The ad says that its in running condition, but you should ask the seller if it has any leaks if so how bad, does it pour white smoke while running, indicating bad rings. Ask if hes rebuilt it or had someone else do it, if so how long ago. A general question would be " Whats the reason for selling it?" I don't have a feel for how much a motor like that goes for so i don't know if the $300 is to much.

I'd buy it. :) Ask the normal questions:

Does it smoke?

Make noise?

Leak?

Why are you selling it?

Has it been rebuilt?

Then negotiate.

I got this response from the seller:

"I bought this engine from a person in Novato. I bought it because I had sent the engine out of my 1947 Plymouth Coupe to get rebuilt. I didn’t hear from the guy in such a long time, I figured I would use this one. Well they guy finally called and said my engine is done so I don’t need this one anymore."

so, I'm guessing that the seller doesn't know how the engine runs.

Looks like I'll be rolling the dice on this one

I think I'd be a little leary of this one if its truly missing the oil pump. Typically there is no reason to remove it unless something was going on.

If he can't get it running for you...he shouold at least pull the head, oil pan, and valve covers so a guy can get a better look. Not a huge task for a 300 dollar sale IMO.
