Jerry Roberts Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 My transmission to bell housing bolts are 7 /16 too . Around here I can't find 7/16 at the hardware stores but some of the auto parts stores have them . I did find 7/16 threaded rod at the hardware store though . Just put some oil on the correct bolt and see how they go in . Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 3, 2011 Author Report Posted July 3, 2011 Tapped out the stripped holes and installed 7/16 bolts. Everything held and the transmission is now securely attached to the bell housing. Then I set the freeplay on my clutch pedal and made sure the overcenter spring was adjusted correctly. Next I went to install the control rods for the gearshift and soon found myself in an alternate universe. WTF? Nothing matches up. I switched the levers that were on the overdrive with the levers that were on my original 3-speed. It looks like one rod will work but the other is a complete mystery. I have a bunch of old threads on this subject bookmarked, along with a lot of good photos posted by various forum members. Time to go study them. Going out of town for two weeks tomorrow and will be undergoing withdrawal. Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted July 4, 2011 Author Report Posted July 4, 2011 I'm going cold turkey. No Mopar. Two weeks. I can do it. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 16, 2011 Author Report Posted July 16, 2011 Back under the car after some time away. I'be been trying to hook up the gear shift linkage and I'm having difficulty figuring out exactly how it all goes together. As far as I know, the piece pictured below is installed correctly but I can't get the arms to attach to it and to their respective points on the transmission/shifter at the same time. In fact, they're so far off, I have to think that something is either bent or I have installed this piece incorrectly: Here is a picture of the connection at the gear selector on the transmission. Just wanted to know if all looks good: The connection at the shifter. I can connect it here but there is no way it will connect to the fork shown in the first picture: The rod that operates the selector comes very close to the brake pedal. I'm wondering if it is either installed wrong or maybe bent: And finally, does anyone know if the rod that goes from the shift column to the fork shown in the first picture is positioned like this? Should it go on the other side of the clutch linkage? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 17, 2011 Author Report Posted July 17, 2011 I found an old photograph I took before I disassembled everything and that answered at least part of my question. I have the gear control rods hooked up correctly. Now I just have to figure out the selector rod that is running too close to the brake pedal. Quote

That could be why it's close to the brake pedal. Bob Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted July 17, 2011 Author Report Posted July 17, 2011 Thanks, DJ, that is exactly how I wound up assembling mine. It works pretty well right now except that it hangs up a little in first and reverse. I have excess movement at one of the connections and will be fixing that soon. I'm missing a washer at that point. On another note, I got a visit from Rodney Bullock today, who showed up in his 1940 Plymouth. I started the car with the transmission in neutral and ran the engine for the first time in a few weeks. He helped me figure out the shift linkage. We also messed around with getting the headlights wired and lit. Turns out my dimmer switch is trash. I depressed it once and it won't come back up. Also, the headlight feels way hotter than I think it should. Will be revisiting that soon. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Joe a brand new dimmer switch can be had from napa. Depending on your wiring it may require you to combine 2 wires into 1 bullet as it only has 3 connections and some of the OEM ones had 4. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 17, 2011 Author Report Posted July 17, 2011 Ed, This one has four. It's probably the original. I'll check NAPA. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Glad to hear Rodney is alive and well. I don't think he has been on the forum lately. Did he mention why he wasn't at Sully? Jim Yergin Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Hi all, I have had a bad time with my hip lately. I broke down and had a proceedure that had me in more pain then before. Jim, I was so ready to be at Sully this year but the pain at that time was unbearable. I could not walk the grounds and see all those wonderful cars. When I heard that Joe and his wife were there it made me sick. I had been trying to get Them there since I met them. I am so glad that they were able to enjoy that show and meet up with you. I am also glad to hear that the OD is finally working for you. I have not been on the forum because just sitting sometimes gives me great discomfort. After the proceedure I was able to drive the old Plymouth. I really feel bad about my car. It is not driven much because it's maual shift. I was so happy to see all the progress that Joe has made I was very impressed with his knowlege and methods he has become a real gear head. He will be riding very soon. I look in from time to time and see all you guy's doing so many interesting things, it's a blast. Everybody keep up the good work, I will be back out there soon enough....until then:cool: roll it like you stole it! Quote
Andydodge Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Good to hear from you Rodney..........all you guys feel like family to me.........its SO nice to be able to talk Mopar with others.........lol.................best wishes for your recovery Rodney........andyd Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 18, 2011 Author Report Posted July 18, 2011 It was very good to see Rodney. He pulled up in that champagne colored coupe. Since I was in the middle of adjusting my shift linkage, I was able to check his out and see how smoothly it operates. Before you know it, we'll be taking road trips. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Rodney, it's good to hear from you again, I've missed your great photos. I'm sorry to hear about your hip, though. Hang in, it will get better. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 Joe,I am the one who suggested you count the teeth so blame it on me. I have a 19 tooth gear on my car with a 4.3 rear end. Still reads too fast but I do not think a 20 tooth gear is available. Jim Yergin Just to update this post, George Asche supplied me with a 20 tooth speedometer gear drive. My speedometer is now much more accurate. Jim Yergin Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 3, 2011 Author Report Posted August 3, 2011 And to update the post further, I filled my transmission with the George Asche-recommended 15W40 motor oil for diesel engines. No leaking, I'm happy to report, but will see what happens when the thing is actually functioning. I've been busy lately chasing that noise in the engine so haven't done any OD-related work. Next step is wiring and lockout cable, though. Quote
fedoragent Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Has anyone put together a definitive parts guide and where to get these parts somewhere on the board? FG. Quote
steveplym Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 The only places I know of right now are Northwest transmission parts and fifth avenue garage. George Asche as well. http://www.nwtparts.com/ http://fifthaveinternetgarage.com/ Quote
