Has anyone ever put a big block in a 47 Plymouth?

'Tho I've not done it, a really big issue is the steering column and box interference. That's even an issue when installing a small block.

Yes we have a member who drops in occasionally with a 440 in his p15 2dr sedan.

please pay strict attention to the arrangement of the cross ram and position of the carbs even without the consideration of air cleaners...now look at the the attached picture..this is just a late model Dodge 3.7 V6 installed in a P15 and yes the engine is against the firewall in the rear and the radiator is forward mounted of the shell...in regard to air cleaner..there was no room at all to mount the small snorker without going 90 degrees reward..so there are many limitations..the ABS brake controller/lines plus the wirness also had to be relocated just for the benefit of sitting the engine..and with the frame clip there was no concern for steering in this mix..

while I will not say it cannot be done..it really can be I am sure but with major surgery to all panels and such...you are most restricted by the way the nose tapers inward at the front..these are just the limitiations of the basic doghouse I am speakling..firewall and frame will have their own mods....my picture does not show the inner fenders after they were modified to support this install..but they do fit nicely...

the cross ram is the main problem and if it is the short rams it may not pose a real problem...odds are the installed height will put the carbs right on the hood/fender cut line...(my big block in the 41 Dodge Bz Cp has the carb just at this level and its centered so no biggy) other than the intakes/carb relationship to the hood opening and inner fenders its just another big block and the big block is only a tad larger than the mopar small block except for the width of the valve covers outside to outside..the small block is actually a 1/2 longer than the big block (water pump style) the big block is 1/2 taller sump to carb top than the small block but as stated, the big block is 4.5 wider at the top of the valve covers outside to outside..so again as stated many times..it is not so much the outer physical dimensions...CI is bore x stroke....physical relationship of the piston to centerline etc etc..so to the question at hand..again look close at your bay..see the taper...measure your distance between the carbs on the cross rams..I do not have a set up at hand to do this measurement for you..this is the only limiter in the install....

picture is big block in 41 Dodge and the Dodge is a larger car under the hood....

Okay, today the wind changed direction and plans are out the window, looks like the coupe will go behind the house for now unless i decide to sell it, I have had to many sellers remorse experiences to last a lifetime and i just don't want to keep making the same mistakes, so for now it's on the back burner. The Chrysler 300J will be yard art for a while, as Tim said with only 400 made a 1/4 of those still in existance, I would be an even bigger fool to seperate the drivetrain from the body, so today............. I commited to buying the car I have been looking for since I let the last one get away, and it's even the same color, although mine was a Phoenix and this one is a Pioneer, it's a way better car than the one I had, and bonus points for the new interior, sound system, paint, and a complete 1961 Chrysler 413 drivetrain. I appreciate all the input on the BB in the coupe and as Tim told me, the 318 auto and rearend already in the coupe is great for a steet crusier and since it's running and complete, don't mess with it and have to redo everything again.

Here's a couple of pics of My new ride, 1961 Dodge Pioneer 2 door hardtop with the "sky window in the rear. ain't she purdy ?

I likes that machine, would I ever like to light up those tires, nice color and all too, you done good on this acquisition.

In the winter of 1978, drove a 61 Phoenix out to Grandparents country home for Uncle, car ran great 318 auto, sadly it sat there until 2007, then someone bought it before it rusted away, not sure what it's fate was....

Is this more along the lines of what you are thinking about? This is has lower production numbers that the 300J...in fact this may be the only known true long ram Dodge Polara around. Chrysler big wigs came out in the early 80's to verify it existed. He has owned it since 1964.

Thanks for all the input, the deal is done on 61 Pioneer, maybe i can just "borrow" the short rams off the 300 for a while, for the 61 I'm thinking dual swept antennas for the rear, some skirtz, and maybe, just maybe, some lakes pipes, the hubcaps will give way to some 4 bar flippers for the front. By the way, I just bought a great looking grill for the 47, rear tail light bezels for the blue dots I have, parking light housings for the front, new head light trim rings, so that'll keep me busy for a while. I kinda gave up on the coupe, at night i would start thinking, damm i gotta do something with that car out there, maybe i need to get rid of it and move on, then i would go out and walk the dogs and look back at the coupe patiently sitting there and the profile would get me every time, she is a great looking old girl, and it ain't like I'm married to it, after all, it don't B##ch, don't eat, it quietly welcomes me home, don't get an attitude and leak oil every month, don't even know what a diamond is, and best of all, she don't have no relatives, think I'll keep her.

Thanks all

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE women, just haven't found the right one, and believe me i have looked under every stone, come to think about it, that's where i met most of them, but I always get stuck with the smokin' Rambler with the rod knocking and the slipping trans instead of the 60 Plymouth with the BIG "fins" the motor that can really "rev" and the great "tailpipes". oh well at 66, i still have plenty of time, right?, uh, right?, hello out there, right?
