Anybody know what brands of window coolers there were? Like Unity lights and Fulton visors? I'm looking for one like in the attached picture. So having a manufacturer name would be helpful. And were they called "window coolers?"

That's probably the correct name for them, but they were generally referred

to as "swamp coolers" as they use water inside, which is soaked up by some

straw type material, then the wind blows across it to "cool" the car.

Like those big window coolers for a house.....also referred to as the same

name.

There were several brands made in the day. They appear on ebay along.

I think mine went airborne with the tornado and failed to return home.

It was in my large storage shed which disintegrated.

Doc,

Do a search for "swamp coolers" and you'll find about a dozen posts describing everything about them. I'd love to have one for Pigiron too but they aren't cheap.

Good luck!

"Thermador" is one for sure. There are several companies manufacturing new ones. Search "evaporative car cooler", or as suggested "car swamp cooler", there are several for sale right now. Good vintage ones are hard to find in decent condition, since they only work with water they tend to corrode quite a bit, just something to watch out for. They work great in the southwest where its dry, but you have to carry lots of water with you, because the drier it is, the more frequently you have to refill them, but the drier it is the better they work. They work "OK" where its humid, they get progressively less efficient the more humid it gets, and you'll have that dank clammy feeling inside the car, and everything will be damp - which I personally don't like - but to each their own. They sure look cool (sorry), too!

I guess each is to his own on the looking cool..I personally think they appear to be large bulky and unattractive..only thing they add to the car is a snippet of nostalgia..I would prefer a JATO strapped onto my car before one of these..or maybe a SAM..

I agree Tim. I prefer a more streamlined look. No sunvisor no spotlights etc. I took the drivers side spot off my car early on and sold it. Thats ok we'll just leave more of them on the market for others.

In the San Joaquin Valley it is dry as a bone in the summer. So having some humidity might be a relief. This past weekend driving through the valley I got ENDLESS complaining from my girls about the heat. It's for them; not me.

Tim,

I already have two SAMs neatly tucked under the fat fenders. Them come in handy for annoying drivers...

"Thermador" is the one I see out there the most.
"Cool-O-Matic" made them in bullet shape and cylinder shaped ones.
"Firestone" ones were made by thermador and the few ones i've seen have had a square-half-circle shape or standard thermador shape.
"AllState" swamp coolers by thermador are also out there.

I am by no means an expert, i'm just pitching in my 2 cents on the ones i've taken pictures of.
I have a Cool-O-Matic.
