Coffin04 Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 EVER! So why is it i'm getting coolant pooling around my #1 Spark plug. I'm thinking it's the one of the seals from the cylinder Head Water Inlet. Though this isn't a constantly occuring thing. It's got to be in that special mood to just let it loose all over that #1 plug. Going to find some gaskets and see if that does it but before i do i wanted to know if any of you have had this problem. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Mine does that too. Its the thermostat housing and bolts. I call it part of its character. Quote
greg g Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Check the hoses clams and gaskets, probably a slow leak right in the near neighborhood. Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 I take that answer as. "i tried a lot of things and couldn't stop it form coming in so now it has a place at the table with the rest of the family." Is that about right? Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 lol, alright well i'll let you know if i have a similar result. I just hope mine doesn't have family from elsewhere. Quote
greg g Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 lots of times it could be some metal errosion in the thermostat outlet casting, or the sheet metal of the internal bypass type. this keept the rad hose from sealing nomatter how ticht the clamp is. Some attention to the pitting with JB weld or something similar will restore a smooth and sealable finish. Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 You know... this is one of those times you wish you could set up a little camera so you can catch the leak in the act, and go AH HA!! it was Colonel Mustard in the Library with the Candle Stick! Quote
ptwothree Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 My '51 has a seam running the length of the hood that leaks water onto the plugs when it's raining...just sumpin else to fix! Quote
LAKOTA169 Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Like this? I had that problem last year. Sometimes coolant would be around 2 ot 3 spark plugs. Would tighten and re-tighten the hose clamps and thermostst housing bolts. Even replaced the housing and bypass gaskets. Would still leak. Finally, I replaced the housing bolts and that seems to have fixed the problem. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Mine did the exact same thing for a while, and I was just as stumped. After a while the coolant discolored the paint on the engine so I could track it down to the thermostat housing. I ended up truing-up the base of the housing (light filing), using slightly thicker gasket material, and sealing the bolts that hold the gasket on. No more problems (with that anyway) for 15 or so years now. Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 I have a request . . . cause i'm sure at some point many common things like this have been covered in posts before that get lost in the many many back logged and sooner or later erased threads. Can common issues like this, with known causes, and possible solutions be put into a sticky thread? That way they are readily available right off the bat, yes? Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 that would be nice, but if you did things like that, we would have all of them as sticky threads! seriously though, you couldnt really do anything with it unless you divided it into categories such as "engine" and "body", etc. im sure GTK could go further into it Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 I guess your right, but it would be nice to have a forum of threads with this stuff in it, kind of like an online P15-D24 Online odd ball help manual. Add things as they come up. ANYWAY, thanks for the help gents. Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 you are basically suggesting a "troubleshooting" manual? that just may be do able in PDF format... Quote

Can common issues like this, with known causes, and possible solutions be put into a sticky thread? That way they are readily available right off the bat, yes? Have you gone to the main web page supporting this forum and read all the information there? If not I suggest you do so as most common issues are discussed in deail there. Have you used the search function to look for threads using key words relevant to the questions you have? I dont believe any threads on this forum have been erased unless they are off color or flaming wars. Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 20, 2011 Author Report Posted January 20, 2011 It's not cover there, i checked all through it. Would be a nice addition though. Quote

What brand of paint did you use and how long ago was it applied? Thanks, Frank Quote

The block is painted black. Quote
Roadkingcoupe Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) My '51 has a seam running the length of the hood that leaks water onto the plugs when it's raining...just sumpin else to fix! There is an accessory kit called an "Ever-Dry Kit" that was available for earlier cars with "butterfly" style opening hoods. The kit includes aluminum "cups" and rubber upper boots. They snap together and protect the spark plugs from water that leaked through the hood hinge. Just a thought. pm me if you need more info. Edited January 21, 2011 by Roadkingcoupe Quote
