Posted (edited)

Hi All, tonight, Wednesday, January 26, 2011, is the debut broadcast of Discovery Channel's "Desert Car Kings"; an old car related ""REALITY"" show, filmed in THE GREAT STATE OF ARIZONA. We, in the Arizona Collector Car Community are very excited for this program to highlight the old car hobby in our state.

PS: For the wrecked PLYWOOD, I got my LF fender trim SS piece from Desert Valley Auto Parts, which is owned by the McClure family, the main characters in Desert Car Kings.

I owned a nice T Bird for awhile and I know what to look for and they never address the rocker area's-notorious for rust out problems!! I wouldn't give ten cents for that car let alone 10,000 dollars. I'm going to contact them and see if they have any trim for my Dodge. Probably not as what I have is supper rare. Anyway typical of these programs with a time frame that would be impossible to meet if the car was done to right but two weeks no way!!!!!!! Or they would haft to work 24 hours a day to get up to pare. Oh well nice try and I think these programs would do better if they really stuck to a program in which there was no time frame for sake of a race to get it done. Jon

Whats with the jewelry? Dam lets stick to the cars! I can find that junk at our local junk yard an pocket in my coat. Nice set up for the jewelery but usually all you find is some old oil cans and few rusty wrenches if lucky. Now if you want to find junk in cars go to an impound auction and that's where you find the real junk!!!!!

Yes, there is a quick flash of a tan P15, on the show, and this link is that car. I had already bought my LF fender trim piece off of another P15 fender, in their yard, before this car arrived. The rest of the parts, to restore PLYWOOD, we got off of a complete parts car, that Art Butler bought; including the nice read fender gravel guards you see on PLYWOOD, now.

Watching it now, in the beginning they show the yard and you get a quick look at what looks to be a Mopar flathead 6 :D

It was very nice to see some members of the AZ Thunderbird Club, on the show; as they usually show up to support a lot of the car event fund raisers in the Valley. It is always fun to go to the two DVAP yards to look at the museum of American auto history, as they get different cars delivered, every week. Some of the desert scape back roads, they showed, are the same roads many of our local runs use; great for photo ops. Even though it was a TV Reality Show, it was nice to see the old cars and the "hood" on the tube.

Jon,

Is the T-Bird in the picture from an eBay listing? My friend bought one just like it from eBay about 6 months ago with the same colors.

They were fortunate in that the 'Bird evidently had practically no rust.

And they had the parts needed real handy.

If they had had to cut out and replace floors and rockers, I doubt they

would have made the two week deadline.

Or, they could take lessons from the OverHauling show......I saw a bit

of it afterward. They totally dismantled the fellow's Pontiac, did a

complete rejuvenation with upgrades.....and did it in one week.

And, at the auction the fellow called it an "all original car".

It was done back to original appearance, but was not in possession

of all it's factory parts and paint.

while I usualy enjoy discovery Channel and it off shoot's programing, I am begining to see some thing that indicate that the reality is less than real. Watched a couple of episodes of American Pickers where they unearthed some really unusual items, only to have them show up on Pawn Kings a couple week later.

Used to watch junk yard wars, until it became obvious that necessary items for the builds that were assigned, had been seeded in the yard. Chain saw engines, aged with flat black paint patina, and motor cycle and jet skis under stacked stuff.

Is junkyard wars still on?

I used to watch it occasionally.

They did make some pretty strange vehicles that

actually ran....mostly.

reality is less than real.

I have never seen a "reality" show that was anything near real life. Hard to believe the average American public actually believes what they see on TV. Remember these shows are engineered to make money for the producers. How long would a show last where someone found something like a bent up P-15 hubcap that was worth nothing?

It sure is good to see that TV land can't fool you guys. Just remember, it is a "reality" show; not a "realistic" show. I was hoping some of you nay sayers would appreciate the nice views of our desert geography, see some of our local car guys and their cars and not get out your "nit picking" bifocals.

Didn't even see the show that you mentioned, just pointing out the descernable faux pas the is typical of the genre. Nor did I mention your recommended program. I did lok to see if it was on the On Demand listing of our cable provider but not so.

Glad you enjoyed it, and hope others did as well. My comments were not addressed at that program but to what seems to be happening to the discovery Chanel and it's progress toward cmmercial viable rather than actual documentary style presentations.

I will say the scenery was good.

They could have taken some more shots throughout the

junkyard to show more of what cars they have. Did see

the one P15.

The fellow in the T Bird club was good to take the man for a

ride in his car.

I decided that show "jumped the shark" about 5 minutes into it. Too bad, we could use a good car show.

Well, I can't quite comment yet on this offering, 'cause I fell asleep and only caught the scene where they opened the trunk of some car (like it was Capone's vault or something).

But I must admit that lately I just about avoid most auto-oriented programming. It's all about the editing (for dramatic effect) on all of these faux-reality shows. American Hot Rod (Boyd Coddington's show), Overhaulin', that other one with the cranky guy (something White) who rebuilt and sold musclecars - all those fake deadlines, all the extra drama, to the point of disbelief.

Speed Channel seems to be mostly NASCAR (not my cup of tea). Pinks is edited for drama. Car Crazy isn't so bad, once you get past the Meguire guy's perpetual goofy grin. My Classic Car is OK, you get to see some nice rides, but Dennis Gage gets on my nerves; must be the mustache.

Spike TVs car shows - fuggetaboudit. They're more about the hosts than the cars. Plus, they appear to be aimed at a demographic that I no longer participate in.

The only one IMHO that is still watchable is Chop Cut Rebuild. No drama, in fact some may call it boring, but you get to look at cool cars being built and driven, and, for the most part, the participants seem to all know what they are doing.

Sorry for the rant; as my nephew would say, I'm just turning into a GOG (grouchy old guy)!

I gotta agree with you about Chop Cut Rebuild. It seems to be the only show where there's actual work being done without the drama. I will admit to liking My Classic Car though.

I know you guys actually like that show on MTV about West Coast Customs. What a bunch of poo poo that show is, i would not let that butcher anywhere near one of my cars.

Charlie, It was good to see the yard but the scenery is just like here!

Yes they were sure lucky to find that jewelery:rolleyes: all I ever find is an old roach clip or something like that. I do go to car actions and sometimes people just walk away from there cars and you can really tell that by the junk left behind. Now go to an impound auction different story! some cars there are real deals as the owners got picked up for a DWI and his car got towed away to the impound lot. And at these actions you can't hear the car start up but you can usually tell that the rig was running up to the time the poor bastard got thrown in jail and his car impounded. Look at the back window and usually there is some type of code showing it was a DWI car. Jon
