1947 Dodge Custom Club Coupe Project

Recommended Posts

So, I guess I should finally post some photos.  My sister and I purchased a 1947 Club Coupe from my uncle.  It has been in the family since it was two years old.  We wanted to keep everybody in the family and our friends in the loop, so we created a blog.

Neither of us have ever tackled a project like this, but I can tell you one thing, it is a lot of fun, and a little bit frustrating.

I also don't know what the end result of this car will be.  I want to keep it pretty authentic(even though it already has a p24 engine and trans from a 53 Plymouth, so I guess it is already a little modified) and we are going to gut the interior, as rats and age have taken their course.

So, you can expect a lot of questions from me in the upcoming months and or years :)

That's excellent!  Keep us posted and fire away with questions.  Posting here helps us stoneage types, who don't know "blog", stay in touch

You have a wonderful car to start with. Looks like a barn find. Better than mine which sat in the desert for 25 years. You'll be happy with it. Welcome.

Well.  I have the car street legal.

I am trying to do one thing at a time, first it was get the engine running, which I did, then I got the brakes operational, which was awesome.

Now I'm just working out the little kinks.  Got my exterior lighting mostly functional(really only one parking light doesn't light up.)

Took it for a reasonable neighborhood drive and I started losing power, and finally it stalled.  Decided it was either out of gas or I had a clog in the line somewhere.  Put my spare 1 gallon in and barely made it back home.  Still not exactly sure what that was all about, so I haven't been adventurous enough to take it on another long car drive.

Starting to think a AAA membership is in order for me soon.  Or at least the 24/7 phone number for a good tow truck.

I just paid for my 47 Dodge 3 window today.  Have to have it shipped to Alaska so it will be awhile before I get it.  I've seen your youtube vids

Congrats on getting the car street legal, and congrats to you, Casper, on the purchase. Good luck to you both.

DAMN,but that is a solid-looking old car! You just can't beat buying a car with faded original paint and some surface rust. That way you know there won't be any ugly surprises popping up when you get ready to paint it.

I love sLoPaR stuff, but the brakes can go to hell. I know how to fix them and I can make them work. Go to old daddy and get a disc conversion for the front at least. As for me,"I will fight no more forever".

My family has history in the pacific northwest. Always been fascinated with the Nez Perce people. Great Grandparents homesteaded in that region. There is a movie about that event.

Zephyr---have you cleaned out the gas tank and replaced any inline fuel filter?

If no inline filter, you might want to add one.    Is your fuel pump in good order and clean inside?

You could make some type of temporary small gas tank for short test drives.

I never did clean out the gas tank...  shame on me.  the fuel pump is in good working order and there is now a fuel filter in line, as i kept finding crud EVERYWHERE... shame on me again.

Hey, at least I'm having fun.

Sister and I are tracking down a replacement tank as we speak.  And if I keep it half full, it doesn't leak at all :P

You cannot get a better paint job than what is on that car. Clean it up and enjoy. One should not paint over a Picasso.

If you put nice paint on it, you won't be inclined to put your coffee or beer on the cowl when needing both hands to open the hood

pflaming that would be a matter of opinion. lol   It wouldn't be mine.  Black or very dark maroon is in it's future.

Oooh, I like the maroon idea. Black cars are everywhere.

Though that *would* be a good candidate for driving with the old-fashioned patina.

IMO...the larger the car and less trim attached, the body lines, curves and other detailed features are lost in the darker paints...dark colors require these appointments to break up the body and defines these build line and characteristics
