Young Ed Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Do the pilot house trucks use bolts like these? At just under $100 bucks for a set I'm looking for alternatives. I did find these at mcmaster but the head is almost .25 smaller. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 These are the bolts used to secure the rear fenders to the bed. I got mine from Bruce Horkey when I ordered his bed kit> Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Try " elevator bolt" in your mcmaster. I bought some with the square neck with the intention of using them for mounting the fenders. Head measures 1.2" dia, 5/16 coarse and come in varying lengths. No slot or Philips in the head to use for tightening, just the short square shank on the thread end and the back side alsois raised slightly towards the center so to get them flush on the edges would concave the fender hole a wee bit. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 22, 2011 Author Report Posted March 22, 2011 How do you get them tight with a smooth head? Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) The square shank just under the head is supposed to keep them from rotating. Would work best with square holes. A zip gun would get them tight the first time. My bigger concern was removing them. Maybe some of the glues used for panel replacement on vehicles would hold them. I suppose some careful work with a cutoff wheel could put a slot in them for a screwdriver blade. I could go try that and see how it works. Be right back. Yup, that'll work. I heard Kath has these...haven't looked as of yet. Neither have I checked w/ Fastenal. If Fastenal carries these I can get them at a HUGE discount and would just pass them on at cost.... Quote

I got it yesterday too thats what prompted the research. Seems unbelievable that the fender bolts cost as much as the 5 polished stainless steel bed strips. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 not a stocked Fastenal part, but my contact is checking to see availability and I might be able to get some at a better price and pass them along. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 22, 2011 Author Report Posted March 22, 2011 Awesome. Mark do you have your old ones handy? I'd like to know what size the thread is on the original ones. I have 0 original ones handy. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Fastenal cannot supply them. I can dig the one or two out that I didn't have to cut off for measurment over lunch. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 22, 2011 Author Report Posted March 22, 2011 I just found these. They just have a smooth head but they might be close. http://macsautoparts.com/early-ford-pickup-fender-to-bed-bolt-special-large-flat-head-a65022/camid/FP1/cp/JS0R3CHL1093531E/ Quote
ggdad1951 Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 thread is 5/16 fine thread head diameter of 1" from base of head to end of thread is .875" Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 If originality isn't all that important why not use Mar-K's other style. They are much cheaper. A set like this would be $40 for the zinc plated ones. Quote

Jim Gaspard Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Horkey's has them also, but they may bust your budget as well. http://www.horkeyswoodandparts.com/page37.html#fbolt REAR FENDER BOLTS (individual) '39-'85 Zinc-plated Steel Dodge $5.30 ea 2 oz '39-'85 Custom Stainless Dodge $3.00 ea 2 oz '39-'85 Custom Polished Stainless Dodge $5.10 ea 2 oz Quote
Bob_Koch Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 My idea was to use elevator bolts also. But how to keep them from turning when putting on the nut? I made some metal strips out of sheet metal about 1 X 2 inch. drilled a hole in the center the size of the threaded shank, slightly smaller than the square part of the shank. Put your metal, washer and nut on the inside of the fender. As you draw tight the nut, the square part of the shank is forced through the sheet metal and kept from turning by the metal piece as it bumps against the inside of the fender. You may need a few large washers to adjust for the depth of the square part of the shank. Quote
rustyzman Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 As an alternative to elevator bolts, look for "sidewalk bolts" instead. They have the wide flange head with a slot in it, quite similar to the first posted picture. I hope to use them for my stake bed when the time comes in the stainless variety. In stainless they are much cheaper than their elevator bolt equivalent. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 24, 2011 Author Report Posted March 24, 2011 The sidewalk bolt is what I posted in my original question. I didn't know thats what they were called but it turns out I found them already. They only have a .755 head when the OEM ones are a full inch. Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 Still going to cost you $40 to get as many as you need. You'll be wanting the 5/16 x 1 size if you go that route. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted March 25, 2011 Report Posted March 25, 2011 Stopped at Kath and they don't have them Quote
John-T-53 Posted March 25, 2011 Report Posted March 25, 2011 Interesting to note the stainless bolts are cheaper than the regular steel. For those of you who've done your beds, do these original bolts usually come off intact? I have to fix up my bed someday soon, and I have all the original bolts in place still. They've never been touched. Horkey's has them also, but they may bust your budget as well.http://www.horkeyswoodandparts.com/page37.html#fbolt REAR FENDER BOLTS (individual) '39-'85 Zinc-plated Steel Dodge $5.30 ea 2 oz '39-'85 Custom Stainless Dodge $3.00 ea 2 oz '39-'85 Custom Polished Stainless Dodge $5.10 ea 2 oz Quote
