New readers must trust the advice given on this forum as I have and do. For the record, I bought two new good quality tires for the front of my truck, $260.00 for the pair. Geeez Paul, it appears that you caught me out. I've grown accustomed to seeing the jokes aimed towards you rather than from you! So you think it is a saggy leaf spring? Quote
MBF Posted April 13, 2015 Report Posted April 13, 2015 Years ago I had a flat on my work beater Nova. It needed new tires anyway, so I went to the local dealer to buy two new front tires. He only had one in my size after he replaced the one that hadn't gone flat. He put a smaller one on the other side since it was Saturday, and told me to come back Monday afternoon to have the matching tire mounted and balanced. That leaned and pulled so bad I didn't drive it all weekend, and was down there noontime on Monday to get the mate installed. That reminds me of another story. Had an AH Sprite that needed tires the day I graduated from high school. Took it to another dealer like a Sears type store. I was looking around the store when they paged me. IT seems that the Einstein assigned to my car twisted off 3 of the four lugs on one side, and one on the other side. Um-you didn't think it was a good idea to stop after the first one broke? It aint real easy to find lug bolts for a Healey on a Friday afternoon, but somehow I did, and made my graduation. Quote
pflaming Posted April 13, 2015 Author Report Posted April 13, 2015 MB, I had a 'perfect' 1966 Dodge half ton, Tires seemed ok, but couldn't keep it in the road after 45 MPH. I put a new set of four on and had a different truck. I hate to replace one tire due to what ever. Always perfer four some times for two. Truck decision was not based upon a life time of driving it, so two and two will work out OK. Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted April 13, 2015 Report Posted April 13, 2015 I see so you were just joking about the mismatched tires....One never knows..... . Have you had a close look at the springs? I am wondering if you have a broken leaf. Jeff Quote
pflaming Posted April 20, 2015 Author Report Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) 1. Leaf is fine. 2) I,m working at gas fume smell in the cab, while reading about gas evaporation , realized that the cowl air vent is an engine aroma vacuum. So a) tight "canvas" seal on the hood trailing edge next item 2) maybe small scoop in the center hood section or louvers in the side sections of the hood, 3) suggestions invited. I know the smell is old school aroma but so is BO and bad breath! Edited April 20, 2015 by pflaming Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Paul; Well you said the truck is sitting low on one side....so if it isn't the leaves then what? As far as the smell goes there are two things you may need to address. First the source of the smell. You should be able to idle this truck for 15 to 20 minutes and when you open the hood there should not be an excessive odor of gas. If there is then you need to find it and work towards eliminating it. Could be a number of things...fuel leak.....over rich mixture....exhaust leak.....weep at fuel pump or filters....incorrect state of tune...etc.I can have mine up to full operating temp and there is really no odor under the hood and just the faintest amount at the end of the exhaust......so that is what I would shoot for. The other area you can look at once you have eliminated the primary source of the gas smell is sealing up the firewall and floor boards. There are a lot of potential places fumes can enter the cab and they should all be looked at very carefully. These spots can also be a source of increased sound in the cab. I spent a lot of time on this and it makes a big difference if it is done well. Jeff Quote
pflaming Posted April 20, 2015 Author Report Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) My lean is 3/4", which may be normal, yet will readdress that when I'm back on the lift. TKS for the aroma check list. I have Roberts firewall panel and have sealed off all firewall holes from the engine side, but need to address the floor etc. Starts great, but still some electrical concerns, also drives great. So I'm gaining, I WILL get my truck back, the "Fire Cat" will NOT win the war. Goal: a cab that is quiet, nice aroma, with a quality seat, and the truck with an acceptable ride so that Mums will travel with me when I drive it to Indianapolis, otherwise I will go it alone and go via Elko GA. Jeff Balazs Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Paul; Like I said the fumes should not be too strong if everything is as it should be. When I first start mine I get a bit from using the choke...but that goes away very quickly. Otherwise it doesn't have much odor when running or after shut down......and that is the way it should be. Merle Coggins Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 Have ha looked at a map lately Paul? Elko ain't exactly "on your way" to Indy. Quote
pflaming Posted April 20, 2015 Author Report Posted April 20, 2015 Merle: Jerusalem is oft times not exactly "on your way" for those pilgrims either. It is very common for gurues and mystics to live out away from the mainstream! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 20, 2015 Report Posted April 20, 2015 I guess I should be glad he said mystic and not misfit...bring it on PP....Elko can handle the two of us I am certain... 1 Quote

I don't think so. If PP shows up then I predict Tim will have his hands full. Can't hardly imagine that conversation  Probably an automotive version of Who's on first? 1 Quote

TrampSteer Posted April 21, 2015 Report Posted April 21, 2015 I have Roberts firewall panel .. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of that would you? I'm thinking about doing the same. Quote
pflaming Posted April 25, 2015 Author Report Posted April 25, 2015 This could have been placed as a recourse to the comments in 3rd Annual" but I want these pics here. The finish on this truck is very unique. I have yet to have someone say I should paint it. I have even had three body shop owners say in effect, ". . . protect it in a proper way, but do not paint it. There is only one way to get that finish and no one will burn down their garage to achieve it." So enjoy or critique, I do not mind either way. I will this winter do a complete resand under the guidance of a good body man, disassemble the doghouse to clean and protect the seams and joints, clear coat the entire truck properly and finally buff that out. That is what it deserves and what it will get. To be continued . . . 1 Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted April 26, 2015 Report Posted April 26, 2015 clear coat is a paint....when you start with ugly with the objective being ugly..no one can see your shortcomings... 1 Quote

Your truck looked kinda cool prior to the fire, but not so much now. What exactly are you trying to accomplish, a pork& bean can in the fire look? You have a nice little truck there, why on earth do you want this "artsy fartsy folksy" metal burnt to $hit look. but your the owner, so you can do it anyway your heart desires. PS my bodywork and paint job is the $hits, so I am not looking down from cheque book pedestal at you, as my truck ain't so great either Edited April 26, 2015 by Fargos-Go-Far Quote
pflaming Posted April 26, 2015 Author Report Posted April 26, 2015 With this resonse to an "artsy, fartsy, folksy" look, I entertain this conversation close. My brother has two 2014, 120,000.00 Porches. When we go to lunch, no one ever says to him, " nice car" but I am constantly talking to someone about my truck because they LIKE the 'look'! I take no offense either way because I've found a very enjoyable retirement hobby and a few grumpy, but fun friends. Today I'm going to buy a journal and enter into it summaries of ensuing conversations. I would suggest others should consider the same. Sometimes I like Rockwell, sometimes I like Piccaso, sometimes I listen to Willie Nelson, sometimes I listen to the Irish Tenors. Both sell a lot of CD's. The highways are wide and long which suits me fine. 4 Quote
