B1B Keven Posted November 15, 2011 Report Posted November 15, 2011 Very nice work. Wow!!! Great job Kevin. Makes me wish that we had them in our trucks here in Oz.Desotodav Wow!Hank Thanks guys, just a couple of coats of paint. At least people can get an idea of what it could look like. Quote
95ttoplt1 Posted November 15, 2011 Report Posted November 15, 2011 so I stopped at NAPA and got "the look" from my girl there when I walked in...she just LOVES it when I come in for odd stuff! They have a NON high temp paint that is close I think: "Dark Garnet Red Met". This is a metallic paint, but the larger question is if this paint would hold up to the temps?Plan on calling the LARGER NAPA in St Paul today off a recommendation and talking to the guy there that can match paints and put them in spray cans to see what he says. If I get a color formula, I'll share it here. HAHA, I get the same look when I walk into O'reillys, they all know me by name and just go grab the "books" in the back now LOL BTW my little girl(9) and I were cleaning up head bolt holes and playing name that part, and we got to discussing the heater, and where the hoses were ect. When I said "its that little black box under the dash", she quickly corrected me in that it was actually a dark brown/kinda purple color. I guess she really does pay attention! Quote
John-T-53 Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 (edited) Pics of the model 61 Heater. This is the Rust-Oleum Black Hammered paint. I used the model 65's defroster outlet instead because the 61's door control bracket was broke (pot metal). This previously had original paint and the circle wasn't painted silver. The 61 is incorrect for my year truck, but I opted for this because it has doors on all the outlet grills, thus allowing them to be closed for maximum defroster output. They are prone to denting and bending by carless passenger feet, tho... Just did the first test run where the defroster was essential...230 miles from here to San Simeon last Friday night in the rain. For the first time driving in the rain, I could actually see. ggdad1951 Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 man you guys! I hope to have my show and tell ready in early Dec, at least the parts, as I want to have the motor have new, non crunchy wires. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Are you having the motor rebuilt somewhere? Or did you order a new one? Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Are you having the motor rebuilt somewhere? Or did you order a new one? I have a guy who knows a guy who rebuilds old motors. These seem to in good shape, just fragile wiring. You got a source for a replacement? I might get a length of wire from RIWire so it is "correct". Won't stop me from the resto of the heater boxes I have going tho (model 65 for me and a 62 for a lucky person YTBD). Quote
Young Ed Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 You got a source for a replacement? QUOTE]I've seen a few places with brand new 6v heater motors. They are probably pretty interchangable but the places are ford/chevy types. Some comparison work would be in order for sure. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 I don't think it related to the upholstery. Here's what I've seen: Model 61: Dark Grey Model 62: Dark Maroon ?? Model 65: Dark Maroon/Silver Model 504: ? well heard back from the NAPA color match guy, he is thinking the color is more a dark red/brown vs. a dark maroon from polishing a vent door area (Model 62). Thoughts? Quote
John-T-53 Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 Descriptions of colors are always very subjective, and may mean different things to different people depending on what mood they're in....but I agree, this is probably a better description than "Maroon". But more importantly, it's being matched from the original paint which will get you the best results. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 (edited) Just drove up to NAPA in St Paul and he gave me the bad news he wasn't ready with the paint for the Model 62. He "had" it under the fluorescent lights, but didn't look right under the high beams. Turns out that there is a slight metallic to the paint. So I should be set tomorrow. I also brought along a printout of the picture of the Model 65. He's gonna try and match it as close as he can off the picture. My guess is the Model 62 is this dark/reddish metallic and the Model 65 is the maroonish with some slight metallic (all based on the picture of a "decent" Model 65 I printed out from somewhere on the forum). All said and done, he's gonna give me the recipes for the paint for you all to share. Edited November 29, 2011 by ggdad1951 Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Alrighty, got my cans of paint from color matching. Here are the recipes for the color match he did to the Model 62 and 65 heaters. I'll post pictures after I have all the parts painted. If these are voted "proper" maybe they can put in the "knowledge" section. Dave72dt Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 You're doing such a nice job on the heater, I'm not sure why you didn't tackle the whole truck. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 You're doing such a nice job on the heater, I'm not sure why you didn't tackle the whole truck. because it doesn't fit in my basement, and isn't out of a rattle can! Quote
Dave72dt Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Napa must have put your mixes in a Preval sprayer. CF214 must be the binder in the mixes? Quote
ggdad1951 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Napa must have put your mixes in a Preval sprayer. CF214 must be the binder in the mixes? yah in some spray rattle cans for me...I don't have a sprayer I'd want to run paint thru, especially in the basement, the rattle can w/ the exhaust fan running is bad enough! No idea what any of the codes mean, I just asked for the recipe to share. Got 2 coats onthe Model 65 over lunch, the maroon isn't as forgiving, so it'll be another coat or two to even it out. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) my progress on the Model 65...not as nice as I'd like but I'm pretty happy considering how pitted it was. Edited January 11, 2012 by ggdad1951 Quote
Rocket-bob Posted December 3, 2011 Report Posted December 3, 2011 That heater came out looking great! I have a round shaped "Allstate" heater in my truck with a heat and defrost setting. I've thought about finding a Mopar heater to replace it but kind of like the period heater (I've been told it was sold through the Sears catalog). My only problem is that I don't have any of the ducting that connects the heater to the windshield vents. Has anyone found a good source for those? Quote

ggdad1951 Posted December 3, 2011 Report Posted December 3, 2011 (edited) Wow, that came out nice! thanks, been a bit if a stressor the badge was really bad. The area around the "Model 65" isn't as nice as I'd like, but it was pretty pitted and rusty so I tried to build it up, and very hard to get looking good w/o taking meal off the lettering. I've thought about it and have a plan to help that area. This is the heater (once done) I'm selling. I'll post better pictures once it's all assembled and the motor is rebuilt.
