The high beam indicator itself holds it in. The part the bulb goes into unscrews. Its also the upper attachment point for the instrument cluster.

as Ed says, the high beam indicator housing is the upper mount for the instrument cluster..the base that the lamp plugs into is actually a cylinder nut that threads to the indicator housing..look careful for the thin metal tab that is part of the cluster that the housing passes through..

Thank you gentleman. Didn't have cluster in but now I understand. I pushed the little red plastic piece out to the rear and cleaned and polished it so it should be good as new.

Does anyone have a pictorial display of the 89-39-3 indicator assembly.  I found the diagram in the parts manual, but I still don't see how it's held into the dash.

It's all intact and works properly, but the red diffuser is missing, and the bulb shines right in your eye when driving.  I'd like to replace the red diffuser, if I knew what it looked like,  and where to find one, or see what it looks like so that I could fabricate it.  (Is it red?  green?)

The bulb holder screws onto it from the inside of the dash.  I have an extra one if you dont have it.

Didnt know it had a diffuser. Ill have to check on this as mine doesnt have it in there.

Here's one that's on ebay.

The bulb socket that keeps it held to the dash is missing in that pic, as is the bracket to hold the turn signal bulbs.

See:

Also.  P15 and D24 are different as far as the part that shows is concerned. Angled differently to fit dash.

I had one with a missing diffuser. Used a bit of red glass bead in the hole.

The High Beam indicator inserts through the dash as is obvious.  On my 42 Dodge there was a bracket on top of the speedometer that the indicator inserted through and then the bulb holder screwed on to the high beam indicator pinching the bracket in between.  The cars that had turn signals had an additional bracket that supported the right and left bulbs as well as the high beam indicator.  The bulb just snapps into the holder housing.  A picture of a bulb housing that screws onto the indicator is below.

Old(or new) red plastic toothbrush handles are a good source for clear red plastic..........model builders have used them for custom made taillights for years........andyd

Good information boys!  Thanks.  As soon as my cracked rib heals up from getting under the dash to put the heater back in, I'll go in again, to get that high beam indicator out.  I like the red toothbrush idea as a source of red plastic.  I don't have any legos!

Sounds like I'm not the only one missing the red lens.  Wonder why so many are missing?  Maybe 68 years has something to do with it!

I used a "Swizzel" stick. You old party guy's remember those. I also drilled 2 holes one on each side of the hole of the indicator and installed a small green led bulb for my turn signals sorta like the impossible to find originals. Just a thought..... :P  :D

Yes.......the Dodge item with indicator arrows and three bulbs is an entirely different animal.

(It should work in a Plymouth assuming all parts are present and it is hooked up correctly.)

Did any of the P15s have the turn signal indicator?
