Don Coatney Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Couple of questions. Is the rubber hose used for the connector on your gas tank fill tube rated for gasolene? If not it should be. Secondly is your mantel clock a "JEROME"? And if so is it a wood works? Quote
Al B. Bach Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I'm curious where you found the reproduction fuel sending unit? And also, do you know if Mopar changed it much through 53? The sending unit on my 53 Windsor is bad and the price to get it rebuilt or find a NOS one is crazy. I know my car still has the 17 gallon tank and I wonder what the chances are that they didn't change them. Keep the videos coming! Carl Quote
aero3113 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 It's funny you ask,I did a little searching on the net before and found these guys. http://atwaterkentmfg.com/Fuel%20Senders.htm Quote

I know they started using a two wire system in 1936 and kept it into the early 1950s, but I don't know when they went to the 1950s one wire system. If you have a one-wire system you can modify a relatively inexpensive modern "universal" sender to work. See: http://www.ply33.com/Repair/fuelsender.html If you have the two wire system, your options are more limited. It's funny you ask,I did a little searching on the net before and found these guys.http://atwaterkentmfg.com/Fuel%20Senders.htm At least for the early 1930s Plymouth senders, the ones from Atwater Kent have shellac coated cork floats. I have doubts about how that will stand up to gasoline with ethanol in it. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I believe at least plymouth went to a 1 wire in 49. Quote
Al B. Bach Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I honestly don't know if I have one wire or two. I just got off the phone with Atwater Kent and it looks like it will be around $125 plus shipping. A lot better than the last place I talked to that said it would be around $300 to rebuild mine! Would it be possible to change the cork out for something that would last better? Quote
plymouthasc Posted March 29, 2011 Author Report Posted March 29, 2011 Thanks for mentioning to check the fuel tank hose rating. Those are the kind of things you don't know you don't know. I was told when I bought it, it was rated for fuel. I hope it is! The clock was my grandmother's. It is a Seth Thomas. I don't know the year. It was converted to an 8 day spring clock at some point. A few years ago, I reverted it back to a one day weight clock.... and now I know why it was originally made into an 8 day clock. 24 hours is not very long between winding! Quote

I notice that Roberts Motor Parts has both the one wire and two wire gauge listed in his catalog for $85. I don't know who makes it. I did not get mine from him, but as I said, I don't remember where I did get it. Quote
Mustang6147 Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 WOW! I like that guage cluster..... good luck on your deadline. Nice car! Quote

My Jerome woodworks one day weight clock was my grandfathers born 1865 died 1925. I also do not know the year of the clock. My grandfather made a new pendulem swing arm from a bicycle spoke. I have not ran my clock in years but it ran well last time. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 I posted video #4 about restoring the '41 coupe. I talk about the fuel tank restoration and show the "unboxing" of an NOS rear view mirror I purchased for the project.See the video at http://www.youtube.com/user/ihazwings Thanks for the comments and feedback. It has really helped with the restoraton. Mark Mark, That friend who sent you that NOS mirror wouldn't happen to be Lindsay McConnell? We've been E-mailing back and forth for almost 4 years. I've bought some parts from him here and there.Tom Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 Our grandparents were born about the same time. My Grandmother was born in 1878 and died in 1977. My grandfather was born in 1872 and died in 1947. The clock still works when I remember to wind it. The gong had a rather annoying sound however. Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 Yes it was Lindsay. I have known him for many years. He does a nice job with his parts. Not the volume of a big dealer, but definitely has things that are hard to find. Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 Thanks! It has been a lot of fun. Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 In case you have not subscribed to the YouTube channel and want to know when I post a new video... there is a new one today. I give an update and describe the parts lists and service manuals that have helped with my restoration. Video: Photo: Got some parts in the mail this week. Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 11, 2011 Author Report Posted April 11, 2011 I posted a new video on YouTube in which I discuss tail lamp lens restoration, using patents for research, vacuum wiper motor rebuild service and removing & replacing the trunk deck lid springs on a coupe. I continue to appreciate the support and interest of all in this project. I have gotten some great leads on restoration information and the chance to meet several people online. Quote
plymouthasc Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 I have posted video #7 in the series. I haven't gotten the bolts back from the plater so I can't continue with assembly right now. They are supposed to be ready today. If so, there will be a lot of progress this week. In the meantime, I toured the Metal Rubber plant and found several new rubber reproduction parts I had never seen before. Quote
RobertKB Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Very interesting. Thanks for posting. There is a lot to learn from each video. I am looking forward to the reassembly process. This is always more fun than the disassembly of the dirty parts! Quote
Andydodge Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 Mark, enjoyed the latest video, went & checked the Metal Rubber website but could not find any reference to Plymouth parts or list of parts like you show on the video....any chance on getting a copy of that 2 page list?......or show me where its listed on their website.........lol...thanks, andyd.
