runner! One step forward two back - anybody want a suburban project????
