Mr Duck 48 Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 (edited) Don J here from the High Desert of So Cal, and I've just landed my new project- a 48 Plymouth 2 door Deluxe Not quite a barn find, more like a back yard find. This car ran when the owners parked it, drove it in the back and shut it off, and there it sat for a lot of years. I was asked to "just come get this thing outta my yard, and you can have it!" Yep, a freebie car! The body is in great shape, and I plan on leaving that un-molested for now, but the interior has that old car funk smell bad, and all the rubber seals have dried out and crumble to the touch. I got the ignition switch out yesterday and had a key made-originals long lost-but I need to take the door panel off to get the door lock out and a key made. So how does one get the door and window handle off? Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 (edited) The door panel doesn't have to come off to pull the lock cyl, it's held in by a set screw which is accessed though a hole under the door seal. If you want to pull the door handle and window crank off they are held in by a pin, you have to push the trim bezel in to reveal the retaining pin then drive the pin out with a small pin punch or a finish nail will work in a pinch. BUT after lots of in and out with a twist, managed to break the cheap aluminum key off in the trunk lock....CRAP!!! So now whatta I do? And thanks guys for lookin' Don J Quote

So now whatta I do? And thanks guys for lookin' Don J Go back in time and get copies made? Seriously see if you can pull the broken piece off. There might be enough left to make a copy. For future reference the original configuration is ignition and door, trunk, glove box. The truck does use the same blank which is why yours fit. You can have them keyed the same to only have 2 keys. james curl Posted June 26, 2012 Report Posted June 26, 2012 A good lock smith has a couple of tools that he slides down beside the key to grab the stub and remove it. My daughter and I once owned an Isuzu Stylus that had such a deep cut in the key that if you hit a bump to hard and had too many keys on the ring it would snap the key off. My local lock smith got real good at removing the stub from every lock in the car over a 10 year period. Quote
