I watch the entire clip and it was odd that there were no trucks on the road but you still had horse drwan wagon and carts. I would like to know if the camera was on a trolley car because everyone was very interested inthe vehicle that was filming the trip.

I would suppose that most of the cars would have been model t's and did you notice that none o fthe cars were not smoking out the exhust system. Very odd that people that were driving would cut right in fron of the trolley's and you had to have eyes all around your head. I like how the you gentleman were trying to push or hitch a ride on the one car.

Love the dress of the people notice that even people that were driving the buggies even wore top hats and coats.

Great piece of history and very interesting to watch enjoyed it greatly.

That film clip is taken on Market Street starting somewhere around OFarrell Street and ending near the clock tower for the ferry terminal. That is the exact route I used traveling from the Hotel where I stayed to the FRB when I worked in SanFrancisco a couple years back. The electric trollies that I rode to work may very well be the same trollies seen in this video.

That film was done just a couple of weeks before the 1906 earthquake. Somewhere there is a film showing the same street after the earthquake. The two have been shown on television to compare the destruction.

I worked on Market Street back in the mid to late 60's on the corner of 2nd and Market street fairly close to the Ferry Building. No top hats or horses but lots of bell bottoms, taxis and busses. Very noisy and sooty. This film must have been shot just before the big earthquake of 06 and sometime before the Hobart building I worked in was constructed. Neat !

I did get to ride out an earthquake on the 8th floor of the Hobart building while watching other wide eyed people in the windows of neighboring buildings sway back and forth. Not so fun.

...snip... I would suppose that most of the cars would have been model t's ...snip...

The Model T Ford was introduced in 1909 (I think the first ones might have been built in 1908). So none of the cars in a 1906 film could have been Model Ts.

That clip has been floating about the web for a while now. And, as mentioned in other posts, shown on TV.

The car that the camera was on is a cable car. But I don't think there have been cable cars on Market since the earthquake. At least one of the crossing trolley cars is electric, but I don't think it could have been one you rode on. I think all the old SF street cars were cycled out in favor of the 1930s PCC cars over the years. The antique trolleys that are there now for the tourists are from other street car systems around the world and are painted in the livery of the system they came from.

O FILME MAIS ANTIGO DO MUNDO

Filmado 4 dias antes do grande terremoto de 1906

Vale a pena ver.

THE WORLD'S OLDEST FILM

Filmed four days before the great earthquake of 1906

Worth seeing. Here the value of a cultural heritage. It is a time warp!

Four days after many of these people were dead and ruined city.

(We lost too much time on nonsense. At any time in nature can "delete")

For movie buffs, tracking what may prove to be the oldest movie ever made (1906)!

These scenes are filmed from a cable car (tram) on Market Street in San Francisco, California, USA.

It's amazing the amount of cars that already existed at that time.

And how many follies were committed, under the noses of police

(Probably, there was no traffic laws ...)!!

The traffic was chaotic with the living, not so smooth, between

pedestrians, bicycles, carriages, automobiles, streetcars, etc..

Notice that the streetcars crossing the street already have electric traction!

On the street, there is a building that is there today, because it is

the passenger terminal of the San Francisco Bay.

The film, after much debate, was traced and

the date of its production: It is a film produced on April 14, 1906, four days before the big quake

which ended with the city of San Francisco. The film was shipped to New York on a train,

to be processed, there have been spared this tragedy.: eek:
