Now that the season is shuting down I wanted to start getting parts for my plymouth. I am sending my running boards down to georgia and I am getting that steering box rebuilt. The guy doing the work wants to line up all the parts. I actually have bushings that go in the box however He wants to replace the "worm gear" i think that's the stem. If I am not wrong tht's the long rod that the steering wheel is conected to right? does anyone have one of these or a good steering box for a 1940 plymouth. I looked at hershey and it might have been there but I missed it:rolleyes:

Yup, that's the critter and they can wear in ways that aren't always obvious so if your rebuilder wants to replace it that's a good sign.

From the "more information than you need" department comes a piece of trivia about worm gears. The were the original pump, created by one of the ancient Grecians (Archimedes?) to move water up hill. They're still used today for moving concrete and other stubborn stuff.

I have a steering box with the steering shaft still attached from a 1941 Plymouth.

If you can get the casting #'s from yours we can see if it will work.

Mitchell Motor Parts (MMPAR.com) may be a good source. They seem to have a lot of inventory and were quite helpful in my case. They're no prouder of their inventory than anyone else nowadays. I was looking for a NOS steering shaft w/worm gear and sector shaft (48 D24), and they were the only ones that had them.

I have a box from a 41 that has had the shaft cut off. You'd just have to get someone to butt weld it to your shaft.

From my experience and if I recall correctly '40 boxes are a one year only run, '39 and '41I are different. I found one on ebay for my '40, the last resort I've heard about is to have the worm chrome plated to build it up.

Rodney, according to my MOPAR parts book the steering gear shaft and roller tooth assembly are the same for 1939, 1940, and 1941 Plymouths (part# 676930). The steering gear tube and worm assembly are the same for 1940 and 1941 (part# 857479) but different for 1939. The difference is likely because the length of the shaft is different for '39. Doesn't really matter as the worm is a pressed fit onto the shaft anyway. Always better to get new as opposed to worn, chipped, or tired used ones. There is a place in the links I believe that rebuilds steering boxes so I would check that out or do a search for threads about it.

Thanks for the info on the steering boxes, now that the Rockville show is over I am going to check the number on the box. If the steering box one of our members is sending me checks out I am going to get his, i have to check my and his number.

On the running boards I have founs a guy in Georgia that does them he gave me a rice of 650.00 if the running board is in good condition I will remove the rubber before sending it. He has some examples on line of work done.
