B1B Keven Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 so on to my next set of questions. what radiators are compatible with the ton and half trucks, and where is the best place to get the rubber for the windshield and back glass? Radiator part # 1272 802 Radiator interchange: B3F, G, H, GM and HM. Rubber: http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/truck_parts.asp Quote
Todd B Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 If I remember right roberts windshield rubber comes in a roll and you need to cut to fit. I think Steele Rubber products comes all formed with the center bar rubber in it. I was actually looking this up last night and was going to call Monday to verify. Todd B Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 why thank you for naming her:D, and giving me all the great info. where do you go to look up all that stuff? I use the factory parts and Data /sales books for information- a must if you are really into the MoPar trucks or cars. Also over the years I have parted out/ worked on and owned just about every model (B,D,H,J,R,V ect) of Dodge truck except for the "VX" twin screw model. Bob Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 What is a twin screw model??? The "twin screw" is slang for tandem (2) rear drive axles. Quote
Todd B Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I never heard that before. Thank you, I had a chance to buy a pilot-house dump truck a few years ago with tandems but the guy wanted way to much. It also had dual carbs and if I remember right it not only had 2 speed rear end it also had a split tranmission. I remember everything was way bigger then my JA semi tractor. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 (edited) Was it the big Moly Block six with twin carbs? Edited March 5, 2012 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
Todd B Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 All I remember is that it looked like a flat head but much larger. I might try to find it again this spring when biking season starts. It was about 70 miles from my shop and the guy left a note on my semi when I was out one night. We went to look at it and there was trees growing in the box and he wanted I believe $1500. The most I ever paid for a pilot house was $500 and I felt I would never find the time to restore. Now if it was a COE it would be in my shed. One of the top 10 on my bucket list is to own a COE, preferably a semi tractor. Quote
Todd B Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 DodgeB4YA! I just looked at your profile, VERY impressive collection of tooling. Todd B Quote
tonkaman Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 well radiator is out and ready for my redneck repair skills, had to drop the fuel tank today as the pickup tube was plugged soild, after a little searching of the site i found a thread explaining how to use a cable to rotor root the tube out. so now its nice and clean and pumping its own gas instead of running off my gaterade bottle IV. but the sending unit it froze up solid, can i get one of those down at the parts house? Rubber: http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/truck_parts.asp umm, ok so im guessing the diferent letters represent different GVW ratings. we jerked the radiator tonihgt and carefully removed the fins around the bullet hole then pinched the one tube shut and soldered the ends closed. dosnt leak on the bench but well see when i get it back in mater. anyway thanks for the links i cant wait for this summer when i get to start fixing up the necessitys so i can begin to use him. i did take him for a spin around the yard real quick and even caught second gear!! hahaha i had to drop the tank this afternoon cause the pickup tube was pluged solid so after fight ing with that for a few hours hes now pumping his own fuel. i still cant belive how well it starts up and runns so well for being a junkyard truck. so where do i get a new fuel sending unit? would napa be able to help me there? Yep you're right about the letters. Roberts also sell new sending units. I've got one in my truck. There are a few threads here on how to modify one from JC Whitney (search 'sending unit'). Remember, use only a 0 or 4 pound radiator cap. Anything more will cause more leaks (don't ask how I know this ). Quote
MBF Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 Tonkaman that's great news that she runs. Do yourself a favor and get the single piece windshield rubber from Steele. Mike Quote
tonkaman Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 ok sweet deal ill have to look into the sending unit and my radiator cap as i think its the original and i have no idea on the PSI its good for. oh and ive decided because of the color and the look it has going his name is Mater. "Ya Know like ta-mater, only without the ta" hahaha:D Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 (in part) his name is Mater. "Ya Know like ta-mater, only without the ta" hahaha:D really original.. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) So, when you repaint him are you gonna put 'im in Materhosen? Merle Edited March 5, 2012 by Merle Coggins Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 'Mater always struck me as being of late '50s, early '60s GM origin. Maybe you have a 'Tater instead of a 'Mater. Quote
