I was looking on e-bay today and saw a Chrysler Windsor Traveler. It did not have a rack on top and the owner claimed that it never did. It was also stated that there were very few made like that (less that 15). I have a Windsor Highlander and know that the plaid interior is the main trim difference that makes it different from other Windsors along with other upscale options, but what options makes a Traveler?

The Windsor 6 cylinder Travelers had an imitation alligator upholstry in them. I have seen several on E bay and Craigslist over the years. They all had chrome and wood roof racks with wood slats as on the T&C 4 door sedans. The ones I have seen all had the roof rack.

No production figures as they were mixed in with Windsor 4 door production. All this info is from "70 years of Chrysler".

Some of the Traveler features are the two-tone paint (sometimes tan on top, sometimes brown, but (almost) always those two colors), the two-color "leatherette" upholstery, a footstool of sorts that slipped under the brackets you can see on the rear door sills of the one on ebay (the purpose was to ease loading on the rack that is missing on this one), and several Traveler badges (fenders and middle of lower dash), and the ivory-colored plastic interior trim pieces. I think the fold-down arm rest is also unique to the Traveler. I've never heard of one without a roof-rack. I don't think the paint is original either as the tan on the front fenders and the transition between the brown and tan does not look correct. I think it is a Traveler that has been repainted and lost its rack along the way somewhere.

4,182 were made between 1946 and 1948 and there are far more than three registered by owners other than Chrysler. I just sold one to a guy that had one already and corresponded regularly with several other owners, plus saw them pop up for sale occasionally around the country. The seller does state that he found his information on the web and could not vouch for it.

I attached a nice story about a guy in California with one, along with a picture of it.

An item I found on the net showed the below pic of a 1950 model.....here

is what the poster said...........

Greetings, this chrysler is a 1950 4 door sedan, looks like a Windsor, however, the lettering on the trunk lid says "Traveler". Windsor is nowhere on the car. The rear seat folds completely forward, for luggage or sleeping?? Anybody have any info on this Traveler or know of a website that does? Thanks from L.A., George

And another person replied........"70 Years of Chrysler" by Geo. Dammann describes for 1950, a "Windsor Traveler sedan, which was an attempt to combine station wagon utitity with sedan styling". Supposedly they all came with a roof-top luggage rack. 900 were

A third said.........The car in the photo is not a '50 Chrysler. Looks like a '51, '52 or '53.

The car is definitely a 1951 or 1952 Windsor (the taillamps are the only change from 51 to 52). A Traveler was a 1950 only model.

I believe, however, that the trunk lids from 1949/50 bodies interchange with 1951/52 bodies. Rear styling was not substantially changed in the 1951 restyle. Your trunk lid was probably replaced with this (very rare) 1950 Traveler lid at some time. __________________

Also on the bay is a French postcard for this 46-48 Traveler.....with no

roof rack but what appears to be a fabric or leather roof insert.........

Seller says: This is a 1948 Chrysler Windsor Traveler in amazingly good original condition. This car has little if any rusted through body metal. As far as we can tell the paint is original with the exception of the passenger rear fender, which has been replaced, and does not match the rest of the car. The interior appears to be all original other than the faces of the front seat back and bottom. We learned many things about this car by doing a google search. We found several articles written about a car that is very similar to ours, with a lot of information about the rarity and uniqueness of the 1947 and 1948 Travelers. More than one of the articles we found claims there are only 12 of these cars registered with 9 of them belonging to Chrysler. We can’t verify the accuracy of what we have read, but suggest you google 1948 Chrysler Traveler yourself and form your own opinion. From what we have read it sounds like the roof mounted luggage rack was available on these cars, but not necessarily installed on all of them. There is no sign of one ever being installed on this car. This is a great car needing very little to be a dependable driver. The flathead 6 cylinder starts easy and runs very smooth and quiet. The fluid drive transmission is smooth and operates like it should. The lights, heater, wipers are all in working condition. We do have the original hubcaps, but no beauty rings. The hubcaps pictured are not correct for the car. Please call or email with any questions.

There is a code for the rack on a tag on the firewall. If you are interested in buying this car, send me a PM and I will look in my file to see what the code was on the one I had.

On the firewall Data plate a Code 2 is for the Traveler luggage rack . This code # will be found under column "LU". A "1" means luggage rack is required.

Interesting note re the chart. It lists the 4 door wagon under Windsor 6. Mine is a Windsor Deluxe T & C. I believe the wagons had an optional mattress and window bug screens. Perhaps the traveller did as well?

I believe the traveler or is it travel all, have the folding seats, that configure to give you a flat wood faced load surface that also provides an opening where the trunk bulkhead is in the regular sedans.  I had some pictures of one taken about 15 years ago but that was several computers ago and they are gone.

Kaiser had a similar vehicle in the late 40s early 50s, but it went a bit farther using a hatch back style tailgate rather than a trunk lid.
