Jim Yergin Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Yesterday I drove to George Asche's place in Pennsylvania to drop off my overdrive transmission. George is going to go through it to see why I cannot get it to work. He hopes to have it done in time to bring it with him to Chryslers at Carlisle next week so that I can pick it up there. Carlisle is much closer to me than George's place. While at George's, he showed me around and also gave me a ride in his '49 Plymouth so I could see how the overdrive should work. I want mine now more than ever. Had a great visit and it was good to meet this very nice man in person. Jim Yergin Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 When the time comes, I'll come out to Warrenton and you can show me how your overdrive works. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Always fun to visit with George Asche. Here is a view from the back seat of his 49 Plymouth. George is driving and that is Richie Hodge riding shotgun. George told me this engine has over 250,000 miles on it although it has been rebuilt many times. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Looks like he's got gauges from a '50 in the dash. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Looks like he's got gauges from a '50 in the dash. Joe; I think you are correct. I believe it is a 50. I dont have a front shot but these back shots do not show rippled bumpers. I do like the "overdrive" logo. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 Yeah, the overdrive script is very cool. I always thought it was interesting how they went to that Old West lettering on the gauges in 1950. I'd like to get myself a set of those stone guards for the rear fenders. I notice that some 49s had them and some didn't. I wonder if that was an optional feature. The dealers probably claimed you could pick up more dames with stone guards on your car. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 1, 2011 Report Posted July 1, 2011 The dealers probably claimed you could pick up more dames with stone guards on your car. So Joe; Do we now know your objective;) And what exactly is a dame? Interpations are welcomed! Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 Dames, Don, are broads. At least they were in the late 40s. I don't care about attracting any, though. I've reached the age where I get more excited about the stone guards. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 Stone guards won't run off and take half of your stuff either. Quote

He is a nice guy and very knowledgeable about Mopars. If your ride with him was anything like Don and mine you were in for a treat. If I remember correctly he ran it up to about 50 mph in first gear overdrive, this is on wet roads. I don't remember what the top speed was as I was watching the road very closely. George drives like a 16 year old kid, and drives like he stole it. We picked up 3 overdrive trans and I wired mine the way George wired his. I need to get back up there and visit with him again. Greenbomb Posted July 3, 2011 Report Posted July 3, 2011 You can hope all you want, but your day is coming!! Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 4, 2011 Author Report Posted July 4, 2011 (edited) George called me this morning. My overdrive is ready. Found enough wrong with it that I sure am glad I took it to him. Those who can, do, those, like me who can't, need to hire those who can. I will pick it up on Saturday. Really looking forward to getting it back in the car. P-12 Tommy Posted July 5, 2011 Report Posted July 5, 2011 I'm crossin' my fingers for ya Jim! Good luck! Tom Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 5, 2011 Report Posted July 5, 2011 So, did he tell ya what was wrong with it? Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 5, 2011 Author Report Posted July 5, 2011 Yes. He didn't say it but the problem was that I tried to fix it myself. C clips were loose or missing and whole assemblies were moving back and forth causing problems. I was hoping that perseverance would overcome my lack of mechanical ability but even I eventually know when to stop beating my head against a wall. If nothing else I have become very good at installing and removing the transmission and I have an understanding of what is inside and how it all works. Jim Yergin Quote
