So my plan is to instal a block heater in the lower radiator hose to help me with the cold starts! (Can be really cold in winter!) Anybody out there with experience with this? Quote

I just make sure my antifreeze is good enough remove a battery cable and walk away until spring. I don't think starting every 2 weeks gains you anything. Quote
Robert Horne Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 (edited) On my Plymouth, I charge the battery every month or so. Before winter, I run the fuel tank down low, so I can add a fresh gallon of fuel every month during the winter. Here in the USA, fuel does not do very well for long periods of time. I believe starting the car every couple of weeks is not any benefit, but I do run the car every couple of months to get fresh fuel through the system. Short run periods, not getting the car up to a full temperature can make the exhaust piping rust from the inside from the moisture not getting burned off. With days below freezing 6 months a year I disconnect the battery and forget. If all of your maintenance is up date it will be fine until Spring. First day of Spring 2014 Quote

But i have heard that the the thing in the carb with the leather casket (sorry i don't rember it's name!) Can dry out and and not seal probebly if i don't run the engine sometimes! The car will be in the garage for about 4-5 months! Quote

When poured into the tan of gas it then creates a vapor mist that also coats the to of your metal tank and helps prevent any rust from the water in the gas tank. Some one in one of the posts on this conversation stated that our US gas will last a long time. I have heard that the ethanol gas is only good for 3 months. So I guess we should at least run the car at lest once a month and check the brake system by pumping the brakes. I like to do this to insure that they keep moving the brake shoes and pistons. Just a tiny thing but works for me. For the guy in Sweden you might also want to put on a tricel charge to keep the battery fully charged up. The cold is not good for a battery. Hartung Desoto1939@aol I had to re read my earlier post on this conversation. I forgot to put the "not", in my statement that In USA, gas does not do very well for long periods of time. Recently I came across one of my 5 gallon gas tanks with a little fuel in it, that had been sitting for about a year. In the bottom of the tank was several lumps of what seemed to be sugar, and gummy fuel. Quote
captden29 Posted November 1, 2014 Report Posted November 1, 2014 I take the battery out and put it in my basement. it gets a charge every 3 to 4 weeks.the gas tankm is at least half full and gets stabil,chevron techron, heet, and always a little marvel mystery oil. of course I give the car a short ride before the lay up to get the treated gas into the carb,and I shut the car off, cover it and forget it. I guess you could fog it out if you wanted too. I never have and in the spring I just put the battery back in,start it and go after checking the tires and a few other things such as the fan belt. so far all that has kept the car healthy every year. capt den Quote

thrashingcows Posted November 7, 2014 Report Posted November 7, 2014 I ran one of those lower rad hose heaters for several years in my 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury, while I was driving it year round. Worked really well. If you are at all concerned with the motor freezing up, then maybe put in one of the lower rad hose heaters, then put it on a timer to come on for 2 hours every night, during the coldest part of the evening. I just recently brought home my 48 Desoto, which had been parked for over a year. I fired it up on the same gas I parked it with. I use Marine Sta-bil Fuel Stabilizer....some of the best stuff out there in my opinion. You can run it in every tank of fuel as well to help counter act the detrimental effects of the ethanol. Quote
